What the MIT license permits
The BackstopJS repository’s LICENSE file grants permission to use, copy, modify, merge, publish, distribute, sublicense, and sell the software. Commercial use is therefore allowed; you do not need to buy a commercial license for the software covered by that MIT license.
BackstopJS is visual regression testing software for web applications. Its documented workflow creates reference screenshots, captures screenshots for later tests, compares them, and presents visual differences for review. The project documents npm installation, browser-rendering options, and CI workflows in its project materials.
What you must retain—and what the license does not promise
- Keep the notices: Include the copyright and permission notices in copies or substantial portions of the software.
- No warranty: The MIT License supplies BackstopJS “AS IS” and disclaims warranties, including merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement.
- Limited liability: The license limits liability. Read the full license text for its precise terms.
Check the release and its dependencies
The repository’s license answers the question for software covered by that license; it does not automatically establish the terms for every dependency or separately distributed component. GitHub’s guidance on licensing a repository notes that repository license detection does not account for dependency licenses.

Before distributing a particular application or bundle, inspect the LICENSE file for the exact BackstopJS release you use, then review licenses and required notices for its dependencies and any separately bundled components. The project homepage and npm package listing also identify BackstopJS as MIT-licensed, but the release-specific license file is the one to check for your chosen version: BackstopJS and the npm package listing.
