If YouTube reports “RTMP publish rejected with error code 2,” first refresh the stream key and copy the active stream URL from YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Then use the encoder log and YouTube’s stream-health message to determine whether the problem is connecting to the ingest server or whether YouTube is rejecting the stream after connection. YouTube’s public help pages do not define that exact error phrase, so code 2 alone does not establish a cause.
What does “publish rejected with error code 2” mean?
The exact phrase “publish rejected with error code 2” is not defined in the YouTube help pages cited here. It is not enough information to conclude that the stream key is wrong, a port is blocked, or the video codec is unsupported. Check the complete encoder message and the corresponding status in Live Control Room before choosing a fix.
Keep three situations separate: the encoder cannot connect to the ingest endpoint; it connects but YouTube rejects the publish attempt; or YouTube receives the stream but reports a format or stream-health problem. Each points to a different diagnostic path.
Fix the common encoder startup problem first
- Capture the error details. Note the full text, encoder or app name and version, whether it says “connect” or “publish/rejected,” and the Live Control Room health message. Do not share screenshots or logs that reveal your stream key.
- Refresh the stream key. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room, select the Stream setup, copy the key for the active stream, and replace the key in your encoder. YouTube recommends getting a new key in Live Control Room and updating the encoder when an error occurs while starting a third-party encoder (YouTube Help: Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream).
- Copy the active stream URL. Use the URL shown in the current Live Control Room setup rather than a remembered or saved endpoint. Confirm that the encoder’s URL and stream key belong to the same active setup.
- Try publishing again and check both sides. Look at the encoder log to see whether it established a connection, and check Live Control Room for the matching stream-health status. Follow the branch below that matches what you see.
If the encoder cannot connect
When the log shows a connection failure before a stream reaches YouTube, start with the endpoint, protocol, and connection rather than changing video settings at random.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Endpoint: Copy the ingest URL from the active Live Control Room setup and verify that it is entered in the encoder’s server or URL field.
- Protocol: If you use RTMPS, reveal and copy the RTMPS URL in Live Control Room, and make sure the encoder supports RTMPS. If YouTube reports a specific SSL error, its guidance suggests trying port 443; do not treat that as a universal fix for code 2. See YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance.
- Encoder and network: Update the encoder, inspect its output and dashboard errors, and check CPU load. If the encoder appears healthy but the connection to YouTube is unreliable, test outbound internet connectivity. YouTube suggests trying another encoder as a diagnostic; if the outbound connection appears faulty, contact your internet provider.
Changing codec or keyframe settings is unlikely to resolve a failure that occurs before the encoder connects. First establish which endpoint and protocol the encoder is actually using.
If YouTube connects but rejects or flags the stream
If the encoder establishes a connection, use the exact Live Control Room message to check stream ingest. YouTube documents ingest-error categories involving codec, container, bitrate, video stream settings, and keyframe frequency; their presence does not mean any one of them caused every publish rejection. See YouTube’s live error reference and current live encoder settings.

- Compare the encoder’s selected video and audio settings with YouTube’s supported live-stream settings.
- Check the container and bitrate against the specific warning or error shown in Live Control Room.
- Check that the encoder is sending the intended video stream and that its keyframe interval is set to two seconds where possible. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe frequency and says it should not exceed four seconds.
- Inspect the local encoder output and stream-health dashboard for the error that persists after publishing.
These are targeted checks for an established connection with an ingest or health warning. They do not replace refreshing the key or verifying the URL when the encoder cannot connect.
Do not confuse YouTube’s message with an OBS “-2” log
A historical OBS forum thread from 2020 reports a macOS connection log ending in -2: Connection to rtmp://a.rtmp.youtube.com/live2 failed: -2. That is an OBS connection-failure report, not an authoritative explanation of YouTube’s separate wording “publish rejected with error code 2.” In that particular discussion, an OBS administrator suggested testing with bind-to-IP and network optimizations disabled; the user later said a socket-loop setting carried over in an imported Windows profile caused their issue. Treat that as one case, not a general code definition or a fix for all encoders (OBS forum thread).
