To make BackstopJS screenshots render text consistently, capture both reference and test images with the same pinned rendering environment—ideally the same BackstopJS Docker image and browser—and ensure the page’s intended fonts are installed and loaded before capture. Docker reduces environment differences; it cannot supply a font that is missing from the container or guarantee identical rendering in every situation.
Why BackstopJS screenshots render fonts differently
Text can vary between screenshots when reference and test runs use different operating systems, browsers, fonts, or capture settings. The BackstopJS project specifically notes that environments can render the same page differently, particularly text, and recommends using its Docker mode to reduce those differences: BackstopJS Docker guidance.
A common cause is font fallback: the page requests a font that is available on one machine but absent in the other environment. Even when the same webfont is intended, a capture made before it has loaded may show fallback text. Differences in browser/runtime, viewport, device scale, URL state, or scenario setup can also complicate pixel comparisons.
First fix: run reference and test in the same Docker environment
BackstopJS documents Docker mode as a way to make captures more consistent across environments. Run both the reference and test captures through the same pinned BackstopJS container and browser version, rather than generating references natively and comparing them with screenshots from a different CI image.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
backstop test --docker
BackstopJS also documents a configurable dockerCommandTemplate for adapting how its Docker command is run. Its example mounts the project working directory at /src. Follow the documentation for the version installed in your project; host-specific details can matter, including host.docker.internal in some Mac and Windows setups and --no-sandbox in certain older configurations.
Keep the container image and browser version pinned and verify them in your own setup. A Docker Hub listing describes a self-contained BackstopJS 3.x image with Headless Chrome, but that listing is old and should not be treated as a recommendation to use an unpinned latest tag or as evidence of the current BackstopJS release: BackstopJS Docker Hub listing.

Check whether the intended font is actually available and loaded
- Inspect the page in the test environment. Use the browser’s developer tools to check the computed
font-familyand whether the expected webfont loaded successfully. A declared CSS family does not prove that the browser rendered with that font. - Compare font identity before pixels. If the test environment falls back to another font, fix font availability or loading before changing image-diff settings.
- Provide missing fonts to the renderer. If a required font is absent from the container, install or copy an appropriately licensed font into the image, then rebuild it. A historical BackstopJS issue reports this as a workaround for a local-versus-Docker font mismatch, but the exact install steps depend on the font and base image: BackstopJS font mismatch issue.
- Wait for the intended page state. Ensure the page and its fonts have finished loading before capture. The sources do not establish one universal, version-independent BackstopJS font-readiness setting, so check the engine and version documentation before adopting a particular wait hook.
Standardize everything that affects capture
Once fonts are present, align the rest of the rendering setup between reference and test runs:
- Use the same BackstopJS, container, and browser/runtime versions.
- Use the same viewport dimensions and device scale configuration. Check the installed version’s engine options rather than assuming a particular scale-factor flag works across releases.
- Use the same URL, authentication, data, and other page state.
- Keep scenario setup and capture timing consistent. BackstopJS uses scenarios to define captures; consult its documentation for the version in use: BackstopJS scenarios.
Browser console logs do not appear in screenshots, so confirm the rendered result itself instead of relying on logs alone.

Choose Docker or native runs based on your team’s needs
| Approach | What it helps standardize | What you still need to check | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shared Docker image for reference and test | Provides a common containerized rendering environment and makes versions easier to pin. | The required fonts must still exist in the container and load before capture. | Docker can reduce cross-machine variation, but container setup and host integration may take work. |
| Native runs on local and CI machines | Can work when machines use matching operating systems, browsers, and fonts. | Keep those components and capture settings aligned on every machine. | Local and CI parity may be harder to maintain across different hosts. |
The BackstopJS project favors Docker for cross-environment consistency, but it does not establish that Docker is always simpler or the best fit for every team. A historical issue also discusses macOS/Linux rendering variation; treat issue reports as examples, not guarantees about current releases: BackstopJS macOS/Linux rendering issue.
Adjust image comparison only after fixing rendering
BackstopJS comparison settings affect whether a screenshot passes or how differences are interpreted; they do not install a font or make separate rendering environments choose and rasterize text identically. The project README describes misMatchThreshold as a percentage of mismatch tolerated and requireSameDimensions as a setting for accepting dimension changes. The retrieved documentation gives a default mismatch threshold of 0.1, but defaults can change; check the README matching your installed package before relying on that value: BackstopJS configuration documentation.

Raise tolerance or use relevant Resemble.js options only when the residual variation is understood and acceptable. Otherwise, a looser threshold can hide a real font-loading or layout regression.

| Symptom | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Text differs only in Docker or CI | The container may lack the font or use a different rendering stack. | Check computed font and font load status in that environment; add the licensed font to the image if needed, then rebuild. |
| Reference and test differ despite using Docker | They may not use the same image/browser version, font set, viewport, scale, page state, or capture timing. | Compare those settings directly and run both captures in the same pinned image. |
| Only some captures show fallback typography | The capture may occur before the webfont is ready, or the font request may fail intermittently. | Verify font loading and network access in the test environment; use a version-supported wait strategy. |
| Diff passes after increasing the threshold, but text still looks wrong | The threshold changes pass/fail sensitivity, not font selection or rasterization. | Restore an appropriate threshold and fix the font or environment mismatch first. |
| Docker command fails on a host platform | Docker host networking or sandbox settings may differ by platform and BackstopJS version. | Check the installed-version Docker guidance for applicable host settings such as host.docker.internal or --no-sandbox. |
