YouTube allows up to 10 active streams per channel and up to 3 active streams per stream key. Both limits apply at the same time, so adding another software or hardware encoder does not increase either allowance. Before starting another broadcast, check the active-stream count for the channel and for the key you plan to use.
How many active streams can you broadcast on YouTube?
YouTube Help states a limit of 10 active streams per channel and 3 active streams per stream key. These are concurrent limits, not separate allowances you can add together: a channel must stay within both caps. The figures are YouTube’s published product limits, as of October 3, 2026; they are not results from an independent test. YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming.
- Channel-wide cap: No more than 10 active streams on the channel.
- Per-key cap: No more than 3 active streams using the same stream key.
For example, a channel could be below 10 active streams overall and still be unable to start another stream with a key already being used by 3 active streams. Likewise, changing keys does not create more channel capacity once the channel-wide cap is reached.
Do multiple encoders give you a higher limit?
No. An encoder—software or standalone hardware—sends a video feed to a YouTube live event using the event’s server URL and stream key. The limits YouTube publishes are based on the channel and stream key, not on how many encoder devices you own or run. A second encoder can provide another production source, but it does not raise either cap. YouTube Help: Set up your encoder for live streaming.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Use multiple encoders when your production needs separate feeds or sources. If your goal is to broadcast more simultaneous events, first plan around the channel-wide and per-key limits; buying or starting another encoder will not bypass them.
How to check and start another stream
- Count active broadcasts on the channel. Confirm that starting the planned stream will not exceed YouTube’s 10-active-stream channel limit.
- Check the stream key you intend to use. Confirm that no more than 3 active streams will use that key.
- Set up the event in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Copy the event’s server URL and stream key into the encoder. YouTube’s setup instructions cover encoder configuration at Set up your encoder for live streaming.
- Wait for the preview. Verify that the feed appears correctly in Live Control Room before taking the event live.
- Monitor the broadcast. YouTube recommends setting up in advance, checking the preview, monitoring stream quality, and testing failover where applicable. See YouTube Help: Live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
Stream keys, dual-format delivery, and counting
Reusing or replacing a stream key
YouTube supports reusing stream settings, creating custom stream keys, and resetting a key. If you reset a key, update the encoder with the replacement key before trying to send the feed; the old key will no longer be the one to use. See YouTube Help: Create and manage live stream keys.

Horizontal and vertical versions of an event
YouTube documents a workflow for delivering horizontal and vertical formats together from Live Control Room. For third-party encoder delivery of both formats, YouTube says to use RTMP(S) and a second stream key for the vertical stream. This is a separate configuration workflow, not a stated exemption from the active-stream limits. YouTube’s published guidance does not specify precisely how every dual-format configuration is tallied internally, so do not assume it provides extra quota. Details: YouTube Help: Stream in both horizontal and vertical formats.
Troubleshooting: a stream will not start
- The channel has reached its active-stream cap. Count active streams across the channel. Another encoder or another key will not raise the channel-wide maximum.
- The chosen key is already at its cap. Check whether 3 active streams are using that key. If appropriate, use a different configured key, while still staying within the channel-wide limit.
- The encoder does not connect. Recheck the server URL and stream key copied from the event, then wait for the Live Control Room preview. If you reset the key, replace the old key in the encoder.
- A horizontal-and-vertical setup behaves differently than expected. Confirm the documented RTMP(S) and second-key configuration. YouTube’s guidance does not establish a more specific quota-counting rule for every such setup.
When a start fails, check both the channel count and the count for the specific key before attributing the problem to encoder hardware.

When hardware or cloud tools make sense
A standalone hardware encoder can suit a multi-source or higher-production workflow; YouTube recommends professional-grade hardware for higher-production events. Choose based on required outputs, protocol support, production needs, and integration with the existing setup—not as a way to exceed YouTube’s caps. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance covers the encoder connection.
If the separate need is distributing one feed to multiple platforms, YouTube describes local software or hardware encoding and cloud relay services as broad options. A cloud relay sends one high-quality feed to a service that distributes it to multiple destinations; YouTube notes this can suit simpler setups or streaming to more than two channels. That addresses distribution, not YouTube’s own per-channel or per-key limits. YouTube Help: Stream to multiple platforms.

Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded videos running as a 24/7 YouTube stream rather than operate another encoder at home, StreamNeo runs the loop from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot; StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
