If the connection drops, rerun the same command with the same source and destination; rsync can use the saved partial data where applicable. Keep incomplete files in a staging directory, not where your streaming software expects finished videos.
What you need before uploading
rsyncinstalled on both your local machine and the VPS. Remote-shell transfers require rsync at both ends. The rsync manual documents the remote syntax asrsync [OPTION...] SRC... [USER@]HOST:DEST.- SSH access to the VPS and the username and hostname you use to connect. With a single colon in
user@host:path, rsync uses a remote shell; SSH is a supported choice. See the rsync manual. - A destination directory that exists or can be created, and that your VPS account can write to. A dedicated media directory such as
/srv/videos/is clearer than an ambiguous home or system path.
This example assumes you are running the command on the computer that has the finished video and pushing it to the VPS. Replace the sample username, hostname, and destination with your own.
Upload one video with a recoverable partial transfer
- Choose and check the destination directory on the VPS. Make sure your account has permission to write there. Do not point a streaming server at the partial-transfer directory described below.
- From your local machine, run:
rsync -av --info=progress2 --partial-dir=.rsync-partial -e ssh -- ./video.mp4 user@vps.example:/srv/videos/Here,
./video.mp4is the local source, anduser@vps.example:/srv/videos/is the remote destination.-aselects archive mode,--info=progress2requests overall transfer progress, and-e sshselects SSH as the remote shell.--partial-dir=.rsync-partialstores interrupted data separately so a later transfer can use it to speed recovery. The source and destination order follows rsync’s documented push syntax. See the rsync manual. - Let rsync finish and check its exit status before treating the destination video as ready for playback. A partial file is staging data, not a completed or playable video.
Resume after the connection fails
Run the same command again with the same local source and remote destination paths. Keeping --partial-dir=.rsync-partial in the command lets rsync reuse preserved partial data where applicable. The partial directory is a recovery aid, not a guarantee that every retry will continue byte-for-byte from the exact point of disconnection; behavior and efficiency can depend on rsync versions.

With a relative partial directory such as .rsync-partial, rsync places staging data alongside destination files. The manual notes that a relative partial directory is excluded from transfers by an added filter rule, and warns that the directory must not be writable by other users. Keep it private and leave it separate from any directory a streaming process scans for finished files. Rsync manual details.
Choose the right resume option
| Option | Best fit | Tradeoff and caution |
|---|---|---|
--partial-dir=.rsync-partial |
Ordinary transfers of finished videos when you want incomplete data kept away from the final filename. | Requires a safe, private staging directory. Reuse behavior and efficiency can depend on rsync versions. Rsync manual. |
--append-verify |
A specialized case: the destination is known to be an exact prefix of a source file that is still growing, and you want the existing contents verified. | Not a general-purpose resume switch for an arbitrary interrupted video; verification adds work and the growing-file assumption still applies. Rsync manual. |
Do not choose --append just because a transfer stopped. It assumes that the receiving file’s existing bytes exactly match the beginning of the source, and is intended for files known to be growing. --append-verify verifies file data as part of that specialized workflow. For a normal, finished video, use the partial-directory workflow instead. Rsync manual.

The shortcut -P means --partial --progress; it does not select a separate partial directory. If you want incomplete data kept in a staging directory, specify --partial-dir explicitly. Rsync manual.
Upload a directory carefully
Rsync’s trailing-slash behavior changes what is copied: a source directory written with a trailing slash means its contents, while a source directory without one names the directory itself. Before syncing a full video library, check the exact path semantics in the rsync manual and try the command on a small sample directory so you can confirm the resulting layout on the VPS.

Protect files while they transfer
- Keep incomplete uploads out of the path your streaming software reads. A staged partial video is not a valid finished asset.
- A relative
--partial-dirshould not be writable by other users. Rsync adds a filter rule to exclude a relative partial directory from transfers; review the manual if you customize filters or staging paths. Rsync manual. - Modern in-place reuse of a partial-directory file requires rsync 3.2.0 or newer at both ends. Check the installed versions if retries do not behave as expected. Rsync manual.
- Avoid
--inplacecasually for files that could be read during upload. An interrupted or failed update can leave the destination inconsistent, and other users should not access the file while it is being updated. Rsync manual. - Video compression with
-zis not a guaranteed speed improvement. Treat it as an optional choice to measure for your own files and connection, not a default requirement.
Check whether the upload completed
A successful rsync transfer is useful evidence that the copy completed. If you need an independent integrity check, generate a cryptographic checksum for the source and destination with tools appropriate to your operating systems, then compare the results. Confirm the checksum command and paths for your chosen systems before relying on it; the rsync manuals cited here do not provide a distribution-specific checksum recipe.

Rsync says it cannot run on the remote host
Confirm that rsync is installed on the VPS as well as locally. A remote-shell transfer needs rsync at both endpoints. Rsync manual.

Permission denied or destination cannot be created
Check that the remote username is correct and that it has write permission for the chosen directory. Use a dedicated directory your VPS account can access instead of assuming a system path is writable.
The retry does not use partial data as expected
Keep the same source, destination, and --partial-dir value on the retry. Check rsync versions on both machines: modern in-place reuse of partial-dir data requires version 3.2.0 or newer at both ends. Rsync’s documentation also notes that partial-directory behavior and efficiency can depend on version. Rsync manual.

The streaming software sees a broken video
Do not make the staging directory a watched media folder. Let rsync complete, then use the finished destination file; never treat the partial data as a playable asset.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep a YouTube channel live 24/7 from uploaded videos, StreamNeo is an alternative to maintaining your own VPS transfer and streaming setup. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. It is for YouTube streams from uploaded videos, not live camera feeds. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start the free day.
