BackstopJS already runs screenshot captures and image comparisons in parallel during a test. To tune that work, set the root-level asyncCaptureLimit and asyncCompareLimit values in your configuration, then adjust them to suit the memory available on the machine running the tests. The project README lists defaults of 10 concurrent captures and 50 concurrent comparisons, but check the README or configuration for your installed release before relying on those defaults.

How BackstopJS parallelizes a test

BackstopJS has two distinct parallel stages: capturing screenshots and comparing the resulting images. The project README says both stages run in parallel and exposes a separate concurrency limit for each. Raising one limit does not change the other.

  • asyncCaptureLimit controls the number of concurrent screenshot captures.
  • asyncCompareLimit controls the number of concurrent image comparisons.

The README lists defaults of 10 captures and 50 comparisons. Those figures are from the mutable project README, which does not identify a specific release date; check the documentation or configuration for your installed version. BackstopJS project README.

Set parallelism in your configuration

Use the root-level settings in the configuration file used by your test. For example, this JSON sets lower limits than the README’s stated defaults:

{
  "asyncCaptureLimit": 5,
  "asyncCompareLimit": 20
}

The example values are illustrative, not universal recommendations. Lower limits reduce simultaneous work and can help with memory pressure; higher limits may improve throughput when the runner has capacity.

Choose the configuration file

BackstopJS can use the default backstop.json or another configuration supplied with --config=<path>. The README also supports JavaScript configuration files. Put the settings in the configuration your invocation actually loads, and consult the installed release’s documentation for the expected format. BackstopJS project README.

Tune speed without exhausting memory

There is no single safe limit for every project: memory use depends on the screenshots, browser-process overhead, runner capacity and the work being performed. BackstopJS warns that higher concurrency raises RAM use. Increase limits gradually and observe the actual CI runner or machine rather than treating the README’s estimate as a guarantee.

The README gives a very approximate comparison-memory rule of thumb: 100 MB baseline plus about 5 MB per concurrent comparison. This is the project’s estimate, not an independently verified benchmark or a promise about a particular workload. BackstopJS project README.

  1. Record the current limits and run time for a representative test suite.
  2. Change one limit at a time so you can see whether capture or comparison is the bottleneck.
  3. Run the same workload on the same runner and watch memory as well as elapsed time.
  4. If the runner becomes memory-constrained or unstable, reduce the limit you raised and rerun.

Do not assume more concurrency always means a faster or more reliable run. The useful setting is the one your workload and runner can sustain.

After editing the configuration, invoke BackstopJS with the same config file. A local installation can run from its project binary:

./node_modules/.bin/backstop test --config=backstop.json

Replace backstop.json with your chosen path. The README also describes running through npm scripts or the Node API, which can fit an existing build process. Exact integration code depends on your project setup; see the BackstopJS project README.

When debugging a specific scenario, the documented --filter option can run a matching subset by scenario name. It is useful for focused troubleshooting, but it is not a mechanism for splitting a full configuration across independent workers.

Parallel runs in CI: reports and exit status

BackstopJS documents CI reporting that generates JUnit output and a CLI exit status of 0 for success or 1 if anything fails. Use the report for CI test-result visibility and the exit status to gate the pipeline step. Consult the installed version’s README for the exact CI-report configuration. BackstopJS project README.

Separate CI jobs are an orchestration choice

The documented built-in controls are the capture and comparison limits inside a BackstopJS run. The project README does not establish built-in sharding semantics for distributing one configuration among independent CI workers. If you split work into jobs, treat that as your own orchestration design—for example, using separate configurations or filters—and verify that each job produces the reports and results your pipeline expects.

Use Docker when rendering consistency matters

BackstopJS notes that text can render differently across environments and documents running tests with backstop test --docker. A consistent container environment can help reduce differences between machines, but it does not remove the need to tune concurrency for the resources available to the container or runner. BackstopJS project README.

The published Docker Hub image documents mounting the working directory at /src and lists backstop openReport as unsupported in that image. Check the image listing before depending on that command inside the container. BackstopJS image on Docker Hub.

Troubleshooting parallel BackstopJS runs

Symptom Likely cause What to check or do
Changing a concurrency value has no effect The test may be loading another configuration file, or the installed release may differ from the README guidance. Confirm the command’s --config path and check the configuration behavior for your installed BackstopJS release.
The run becomes unstable or the runner runs short of memory Too much simultaneous capture or comparison work for that workload and host. Lower the relevant limit, then rerun while observing runner memory. Capture and compare limits control separate stages.
Only one scenario needs investigation Running the entire suite obscures the focused failure. Use the documented --filter option to match the scenario name.
Text differs between local and CI results Rendering can differ across environments. Consider the documented Docker test mode and keep the execution environment consistent; check the image’s openReport limitation if using its container.
The CI pipeline does not show a useful test result CI reporting may not be enabled or the job may not use BackstopJS’s exit status. Enable the documented JUnit CI report and let the pipeline respond to the CLI result: 0 for success, 1 for failure.
Independent CI jobs do not cover the suite as expected Job distribution is external orchestration, not a documented native sharding feature. Verify each job’s configuration or filter and how reports and failures are collected.

Or skip the browser setup

If you need screenshots through an API rather than running BackstopJS in your own browser setup, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. One GET request can return an image or PDF; its documented options include full-page capture, viewport and device settings, and waiting for a selector, delay or network idle. The response identifies page verdict and billing status.

For example, save a screenshot of a target URL using cURL:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Replace the example URL with the page you want to capture. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for authentication and options. Cookie banners, newsletter popups and chat widgets are removed before capture; bot checks, blank pages and failed loads are not billed. Its MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for ScreenshotNeo free.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does BackstopJS run captures and comparisons in parallel by default?

Yes. The project README says both stages run in parallel; their concurrency is controlled separately.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does increasing `asyncCompareLimit` also increase screenshot captures?

No. `asyncCompareLimit` controls image comparisons; `asyncCaptureLimit` controls screenshot captures.

Can I split one BackstopJS configuration across CI workers with a built-in sharding option?

The project README does not document native sharding semantics. Distributing work across jobs is an orchestration choice that needs to be configured and verified separately.
