If your YouTube live stream buffers or drops frames because the encoder is sending more data than your connection can reliably upload, lower the total stream bitrate until it fits within stable upload capacity—with headroom. YouTube recommends leaving 20% of available upload bandwidth unused. If the bitrate still will not support your chosen picture, reduce resolution or frame rate, then test a representative stream and watch YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health.

Why upload bandwidth causes buffering and dropped frames

Your encoder sends the live video upstream, so upload capacity—not download speed—is the relevant limit. A fast download test does not show that your connection can sustain the stream’s outgoing data. YouTube says the total stream bitrate cannot exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% room. That is YouTube guidance, not a guarantee that a connection advertised at a particular speed will deliver that speed continuously to the stream.

Available capacity can also change while you are live. Other people and devices using the same connection may consume upload bandwidth, and a connectivity disruption can interrupt delivery. The bitrate shown in the encoder must therefore be sustainable under realistic conditions, not merely below a one-time speed-test result. YouTube’s streaming tips explain the bandwidth guidance.

Choose a bitrate your connection can sustain

Measure upload capacity under realistic conditions

  1. Run an internet speed test that reports upload speed. Do not rely on download speed alone.
  2. Repeat the test when practical, including during the household or workplace network load expected during the stream. Results vary, and shared traffic can leave less capacity for the encoder.
  3. Use the stable upload capacity available to the stream as your limit, then reserve YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. If the configured total stream bitrate is above that budget, reduce it.

For example, if a connection appears to provide 10 Mbps of stable upload capacity, YouTube’s 20% headroom guidance leaves about 8 Mbps for the stream. Treat this as an illustration of the calculation, not a promise that a speed test will reflect sustained capacity.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Use YouTube’s live-ingestion bitrate recommendations

After determining the sustainable bitrate, choose a resolution and frame rate that fit it. YouTube’s current encoder-setting recommendations for live ingestion are listed below; they are not guarantees of connection stability. These are live-stream figures, not the separate bitrate table for uploading prerecorded videos.

Resolution and frame rate H.264 recommendation AV1 or H.265 recommendation
1080p60 17 Mbps 12 Mbps
1080p30 14 Mbps 10 Mbps
720p60 8 Mbps 6 Mbps
720p30 8 Mbps 6 Mbps

If your available upload budget with headroom is below the recommendation for your current configuration, lower the bitrate and, if needed, lower resolution or frame rate. Choose the highest-quality combination that remains sustainable rather than selecting resolution on its own. Check YouTube’s current live encoder settings before an event because platform recommendations can change.

Check encoder settings and test before going live

Use the recommended delivery settings

  • Bitrate encoding: YouTube recommends CBR (constant bitrate).
  • Protocol: YouTube recommends RTMP/RTMPS.
  • Keyframes: Set the keyframe interval to two seconds; YouTube says not to exceed four seconds. Keyframes sent too infrequently can cause buffering even when upload capacity is sufficient.

Use YouTube’s guidance for the selected ingestion codec, resolution, and frame rate rather than relying on a bitrate table intended for video uploads. See Manage live stream settings for the encoder recommendations.

Run a representative test stream

  1. Before the event, test with audio and movement similar to what you will actually stream. Static screens or a brief idle test may not reveal problems that appear during a high-motion segment.
  2. Check the stream health indicator in YouTube Live Control Room while the test is running.
  3. During the real stream, keep an eye on stream health and read any timestamped error messages. They can help distinguish a bitrate or connection issue from a keyframe or other configuration problem. YouTube describes its error indicators in live stream troubleshooting guidance.

If you use OBS, interpret dropped frames carefully

OBS’s network-dropped-frame counter points to a connection that is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. First check whether the outgoing bitrate exceeds the sustainable upload budget, then check whether other network traffic or a connection disruption is affecting the stream. OBS’s official Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide, dated September 30, 2024, explains these symptoms.

OBS dynamic bitrate can lower bitrate during congestion and may reduce dropped frames, but it reduces video quality and does not fix the underlying connection problem. Use it as a fallback when you cannot resolve the connection issue, not as a substitute for choosing a sustainable bitrate or fixing an unstable network.

Troubleshoot by symptom

Symptom Likely issue What to do
OBS reports network-dropped frames The connection is unstable, or the configured bitrate is too high for it. Compare the outgoing bitrate with stable upload capacity after leaving headroom. Reduce bitrate if needed; test under realistic network load and investigate connection stability if the bitrate is already sustainable.
Buffering or stream-health warnings appear during busy network periods Other users or devices may be consuming upload capacity. Repeat upload tests under realistic shared-network load, reduce the stream bitrate, and limit competing upload traffic during the event where practical.
The selected resolution cannot be sustained at an appropriate bitrate The available upload budget is insufficient for that picture configuration. Lower resolution or frame rate, then select a bitrate appropriate to the codec and configuration from YouTube’s current live recommendations.
YouTube reports a keyframe problem The encoder may be sending keyframes too infrequently. Set a two-second keyframe interval and do not exceed YouTube’s four-second maximum.
Playback buffers despite adequate encoder upload Playback latency settings can affect viewer buffering, separately from upload capacity. Review YouTube’s latency guidance. YouTube notes that lower latency may mean more playback buffering; changing latency does not add upload bandwidth.

For latency behavior, see YouTube’s live stream settings guidance. A network device or software issue may matter if testing points to local instability, but changing hardware cannot increase the upstream capacity provided by your internet service. If stable upload capacity itself is inadequate, ask your ISP whether an upstream-capable plan or line issue is available.
