A 429 from Abstract’s Website Screenshot API means your client is sending requests too quickly or otherwise exceeding a request limit. Slow the request rate, reduce concurrency, and honor a Retry-After header if the response actually includes one. Abstract publishes separate total-request allowances and per-second limits, so check both your account plan and the billing period selected.

Abstract Screenshot API limits: request allowance versus requests per second

There are two different limits to keep in view. A plan’s total request allowance applies across its subscription term; its requests-per-second (RPS) limit controls how quickly requests may be sent. You can hit an RPS threshold before using the plan’s total allowance. Abstract’s terms also describe consequences for repeated RPS exceedances, so a 429 is not necessarily evidence that the total quota is exhausted. See Abstract’s Terms of Service.

Plan detail What Abstract currently lists How to interpret it
Free 100 requests; 1 request per second Confirm the allowance and period on the current product page and in your account before planning usage.
Standard 3 requests per second; total allowance displayed as 60,000 requests per year in the annual view or 60,000 per month in the monthly view The total quota depends on the billing view. Do not treat the monthly and annual figures as interchangeable.

These figures are the plan information shown on Abstract’s Website Screenshot API product page. The page’s displayed Standard total changes with the billing view; verify the selected billing period and your account’s plan rather than inferring a quota from the RPS figure. The current product page does not establish a complete limit table for every plan in every billing configuration.

Repeated exceedances and plan terms

Abstract’s terms say repeated RPS threshold exceedances may result in an automatic upgrade for eligible plans. For the highest available or custom plans, continued excess may instead lead to rate limiting or other remedial action under the applicable terms. That is distinct from reaching a total request allowance. Check the terms that apply to your subscription before relying on automatic upgrades or assuming what a particular 429 means.

What to do when a request returns HTTP 429

Abstract’s general 429 guide defines the status as too many requests in a period and recommends waiting for Retry-After when that header is present. Its general rate-limit guidance also recommends exponential backoff with jitter. These are general recommendations, not confirmation that the Screenshot API always returns that header or any particular rate-limit headers.

  1. Stop immediate retries. Do not replay the request in a tight loop. That can add load while the limit is still active.
  2. Inspect the actual response. Record the status, response time, response body, and headers your request received. If Retry-After is present, wait for the stated interval before retrying. Do not assume it exists if it is absent.
  3. Reduce request pressure. Lower concurrency and pace requests to stay within the RPS limit for your plan. If multiple workers share one account, coordinate their rate rather than limiting each worker independently.
  4. Retry cautiously if there is no stated wait. Use capped exponential backoff with random jitter and a finite retry count. If retries are exhausted, surface the error or place the work in a queue for later instead of retrying indefinitely.
  5. Check total usage and plan settings. Compare account usage with the applicable total allowance and confirm the selected billing period. A per-second limit and a total allowance are different constraints.

Abstract’s general guidance is available in its HTTP 429 guide and API rate-limit guide. The reviewed product information does not document a Screenshot API-specific 429 payload, guarantee a Retry-After header, or specify an X-RateLimit header set. Use the headers actually returned by your account rather than coding against an assumed reset time or response-body field.

Build a bounded retry policy

Implement the waiting and retry policy in the client or job queue that sends Screenshot API requests. The following JavaScript helper illustrates the decision logic for a fetch response; it does not make the API call or assume undocumented Abstract headers. Set maxRetries and maxDelayMs to limits appropriate for your job. If a Retry-After value is present, the helper waits for it; otherwise it uses exponential backoff with jitter.

const sleep = (ms) => new Promise(resolve => setTimeout(resolve, ms));

async function retryAfter429(makeRequest, {
  maxRetries = 4,
  maxDelayMs = 30_000,
  baseDelayMs = 500,
} = {}) {
  for (let attempt = 0; ; attempt++) {
    const response = await makeRequest();
    if (response.status !== 429 || attempt >= maxRetries) return response;

    const retryAfter = response.headers.get('Retry-After');
    let delayMs;
    if (retryAfter && /^d+(.d+)?$/.test(retryAfter.trim())) {
      delayMs = Math.min(Number(retryAfter) * 1000, maxDelayMs);
    } else {
      const ceiling = Math.min(baseDelayMs * (2 ** attempt), maxDelayMs);
      delayMs = Math.random() * ceiling;
    }
    await sleep(delayMs);
  }
}

This example accepts a numeric Retry-After value in seconds and otherwise backs off. If your client needs to support other HTTP-date representations of that header, parse them explicitly. A response with a 429 after the configured retries is returned to the caller, where the application should log or queue it rather than silently discarding it.

Prevent avoidable 429 responses

  • Set a shared rate limiter. Enforce the account’s RPS ceiling across all processes and environments using the same credentials.
  • Bound concurrency. A burst of simultaneous jobs can exceed a per-second threshold even when the average request rate looks low.
  • Deduplicate pending work. Do not submit the same URL again while an equivalent screenshot request is already in flight.
  • Cache reusable screenshots. Reuse a result when the page and capture settings have not changed enough to require a new image.
  • Track both dimensions of usage. Monitor total requests over the plan term as well as request bursts, and alert before either becomes a production issue.

Batch retries are not proof that single requests retry automatically

Abstract’s changelog says that on April 9, 2024, it added enhanced error handling for batch-processing requests, including detailed error reporting, standardized error codes, and automatic retries for failed tasks. That entry concerns batch processing. It does not establish that an ordinary single screenshot request returning 429 is automatically retried. Design single-request retry behavior in your own client unless the current documentation for your endpoint explicitly says otherwise. Abstract’s product page also records expanded support for password-protected website capture on May 20, 2024.

Troubleshooting a persistent 429

  • It continues after you slow one worker: another worker may be sending requests with the same account. Apply a shared limiter and inspect aggregate traffic.
  • It appears despite low total usage: verify the plan’s per-second limit; unused total quota does not remove the RPS threshold.
  • You cannot tell when to retry: inspect the real response headers. If no Retry-After is present, use bounded backoff with jitter rather than inventing a reset interval.
  • Retries never stop: add a finite retry cap, log exhausted requests, and send them to an operator-visible queue or error path.
  • Batch jobs behave differently: do not assume batch-processing retry behavior applies to a single capture. Check the specific endpoint’s current documentation and actual response.
  • The plan allowance is unclear: compare the account’s selected billing period with the product page’s monthly or annual display and confirm the account’s current subscription terms.

If your underlying need is to capture screenshots rather than specifically to use Abstract, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. One GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. For example, this cURL request saves a WebP screenshot of Stripe; see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for options and response details.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Abstract’s Screenshot API always send a Retry-After header with a 429?

The available product-specific documentation does not establish that it does. Inspect the headers on your own response and use bounded backoff if the header is absent.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does Abstract automatically retry a single screenshot request that gets a 429?

The documented automatic retries concern failed batch-processing tasks; they do not establish automatic retries for ordinary single screenshot requests.
