That distinction matters: dropped frames usually point to the streamer’s connection to the ingest server, while viewer buffering can happen even when the stream reaches the platform cleanly.
Find which part of the stream is failing
Check the stream in this order before changing settings or buying equipment:
- Game and sources: Look at the encoder preview and, if available, a local recording. If the problem appears there, investigate the game capture, scenes, audio routing, camera or microphone—not the viewer’s internet connection.
- Encoder: Check CPU or other encoder workload and whether the local recording has the same defect. A poor local output points toward source configuration or encoding rather than platform playback.
- Network and platform ingest: Review encoder statistics and the platform’s stream-health messages. If the encoder preview and local recording look healthy but the platform stream does not, test the outbound connection and verify the platform’s format requirements.
- Viewer playback: If only viewers report buffering or poor playback, ask whether it affects everyone or particular devices and locations. Their connection, device capability, and the platform’s available transcoding can matter even when your encoder reports no dropped frames.
Why is my stream dropping frames?
In OBS, dropped frames indicate that the connection to the remote server is unstable or cannot keep up with the bitrate you selected. Check OBS statistics and logs while streaming, then compare the configured bitrate with your reliable upload capacity—not your download speed.
YouTube says the total stream bitrate must not exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% headroom. Count other traffic on the connection too: other people or devices sharing the network can reduce the capacity available to your stream. The 20% recommendation is YouTube guidance, not a universal requirement for every platform.

- Pause large uploads, downloads, backups, and other network-heavy activity; retest when the connection is less busy.
- If Wi-Fi instability is suspected, test over Ethernet if your computer and router support it. A cable is a diagnostic option, not a guaranteed fix; check connector, category, and length compatibility before buying one.
- Check whether a VPN, security product, or network-prioritization software is affecting the outbound stream. Temporarily changing one factor at a time makes the result easier to interpret.
- On Windows, OBS documents network optimizations and TCP pacing as possible troubleshooting measures. Dynamic bitrate can mitigate congestion by lowering bitrate, but may reduce image quality and does not repair the underlying connection.
If the connection cannot reliably sustain the chosen bitrate, lower it. If that is not enough, reduce resolution or frame rate while staying within the platform’s recommendations and your encoder’s capacity.
Why does my stream keep disconnecting?
Disconnections can arise from an unstable route to the ingest server, an overloaded or interrupted network, or a configuration problem. Use the platform’s live dashboard and encoder logs to tell them apart rather than assuming that a faster internet plan will solve every case.

- Check the platform’s stream-health or error message at the time of the disconnect. Correct any reported format or ingest issue.
- Inspect OBS statistics and logs for dropped frames or connection failures. Test the outbound connection and repeat without a VPN or network-management software if either may be interfering.
- If using a third-party encoder with YouTube and it fails to start, YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance recommends obtaining a new stream key and updating the encoder. Keep the key private: do not show it in screenshots, recordings, or public logs.
- Change one setting at a time and run a short test stream before returning to a long broadcast.
Why is my stream lagging or buffering for viewers?
First distinguish network loss at the streamer’s end from playback trouble at the viewer’s end. If your encoder reports no dropped frames and the platform shows a healthy ingest, ask affected viewers to try another device or network. A stream can arrive at YouTube without dropped frames while some viewers still buffer because their connections, devices, or locations differ.
You can test a lower bitrate or resolution to make playback easier for more viewers, but that trades image detail for reach. Platform transcoding can also affect which playback qualities viewers can select; do not treat a clean encoder statistic as proof that every viewer’s playback path is clear.

Latency is another trade-off. YouTube notes that lower latency may mean more playback buffering. Choose a lower-latency setting when interaction with viewers is important; a stream with little or no real-time interaction may be better served by a setting that prioritizes steadier playback.
Why does my stream look or sound bad?
Check the local recording and encoder preview first. If the fault is already present there, review game capture, scene composition, source selection, microphone and desktop-audio routing, and the encoder’s workload. If the local output is clean but the platform reports a problem, use its health messages to check stream format and ingest settings.

- Confirm that the intended game, display, camera, and audio sources are active and routed to the right scene or track.
- Check CPU load and whether the encoder can handle the selected resolution, frame rate, and encoding settings while the game is running.
- Record locally and inspect the result. A local file helps separate capture or encoding problems from network and playback problems.
- When a stream starts but the platform flags its configuration, check the codec, bitrate, number of audio and video streams, audio sample and channel settings, progressive video, frame rate, and keyframe interval against that platform’s requirements.
What bitrate should I use for streaming?
There is no single bitrate that suits every platform, resolution, frame rate, codec, and connection. Use the current recommendations for the platform and ingest protocol you actually use, then ensure the total bitrate fits your stable upload capacity with room for network variation.
For YouTube RTMP/RTMPS, current YouTube guidance recommends H.264, constant bitrate (CBR), up to 60 fps, and a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds). YouTube publishes bitrate ranges by resolution, frame rate, and codec. For example, its guidance lists 17 Mbps for H.264 1080p60 and 12 Mbps for AV1 or H.265 1080p60. These are YouTube recommendations, not universal minimums or settings to copy to another platform.

When the connection is stable but the stream still fails YouTube’s checks, consult YouTube’s encoder settings and the specific health or error message. If upload capacity is the constraint, lower the bitrate first; reduce resolution or frame rate as needed to find a combination your network and encoder can sustain.
