For a pre-recorded YouTube playlist stream, use a supported modern GPU hardware encoder when CPU headroom is limited; choose OBS’s x264 CPU encoder when your processor can sustain the settings and your test looks good. Neither option wins in every setup. The playlist plays the video files; the encoder separately compresses the OBS scene for YouTube.
What CPU and GPU encoding actually do
In OBS, a Media Source or VLC Video source plays the prerecorded material into a scene. OBS then encodes the scene and sends that outgoing stream to YouTube. Choosing CPU or GPU encoding changes the latter step—not how the playlist is organized or whether its files play.
OBS calls its included software encoder x264. It uses CPU capacity. Hardware encoders use specialized components, usually on the GPU, to take encoding work off the CPU. This is distinct from a source’s hardware-decoding option, which affects playback decoding rather than the outgoing stream encoder.
CPU vs. GPU: which should you choose?
| Factor | CPU software encoding (x264) | GPU hardware encoding |
|---|---|---|
| Resource use | Uses CPU capacity; suitable when the processor has headroom for the chosen settings and other work. | Can move encoding work off the CPU. The GPU, operating system, and drivers must support the encoder and codec. |
| Image quality | Can be a good choice when a test at the intended bitrate looks satisfactory. Results depend on settings and system. | Modern hardware encoders can offer good quality with low performance impact, according to OBS. OBS cautions that earlier-generation hardware encoders may look worse than x264 at the same bitrate. |
| Compatibility | x264 is included with OBS. | Availability varies by encoder family, GPU generation, operating system, and drivers. OBS documents NVIDIA NVENC, AMD AMF, Intel QSV, and Apple VideoToolbox with platform-specific notes. |
| Consider it when | Your CPU has sufficient capacity and a representative test shows stable output and acceptable quality. | CPU capacity is a constraint and your computer has a supported, suitable modern hardware encoder. |
OBS generally recommends modern hardware encoders for performance because encoding can be handled by a specialized component rather than the CPU. That is not a universal image-quality verdict: there is no single comparison that covers every processor, encoder generation, codec, preset, bitrate, resolution, and scene. Pick based on your equipment and a test of the stream you intend to run.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Set up the playlist and outgoing encoder in OBS
- Add the playback source. For a single file, add a Media Source and enable its loop option if it should repeat. For a multi-file playlist, add a VLC Video source; it can hold multiple items, preserve or shuffle their order, and loop the playlist. VLC must be installed for this source to be available.
- Check playlist behavior. Confirm the order, shuffle setting, and loop behavior match the broadcast you want. Test transitions and audio across the points where files change or the playlist restarts.
- Choose the outgoing encoder. In OBS output settings, select x264 or a hardware encoder actually supported by your system. Check the codec against YouTube’s current live ingest options. Do not mistake a source’s hardware-decoding setting for the stream encoder choice.
- Use YouTube’s ingest baseline. YouTube’s live encoder guidance recommends CBR and RTMPS. Its recommended keyframe frequency is 2 seconds; do not exceed 4 seconds. Follow the bitrate table on YouTube’s live settings page for the resolution and frame rate you select rather than applying an unrelated bitrate.
- Test the real workload. Run a private or otherwise appropriate preflight using representative motion and audio. Watch OBS performance indicators and YouTube stream health. A still or low-motion sample may not reveal issues that appear in the actual playlist.
- Adjust before buying hardware. If performance problems appear, check scaling, media decoding, other concurrent work, and unnecessary scene sources. OBS advises reducing source resolution when full source resolution is not needed. Re-test after each change.
YouTube transcodes the incoming stream into output formats for viewers. Your task is to deliver a stable, supported ingest stream, not to encode every viewer playback variant locally.
How to diagnose a weak or unstable stream
- OBS struggles while CPU is heavily occupied: close unnecessary work, simplify the scene, and test a supported modern hardware encoder if available. If using x264, try settings your CPU can sustain; the encoder comparison alone does not prove a CPU upgrade is necessary.
- Hardware encoding is unavailable: confirm the relevant encoder is supported by the GPU, operating system, and installed drivers, then check OBS’s encoder choices. Use x264 if that is the available option and testing shows it works reliably.
- The stream looks poor at the chosen bitrate: check YouTube’s bitrate recommendation for your exact output resolution and frame rate. Compare x264 and hardware output only under the same target conditions; generation and settings affect the result.
- Playback stutters or a playlist item fails: investigate the source file, playlist order, VLC availability for a VLC Video source, and the playback workload separately from the outgoing encoder. A stream-encoder change will not fix a broken playlist entry.
- YouTube reports stream-health trouble: verify the selected codec and ingest settings, including CBR, keyframe interval, and RTMPS where available. Repeat the preflight and monitor stream health before relying on the setup.
A playlist with little animation or compositing does not automatically need a powerful graphics card just because it sends video. There is no universal minimum computer specification established for this workflow. Consider a GPU with a hardware encoder only if your existing system lacks a suitable option or testing demonstrates an encoding bottleneck.
