1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsBackstopJS is the better fit when you want to run and manage screenshot comparisons in your own project; Percy is the better fit when you want hosted rendering and a web-based snapshot review and approval workflow. Neither is a universal winner. Choose based on who should operate the rendering, which browsers and operating systems you need to cover, how reviewers approve changes, and how much test infrastructure your team wants to maintain.
How BackstopJS and Percy differ
BackstopJS: project-managed screenshot comparisons
BackstopJS compares new screenshots against reference images. Its documented workflow is to configure scenarios and viewports with backstop init, capture and compare with backstop test, then promote reviewed captures to the reference set with backstop approve. Your team owns the configuration and reference-image workflow.
The project documents browser and command-line reports, JUnit output for CI, Puppeteer and Playwright engine options, and optional Docker rendering to help reduce differences between execution environments. Its README also says the project “needs a new maintainer/owner.” That is a project-status signal to weigh in your maintenance assessment, not proof that the software is unusable or abandoned. Check current releases and issue activity before adopting it.

Percy: hosted snapshot comparison and review
Percy turns a visual test run into a build containing snapshots. It processes and compares those snapshots with a baseline, then presents changes for review and approval. For Percy browser rendering, BrowserStack manages the rendering infrastructure and offers selected browser options.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That hosted workflow shifts rendering and review operations away from a locally managed screenshot setup. Percy also documents branch and build approval behavior, source-control connections, and plan-dependent build-history retention.

Choose by workflow, browser coverage, and ownership
| Decision | BackstopJS | Percy |
|---|---|---|
| Who operates rendering? | Run it in your project; Docker rendering is an option. | Upload snapshot assets for hosted processing and comparison; Percy manages its browser-rendering infrastructure. |
| How are baselines updated? | Review captures, then run backstop approve to promote them to references. |
Review and approve changes through Percy’s hosted build and snapshot workflow. |
| Browser engines and control | Documents Puppeteer and Playwright options, including Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit configuration. | Percy’s managed browser selection supports cross-browser review. BrowserStack says to configure Automate for specific OS/browser combinations. |
| CI reporting and review | Documents JUnit CI reports and browser and CLI reports. | Visual test runs create builds for review; check the integration and blocking behavior for your repository and plan. |
| Infrastructure responsibility | Your team maintains configuration, reference images, and the execution environment. | Hosted processing reduces the need to operate Percy’s rendering infrastructure; the team still needs to configure tests and review changes. |
Rendering fidelity matters as much as browser names
Cross-browser coverage is not the only source of visual differences. Operating-system rendering can change fonts, form controls, and scrollbars, so the same browser family on different systems may produce different images. Use Percy’s managed browser option when its available selections meet your needs; if you need specific desktop, mobile, and browser combinations, BrowserStack recommends configuring Automate. BackstopJS documents engine options for Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit, but your actual coverage depends on the configuration and environment you operate.

BrowserStack recommends full-page screenshots for broader page coverage and the Recommended match level by default. Those are vendor recommendations, not independent benchmark findings. See BrowserStack’s Percy visual-testing guidance.
Usage accounting and history can affect the choice
BrowserStack says each selected browser rendering counts as a separate screenshot toward Percy’s monthly usage. Its visual-testing overview says free-plan builds expire after 30 days and other plans include one year of history. These are plan conditions, not general product guarantees; verify current plan terms before estimating usage or relying on retained builds. See BrowserStack’s visual-testing overview.

A practical decision framework
- Choose BackstopJS if you want to keep screenshot capture and reference handling within your project workflow, need its documented CLI/JUnit reporting, and are prepared to own configuration and execution infrastructure. Include the maintainer notice in your risk review.
- Choose Percy if hosted snapshot processing, selected managed-browser rendering, and a centralized review-and-approval workflow better fit your team. Check the current browser choices, plan limits, source-control integration, and history terms against your actual requirements.
- Run a small evaluation before standardizing. Use representative pages with dynamic content, typography, controls, and long-page layouts. Confirm that the capture environment matches the intended coverage, that reviewers can distinguish expected changes from regressions, and that approvals update the baseline in the way your release process expects.
Where ScreenshotNeo fits
BackstopJS and Percy are visual-regression workflows: they compare captures with baselines and support review of visual changes. ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers, so it is an alternative to try first when your immediate need is capturing pages—not a substitute for a baseline-comparison and approval system. It can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF from a URL, and supports 63 options including full-page capture, element screenshots, device presets, custom CSS and JavaScript, and async jobs.
Its clean-shot workflow can accept cookie and consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Responses identify page verdict and billing status. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
