First identify which phase timed out: browser navigation to the URL, or BackstopJS waiting for the page’s configured readiness condition. Use readySelector or readyEvent for content that renders after navigation; increase readyTimeout only when that valid condition genuinely needs more time. A navigation timeout calls for checking reachability and the browser engine’s navigation settings instead.
Identify which timeout occurred
Read the exact error and determine whether BackstopJS failed while navigating to the URL or while waiting for a readiness check. These are different stages, so a longer readiness timeout will not necessarily fix a navigation timeout.
- Navigation timeout: the browser did not finish the configured navigation operation. Investigate URL access, redirects, authentication, browser errors, and engine navigation options.
- Readiness timeout: navigation progressed, but the configured
readySelectororreadyEventdid not satisfy BackstopJS withinreadyTimeout.
BackstopJS documents readiness settings and engine options in its project documentation. The installed BackstopJS and browser-engine versions matter; check the versions locked by your project before applying version-sensitive settings.
Fix a post-navigation readiness timeout
Use a selector for a rendered state
Choose an element that appears only after the specific content needed in the screenshot has rendered. Confirm it exists in the rendered DOM and that it uniquely represents the desired state. For example:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
{
"readySelector": "#results-loaded",
"readyTimeout": 60000
}
readyTimeout is the bound for readySelector and readyEvent. The BackstopJS package documentation lists a default of 30000ms; verify the applicable behavior for your installed version in the npm package documentation. The 60000ms value above is an example, not a universal recommendation. Increase the bound only if the selector is correct and the page can legitimately take longer to reach it. If the selector never appears, a larger timeout only delays the same failure.
Use an application event for app-controlled readiness
When the application can signal completion more reliably than a DOM selector, configure readyEvent and have the app emit that console string only after the data and UI dependencies needed by the screenshot are ready:
{
"readyEvent": "backstopjs_ready",
"delay": 500
}
The application is responsible for waiting for relevant dependencies before emitting the event. If both are configured, delay runs after the ready event. Use it as a short settling buffer for a known animation or similar post-render effect, not as a substitute for identifying readiness when load times vary.

Fix a navigation timeout
Check that the BackstopJS process can reach the URL from its actual machine or container. Review redirects and authentication requirements, then inspect browser console and network failures. If those checks do not explain the timeout, review the navigation settings for the selected browser engine.

Isolate the failure and check the runtime
Run only the failing scenario
Use --filter=<scenarioLabelRegex> to narrow the run to a scenario label. This reduces noise while preserving the scenario that fails:
backstop test --filter='Checkout page'
Replace the example label with a regular expression matching your scenario label.

Check concurrency and environment-specific behavior
BackstopJS performs captures and image comparisons concurrently. If simultaneous captures appear to overwhelm the environment, reduce asyncCaptureLimit. This controls concurrency; it does not extend a timeout or tell BackstopJS that a page is ready.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
If the failure occurs only in Docker or CI, compare URL reachability and browser launch behavior in that environment with a local run. The project README notes that, in the described Docker setups, scenario URLs using localhost are not reachable from the container; it gives host.docker.internal as an alternative for Mac and Windows. That hostname is not a universal fix for every container platform.

If you need a clean website capture rather than a BackstopJS visual-regression test, ScreenshotNeo returns a screenshot or PDF from one GET request. Its API accepts a URL and can return PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. A simple cURL example is:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. Cookie banners and consent prompts, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before capture; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers indicate the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is BackstopJS’s documented default ready timeout?
The BackstopJS npm package documentation lists 30000ms for the readiness timeout; confirm the setting for your installed version.
Does reducing asyncCaptureLimit increase the timeout?
No. It reduces capture concurrency and may help with resource pressure, but it does not change page readiness or timeout bounds.
