For a regular Playwright screenshot, call and await page.addStyleTag() after navigating to the page and before calling page.screenshot(). Use its content, path, or url option to supply the stylesheet. If the CSS should affect only the capture—not the live page state—use the screenshot-time style option instead.
Add CSS to the page before the screenshot
This Node.js example injects CSS into the page after navigation. Replace the example URL and selectors with the ones for your page.

})();Awaiting page.addStyleTag() ensures the stylesheet has loaded or the supplied CSS has been injected before execution moves to the screenshot. The method accepts inline CSS through content, a local stylesheet through path, or a stylesheet URL through url. See the Playwright Page API for the current method options.
Use a local stylesheet or a URL
For CSS maintained in a file, pass its path instead of inline content:

Use the approach that matches the output you need: a page-level stylesheet, a one-time screenshot adjustment, or a visual test assertion.

Keep the adjustment limited to the screenshot
If the page itself should remain untouched outside capture, use style on page.screenshot(). Playwright documents this option for hiding dynamic elements or changing properties to make captures more repeatable; it was added in Playwright v1.41. Check the Page API for details.

In a test using the Playwright Test runner, pass the stylesheet path as stylePath to toHaveScreenshot():

});stylePath belongs to the screenshot assertion API; for a standalone page.screenshot() call, use its style string option. The API assertions reference and visual comparisons guide document screenshot assertions and stylesheet use. Screenshot assertions work with the Playwright Test runner. Before comparing with an expectation, Playwright waits for two consecutive screenshots to produce the same result.

Handle timing, dynamic content, and iframes
- Navigate first. Call
page.goto()before injecting CSS so the stylesheet is added to the intended document. - Wait for the page state you need. If the screenshot depends on content that appears after navigation, wait for that application state before styling and capturing.
- Apply CSS and await it. Use
page.addStyleTag()when modifying the document, or choose screenshot-time styling for capture-only adjustments. - Capture after the styling step. Keep the screenshot call after the awaited injection or assertion setup.
If the element to style lives inside a particular iframe, use frame.addStyleTag() on that frame. The Page API describes screenshot-time style as applying across inner frames as well. Refer to the Frame API and Page API for the relevant behavior.
Troubleshoot CSS that does not appear in the screenshot
- The page looks unchanged: Confirm that navigation completed before injection, the stylesheet is awaited, and the selector matches an element in the document receiving the CSS.
- A local stylesheet is missing: Check that the path passed to
pathpoints to the intended file from the running script’s working directory. - The styled content is in an iframe: Add the stylesheet to the relevant frame with
frame.addStyleTag(), rather than assuming a page-level stylesheet targets that frame’s document. - A screenshot assertion rejects the option: Use
stylePathwithtoHaveScreenshot(); usestylewith a standalonepage.screenshot()call. - Visual comparisons vary between runs: The Playwright visual comparisons guide notes that operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, headless mode, and other factors can affect rendering. Run comparisons in the same environment used to create the reference images; CSS can control page-level dynamic content but cannot guarantee identical rendering across environments.
