Make an end-to-end suite easier to maintain by keeping it focused on critical cross-system behavior, isolating each test, choosing resilient selectors, waiting for observable outcomes, and investigating failures that pass only on retry. Then use runtime, retry frequency, and redundant coverage to decide what to simplify next.

Keep end-to-end tests for behavior that needs the whole system

End-to-end tests exercise a user path across multiple parts of an application. That makes them valuable for checking important behavior that smaller tests cannot reliably assess, but comparatively slow and costly to maintain. Use them for critical journeys and system-level properties; test smaller units of logic and component interactions at lower layers when those tests can catch the same defect.

Google’s 2015 testing-pyramid guidance offered 70% unit, 20% integration, and 10% end-to-end as a starting heuristic—not a measured optimum or a rule every team should meet. Google’s 2016 end-to-end testing guidance likewise emphasizes the trade-off: whole-system confidence comes with greater slowness, flakiness risk, and maintenance burden than smaller tests. Treat the mix as a design choice for your application, not a quota.

Decide whether a flow needs an end-to-end test

  • Keep an end-to-end test when a failure in an important user journey could arise from interactions across services, configuration, or the real application stack.
  • Move a check lower when it verifies a small calculation, component state, or isolated rule that a unit or integration test can cover more directly.
  • Look for multiple end-to-end tests that repeat the same interaction without protecting meaningfully different outcomes. Preserve coverage of distinct risks rather than duplicating steps.

A useful question is not “Does every user flow have a test?” but “Which failures would only this full path reliably reveal?”

Make every test independent

A test that depends on a previous test’s browser state or data can fail for reasons unrelated to the behavior it is supposed to check. Playwright recommends giving tests their own storage, data, and cookies; its documentation notes that isolation improves reproducibility, debugging, and resistance to cascading failures. Cypress also recommends isolated specs and controlled application state, with end-to-end test isolation enabled by default.

Remove shared-state dependencies

  • Set up the required user, permissions, and records explicitly for the test rather than relying on a prior test to create them.
  • Use a fresh browser context or equivalent isolated state, including cookies and local storage, where supported by your framework.
  • Prefer ephemeral test data where practical. Give records unique identifiers and clean them up or let the test environment expire them so runs do not contaminate one another.
  • Run a test by itself as well as in the full suite. If it only passes in one order, investigate the hidden dependency instead of preserving that order as a workaround.

Do not test login unnecessarily through the login screen

If the behavior under test is not authentication, use programmatic setup such as a direct login mechanism to establish an authenticated state. Keep UI-driven login coverage for tests whose purpose is to verify the login journey itself. This avoids making every unrelated test depend on the speed and reliability of the same login flow.

Choose selectors that survive ordinary UI changes

Selectors based on styling classes, long CSS chains, or incidental DOM nesting often break when the presentation changes, even if the user-facing behavior remains correct. Prefer selectors that describe what the user can perceive, or define an explicit test contract when that is more appropriate.

Selector approach What it communicates Trade-off
Role and accessible name The visible semantic control the user interacts with, such as a button named “Save”. Expresses user-facing intent, but the test should change when the accessible name or role meaningfully changes.
Dedicated test attribute, such as data-cy An explicit application-to-test contract for locating an element. Can remain stable across presentation changes, but the application team must maintain the attribute and its meaning.
Styling class or incidental markup path Usually an implementation or presentation detail rather than the intended interaction. Can be coupled to refactors and redesigns that do not change behavior.

Playwright recommends user-facing attributes and explicit contracts over selectors tied to DOM structure. Cypress recommends dedicated data attributes such as data-cy when tests need a selector separated from styling and behavior changes. Choose a role/name locator when the user-visible meaning is the contract; choose a test attribute when the test needs a stable, deliberately maintained hook.

Wait for the expected state, not a fixed duration

A fixed sleep assumes that the application will always become ready within a chosen number of milliseconds. If it is too short, the test races the application; if it is too long, every successful run pays the delay. Prefer framework actions that wait for actionability and assertions that wait for a desired condition.

Replace elapsed-time checks with outcome checks

  • After submitting a form, assert that the success message becomes visible.
  • After navigation, assert the expected URL or page heading.
  • Before interacting with a control, use the framework’s normal locator action so it can wait for the control to be ready.

Playwright documents automatic actionability checks before actions and asynchronous assertions that retry until the expected condition is met. These mechanisms reduce timing races when the issue is readiness, but they cannot fix bad test data, an unstable environment, or a real product defect. A timeout should lead to investigation of what state failed to arrive, not an automatic increase to every timeout in the suite.

Treat retries as evidence of a flake

Retries can expose intermittent behavior or keep a pipeline moving while a failure is investigated, but a test that fails first and passes on retry is not equivalent to a clean first-pass success. Playwright retries are disabled by default; when enabled, Playwright classifies a first-run failure followed by a retry pass as flaky. Cypress similarly warns that tests which retry every run consume time and become technical debt.

Keep first-pass health visible

  • Report first-pass failures separately from the final pipeline result, so retries do not make suite health look cleaner than it is.
  • Track which tests fail, how often they retry, and whether failures cluster around a particular environment, dependency, or data setup.
  • Use retries as a temporary diagnostic or operational measure, not as the permanent repair for an unexplained failure.

Capture enough context to diagnose failures

For CI failures, Playwright recommends using its trace viewer, which can show a timeline, DOM snapshots, and network requests. Its documentation describes configuring traces on the first retry. Retaining this evidence can help distinguish a selector that no longer matches from a slow response, unexpected state, or failed request. Choose artifact retention deliberately so useful failure context is available without collecting unnecessary data from every passing run.

Use suite data to choose what to fix first

Maintenance work is easier to prioritize when it is based on observed costs and repeated failure patterns rather than whichever test is most irritating today. Cypress recommends inspecting the slowest tests and specs, tests that repeatedly retry, and UI elements with interaction counts disproportionate to their importance.

  • Over-tested interactions: check whether many tests exercise the same low-risk control while a critical path or system property lacks meaningful coverage.

Use these signals to decide whether to split a test, simplify its setup, improve a selector or assertion, or remove redundant coverage. The goal is not simply a smaller suite: it is a suite whose remaining end-to-end tests protect important behavior and produce failures that are easier to explain.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should every user flow have an end-to-end test?

No. Reserve end-to-end coverage for important paths and system behaviors that smaller tests cannot reliably assess; cover simpler logic at lower layers.

Are retries hiding flaky tests?

They can if reporting shows only the final pipeline result. Track first-pass failures separately and investigate tests that pass only after retry.
