Start with OBS’s Stats window: rising Dropped Frames (Network) points to a connection or ingest-path problem; Rendering Lag or Encoding Lag points to system performance. Fix the branch that matches the counter instead of lowering every setting at once. Viewer buffering is a separate problem and can happen even when your stream is healthy at the source.

Diagnose the problem in OBS before changing settings

Open View > Stats in OBS while streaming or running a representative test. Watch which counter rises. OBS defines network-dropped frames as frames discarded because the connection to the remote server is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate; too many can disconnect the stream. OBS says this is typically not a problem inside OBS itself. See the OBS Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide.

  • Dropped Frames (Network): follow the network checks below. Lowering resolution alone will not repair a bad route or unstable Wi-Fi, though a lower bitrate may reduce the load on a constrained connection.
  • Rendering Lag: OBS is struggling to compose and render the scene, often because the GPU is busy.
  • Encoding Lag: the encoder or system cannot process frames fast enough at the selected output settings.
  • No OBS counters rising, but viewers report buffering: investigate viewer playback and accessibility separately; not every viewer has the same device, connection, or route.

Make one change at a time, then repeat the same test. That makes it easier to tell whether the change addressed the bottleneck or merely altered the picture.

How do I fix dropped frames in OBS?

When the network-dropped-frame counter climbs, compare the stream’s configured bitrate with both your stable upload capacity and the destination platform’s limits. A speed-test result is not a guarantee that the connection can hold that rate continuously. OBS suggests 75% of total upload speed as a starting point, not a promise of stability. Its connection guide also recommends checking the route and local network.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  1. Reduce the bitrate if it is too close to your reliable upload capacity. Keep within the platform’s current ingest recommendations. Test at the reduced rate under realistic conditions before using it live.
  2. Try another ingest server. A different destination server can help when a particular route is unreliable. For Twitch on Windows, OBS points to TwitchTest as a way to identify a server with a better quality score.
  3. Test another streaming service as a diagnostic. If the issue occurs only with one service, that suggests a service-specific route problem; this test identifies a possibility but does not fix it.
  4. If you are on Wi-Fi, test with wired Ethernet. OBS recommends a wired connection because Wi-Fi can be unstable for streaming. Use equipment you already have if possible; Ethernet cannot resolve every ISP, router, or upstream routing issue.
  5. Check software that may interfere with networking. Temporarily test without VPN software or bundled network optimization features. OBS names Lenovo Vantage Network Boost and Killer NIC software as examples. Restore appropriate security protection after testing.
  6. Update network drivers and restart network equipment. Check the computer or motherboard manufacturer for current drivers. Restart the modem and router if there may be a connectivity issue.
  7. Contact your ISP if the problem persists. Congestion or a route issue outside your home network may require the provider’s help.

OBS’s dynamic bitrate option can lower the bitrate when the connection cannot keep up. Treat it as a fallback: it may reduce visible quality, and it does not fix the underlying connection problem.

What does “encoding overloaded” mean?

It means OBS or the system is not keeping up with the work needed to produce the stream. Rendering and encoding are distinct from network delivery: changing the network bitrate may not resolve a GPU bottleneck. OBS’s Encoding Performance Troubleshooting guide recommends reducing competing GPU work and, if necessary, reducing the output workload.

Free GPU capacity first

  • Close or reduce other GPU-heavy applications.
  • If you are streaming a game, cap its frame rate to your monitor’s refresh rate or enable V-Sync; lowering game graphics settings can also help.
  • On Windows, try running OBS as administrator. OBS says this may reserve GPU capacity for OBS in many cases.

Reduce what OBS must render or encode

  • Lower the output resolution or frame rate; if 60 fps is not working, test 30 fps.
  • Simplify scenes and limit expensive browser or video sources. Try smaller source dimensions and temporarily disable costly filters or overlays to find out whether one is contributing.
  • Lowering the base canvas resolution is a larger change: sources and scene layout may need adjustment, so inspect the result across scenes.

A hardware encoder or a more powerful computer is not a guaranteed cure. The bottleneck can be GPU rendering, the encoder, competing system work, or more than one of these; reduce the work and verify which OBS counter improves.

What bitrate should I use for streaming?

There is no universal bitrate. Choose one that your connection can sustain, the platform accepts, your encoder and computer can handle, and viewers can play. Higher resolution and frame rate can require more bitrate and system resources; lowering them trades visual detail or smoothness for reliability and broader accessibility. The following values are YouTube’s displayed H.264 ingestion recommendations on its encoder-settings help page; they are not universal Twitch settings or guarantees of a successful stream.

These are YouTube recommendations from its Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions page; the retrieved page did not display a publication date. Check it again before a broadcast because platform guidance can change. The page lists CBR, a two-second keyframe interval (not exceeding four seconds), and H.264, H.265, and AV1 ingestion options subject to its stated constraints. For Twitch or another destination, verify that platform’s current encoder requirements rather than copying YouTube’s table.

Why is my stream buffering for viewers?

Viewer buffering does not necessarily mean you are dropping frames. OBS notes that viewers use different devices, connections, and locations, so a stream can be clean at the broadcaster’s end but difficult to play for some people. If the stream health and OBS counters look sound while viewers still report interruptions, consider whether your bitrate, resolution, or frame rate is too demanding for part of the audience. Lower settings may help, particularly where transcoding is unavailable, but reduce detail or motion smoothness. See OBS’s Stream Buffering Troubleshooting guide.

Run a pre-live test that resembles the real broadcast

Before an important stream, test the actual combination you plan to use—not just a blank scene or a short upload-speed check. YouTube advises testing upload bitrate, using representative audio and movement, and monitoring stream health during the event.

  1. Confirm the destination platform’s current encoder and bitrate requirements.
  2. Use the real scene, audio sources, overlays, and typical on-screen motion.
  3. Run a test at the intended resolution, frame rate, encoder, and bitrate long enough to reveal unstable counters.
  4. Check OBS Stats for network-dropped frames, rendering lag, and encoding lag, and check the platform’s stream-health indicator.
  5. If a counter rises, change the setting or condition tied to that branch, then repeat the test before going live.

Twitch’s broadcasting-guidelines search summary also emphasizes stability over pushing quality settings that risk dropped frames, and identifies network, excessive bitrate, and router problems as possible causes. Its detailed settings should be checked directly in current Twitch guidance before use.
