There is no single monthly price for running YouTube streaming traffic through an Azure VM in India: estimate the VM’s compute, storage and other selected resources separately from internet egress, then add applicable taxes and billing adjustments. Your bandwidth estimate depends mainly on total viewer-hours and the average playback bitrate you assume—not simply on the VM’s own upload setting.
What goes into an Azure streaming estimate?
Use this structure:
Monthly estimate = VM compute + disks/storage + any separately priced IP or related resources + internet egress charge + applicable taxes/contractual adjustments.
A VM’s hourly compute price is only one component. Microsoft says standard egress charges apply to VM pricing; outbound data sent from the VM to viewers on the internet is generally the relevant egress in this scenario. If your design uses Azure CDN, Front Door, peering or other products, check those products’ billing rules rather than applying the VM internet-egress schedule automatically. How much does an Azure VM cost per month in India?
The answer depends on the exact region, VM size, operating system, powered-on hours, storage and purchase terms. Azure identifies Central India, South India and West India as Zone 2 for billing geography. That classification does not mean every Azure network charge uses the same zone grouping: the internet-egress schedule groups India under Asia, while transfers between Azure regions have separate charges. Estimate compute with the selected configuration
For a continuously billed Linux VM, estimate compute as the selected Linux SKU’s hourly price multiplied by its powered-on hours. For Windows, choose the appropriate Windows pricing treatment and include any license component. Do not treat 730 hours as a universal month: it is a standard planning convention. For an actual bill, use the hours in that month or state explicitly that you are assuming a 24/7, 730-hour planning month.
Azure’s calculator takes product configuration—including region, size and OS—and usage quantities as inputs. Enter the actual design rather than relying on an isolated VM price. Microsoft cautions that displayed prices are estimates and actual prices can vary by agreement, date, currency and purchase conditions. Start with the Azure pricing calculator guide; for a specific India VM monthly figure, validate the selected configuration in the calculator or Microsoft’s Retail Prices API and against the subscription’s billing terms.
How much bandwidth does YouTube streaming use?
Estimate outbound data from the average delivered playback bitrate and total viewer-hours. A useful decimal-unit conversion is:

Data in decimal GB ≈ average Mbps × viewer-hours × 0.45
The factor comes from converting megabits per second into decimal gigabytes over an hour; it is arithmetic, not a claim that YouTube playback always uses a particular bitrate.
Build low, base and high playback scenarios
For example, if you assume an average delivered rate of 8 Mbps, 100 viewer-hours would amount to about 360 decimal GB (8 × 100 × 0.45). This is scenario arithmetic, not a measurement of YouTube playback. Use more than one bitrate assumption if you do not have telemetry: playback adapts to network conditions and selected quality, so a single figure can mislead.

YouTube’s published bitrate table is for upload encoding recommendations, not measured viewer consumption. As context only, YouTube recommends 8 Mbps for SDR 1080p uploads at standard frame rates and 12 Mbps at high frame rates; its 4K upload recommendations are 35–45 Mbps and 53–68 Mbps, respectively. Do not substitute these upload recommendations for observed playback bitrate. See YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings.
Apply Azure’s India-relevant internet egress tiers
Azure’s published internet-egress schedule gives the first 100 GB per month free in every region. For an Asia source such as India, the next 10 TB is listed at $0.12/GB with Microsoft Premium Global Network routing or $0.11/GB with Routing preference transit ISP routing. These are published USD prices, not a guaranteed invoice quote. Check the live pricing page and your subscription’s billing terms before turning them into a rupee estimate.
For a modest monthly total below the next tier boundary, subtract the 100 GB allowance and apply the applicable listed rate only to the remaining billable data. Above that boundary, calculate progressively using the published tiers rather than multiplying all data by the next-tier rate.

Make the estimate auditable
- Specify the VM: record the Azure India region, SKU, OS and expected powered-on hours. State whether a 24/7 estimate uses 730 planning hours or actual calendar-month hours.
- Estimate viewing data: choose an average delivered playback bitrate for each scenario and multiply it by monthly viewer-hours and 0.45 to get decimal GB.
- Choose the network route: use the matching Azure egress schedule and apply its free allowance and progressive tiers to the estimated outbound data.
- Add the rest of the bill: include disks/storage and any separately priced IP or related resources, then account for taxes, negotiated discounts and agreement-specific terms.
- Validate current pricing: enter the configuration and usage quantities in the Azure calculator and review the applicable subscription terms. Microsoft says: “Prices are estimates only and are not intended as actual price quotes.”
For a meaningful comparison between two designs, keep the assumptions matched: region, OS, SKU, runtime, viewer-hours, bitrate scenarios, network routing and included resources. The Azure calculator’s displayed estimate can change with date, agreement and currency.
