Set BackstopJS’s report option to ["browser"], then run backstop test in your CI job. That creates the browser-readable visual report. If your pipeline also needs a machine-readable test result, add "CI" to the report list: BackstopJS documents that CI output as JUnit, not HTML.
Configure BackstopJS to generate the HTML report
Add the browser reporter to the BackstopJS configuration used by your CI job. For example, in backstop.json:
{
"report": ["browser"],
"paths": {
"html_report": "backstop_data/html_report"
}
}
The html_report path is relative to the job’s current working directory. BackstopJS’s README uses backstop_data/html_report as a sample location and allows the path to be changed in configuration. Use a path inside the workspace that your CI provider can collect as an artifact.
Run the test command in CI
Run the configured BackstopJS test command from the project directory:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
backstop test
The browser report is generated after the test run. Configure your CI provider’s artifact or publication step to collect the directory set in paths.html_report; BackstopJS does not prescribe one universal artifact-retention recipe across CI platforms.
Choose between the browser report and the CI report
BackstopJS uses the report property to select report types. The browser reporter produces the visual report intended for browser review. The separate CI reporter produces a CI-integrated report whose documented default format is JUnit.

| Setting | Purpose and output |
|---|---|
"report": ["browser"] |
Creates a browser-readable visual report. |
"report": ["CI"] |
Creates the CI report; the documented default format is JUnit, not HTML. |
"report": ["browser", "CI"] |
Enables both outputs for visual review and machine-readable CI integration. |
If you need both, configure both report types and set their output paths and CI format explicitly:
{
"report": ["browser", "CI"],
"paths": {
"html_report": "backstop_data/html_report",
"ci_report": "backstop_data/ci_report"
},
"ci": {
"format": "junit",
"testReportFileName": "myproject-xunit",
"testSuiteName": "backstopJS"
}
}
The documented default CI report file is [backstopjs dir]/test/ci_report/xunit.xml. Use paths.ci_report to change its directory. The ci.format, ci.testReportFileName, and ci.testSuiteName options control the report format, filename, and suite name. Keep the HTML report directory and CI report directory as separate artifacts if your pipeline needs both.

Reopen or inspect the latest report
To reopen the latest test run’s report, run:
backstop openReport
This command can reopen the latest report even if the test run used only CI reporting or no browser reporting. For report features such as approving scenarios or viewing scenario browser logs, the BackstopJS README says to start its remote HTTP service in another terminal before opening the report:
BACKSTOP_REMOTE_HTTP_PORT=3000 backstop remote --config=<your config>
Then run backstop openReport.
Make CI fail when visual tests fail
BackstopJS documents that the CLI exits with status 0 when tests succeed and 1 when anything fails. Let the CI job use that process result to determine whether the test step passes; artifact collection is a separate concern, so configure it to retain the report when the test step fails if your provider supports that behavior.

Troubleshooting report generation
- The pipeline has JUnit but no HTML report: Check whether the configuration says
"report": ["CI"]. Add"browser"to generate the browser-readable report. - The report is generated but not available after the job: Check the
paths.html_reportvalue and the CI job’s current working directory, then configure the artifact step to collect that directory. - The CI system does not show test results: Confirm that
"CI"is included inreport, and check the configuredci.format, report filename, andpaths.ci_reportlocation. The documented default CI format is JUnit. backstop openReportdoes not show the report you expect: It opens the latest test run’s report. Confirm the command is run in the project/configuration context for that run.- You cannot approve scenarios or view scenario browser logs: Start the remote HTTP service in another terminal with
BACKSTOP_REMOTE_HTTP_PORT=3000 backstop remote --config=<your config>, then open the report. - The job stops before artifacts are retained: BackstopJS returns a nonzero exit code when a test fails. Configure artifact collection to run after failures if you need the visual report for debugging.
Or skip the browser setup
BackstopJS is the right choice when you need visual regression reports tied to its test workflow. If your separate task is to capture website screenshots through an API, ScreenshotNeo returns an image or PDF from one GET request. For example, this cURL request saves a WebP screenshot:
