Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteFor the most reliable Playwright screenshot comparisons, generate and compare baselines in the same pinned operating-system and browser environment. Linux and macOS may render differently because of platform, fonts, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. If you need visual coverage on both systems, keep separate baselines for each instead of expecting a tolerance setting to make their output identical. Playwright’s visual comparison guidance recommends running tests in the environment where the baselines were generated.
Why do Playwright screenshots differ on Linux and macOS?
A screenshot records rendered pixels, and rendering can vary with the host operating system and version, settings, hardware, power source, and whether the browser runs headlessly. Fonts and other platform-dependent rendering details can also change the image. Playwright therefore includes browser and platform information in default snapshot names and cautions that visual output differs across environments. It does not publish a general Linux-versus-macOS mismatch rate or establish that any specific pair of systems will be pixel-identical.
Retries and comparison tolerances address different problems: retries help wait for a stable capture, while tolerance controls how much pixel difference the assertion accepts. Neither makes the two operating systems render the same way.
Choose one canonical environment or separate platform baselines
Use one canonical rendering environment for simpler regression checks
If your main goal is to detect UI changes consistently, choose one operating system, browser engine and version, and runner image for baseline creation and comparison. Run CI comparisons in that same environment. This answers whether the interface changed in the canonical renderer, rather than whether every supported platform renders it identically.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Keep per-platform baselines when both renderings matter
If Linux and macOS are both product requirements, treat them as distinct visual test environments. Generate and review a baseline on each target, and keep the platform identity in your Playwright project configuration or snapshot paths. This catches platform-specific visual issues, but adds baselines and review work. Playwright’s default snapshot naming already accounts for browser and platform.
Set up a repeatable Playwright visual test workflow
- Choose and pin the baseline lane. Select the browser engine, Playwright package and browser installation, and execution image for each lane. Keeping these fixed is practical implementation advice based on Playwright’s recommendation to match the baseline environment; it is not a guarantee that other sources of rendering variation disappear.
- Generate baselines in the chosen lane. Run the tests there, inspect the screenshots, and commit reviewed snapshot files to version control.
- Run CI in the same lane. Compare against the matching baseline environment. For separate Linux and macOS coverage, generate and compare each platform’s snapshots in its own lane.
- Make the page ready before capture. Wait for application-specific readiness, control test data, and avoid time-dependent content where possible. Playwright’s screenshot assertion retries until it sees two consecutive matching screenshots, but that does not stabilize external content or substitute for an application-ready condition.
- Fix known visual volatility narrowly. Use Playwright’s
stylePathoption to apply a stylesheet that hides unavoidable dynamic content, such as a changing timestamp or animation. Avoid hiding elements that are part of the behavior you intend to test. - Choose screenshot scale deliberately. Use CSS-pixel scale or device-pixel scale consistently between baseline generation and comparison. Playwright Test screenshot assertions default to CSS scale; device scale reflects device pixels and produces larger output on high-DPI displays.
- Review diffs before changing acceptance settings. Begin with strict or default comparison settings. If a difference is understood rendering noise, use a narrowly justified threshold or pixel allowance. When the design intentionally changes, update snapshots in the canonical environment with
--update-snapshots, inspect the resulting images, and then commit them.
toHaveScreenshot() is a Playwright Test assertion and requires the Playwright test runner. API options and defaults can vary with installed versions; check the documentation for your version before relying on a particular setting.

Keep scale and comparison tolerance under control
Screenshot scale determines which pixel grid is compared; tolerance determines how much difference the comparison accepts. Keep scale fixed within each baseline lane, then use tolerance only for known, reviewed variation. Playwright provides a perceived color threshold as well as maxDiffPixels and maxDiffPixelRatio controls in test configuration. A permissive allowance can hide genuine layout, font, or rendering regressions, so record why each non-default allowance is needed and keep its scope narrow. See the TestConfig API reference.
Common problems and fixes
- The same test fails only on one operating system: Check that its baseline was generated on that platform and that the browser, fonts, viewport, scale, and runner image match the intended lane. Do not solve a platform mismatch by broadly increasing tolerance.
- Repeated captures differ in the same run: Check for animation, delayed application state, changing data, or external content. Wait for the application’s actual ready condition and use
stylePathonly for unavoidable volatile visuals. The assertion’s retry behavior cannot make the page deterministic by itself. - The output dimensions or pixel detail changed: Confirm that
scaleis unchanged and that the baseline and comparison use the same viewport and device configuration. Device-pixel scale can produce larger images on high-DPI output. - A visual change is intentional: Regenerate snapshots in the matching baseline environment with
--update-snapshots, review the diffs, and commit only the expected changes. - A tolerance setting hides a real regression: Reduce or remove the allowance, inspect the pixel diff, and add back only the smallest justified threshold or pixel limit. Tolerance affects acceptance, not rendering.

Does `toHaveScreenshot()` make Linux and macOS output identical?
No. It retries for a stable capture, but it does not equalize operating systems, fonts, or other environmental differences.
Should I use separate Playwright snapshots for Linux and macOS?
Yes, if you need to verify each platform’s visual rendering. Keep the baselines and comparisons in matching platform lanes.
