For a playlist of local cartoon files in OBS, start with the built-in VLC Video source: it supports playlists, looping, and optional shuffle, so a third-party plugin is not needed for basic continuous playback. Install VLC first. If you need to edit the playlist while a video is playing or keep the current item after restarting OBS, consider the third-party Media Playlist Source plugin—but check its current compatibility with your OBS version and operating system.
Playback automation does not grant cartoon streaming rights or guarantee monetization. Check permissions, test the full playlist and audio path, and plan separately for YouTube’s live-content and archive rules.

For a basic multi-file loop, VLC Video is the straightforward first choice because it already provides the core playlist controls. Choose the plugin for a specific workflow need, not simply because the stream is intended to run for a long time. The available feature descriptions do not establish how reliably any option will run continuously on your particular computer or OBS setup.
Set up a local cartoon playlist in OBS
Before adding episodes
Confirm that you have permission to livestream the cartoons in the territories where your audience may watch. Check whether the permission covers music, livestreaming, and any archive you intend to keep. If the content is licensed, ask whether the rights holder must allowlist your YouTube channel in Content ID; a license alone may not prevent an automated interruption.

For one video on repeat
- In OBS, add a Media Source to the scene and select the video file.
- Enable the source’s Loop option.
- Set restart-on-activation or end-of-file visibility behavior only if it suits the scene. If you deactivate and reopen the source, OBS notes that playback may take a short time to resume.
For several files in a playlist
- Install VLC before opening OBS. The VLC Video source will not appear unless VLC is installed; match the architecture when using 64-bit OBS by installing 64-bit VLC.
- In the OBS scene, add a VLC Video source and add the local cartoon files to its playlist.
- Enable Loop Playlist for continuous repetition. Enable Shuffle Playlist only if playing episodes in a changing order is appropriate.
- Choose the source’s visibility behavior and, if relevant to your media, review its network-caching controls.
- Preview the scene through a complete transition between files. Confirm that the video remains visible and audio reaches the intended OBS mixer output.
When the third-party plugin may help
Media Playlist Source is worth evaluating if you need to add or reorder items while playback continues, select a particular item, or retain the currently playing file across an OBS restart. The OBS Forum resource describes a minimum OBS version of 30.0.0, while an April 13, 2025 project update says the upstream change it relies on has been merged since OBS 31 and that custom OBS builds are no longer needed. Because the version notes do not fully align, use the plugin’s current release instructions for your operating system and OBS build rather than assuming compatibility.
What to check before a long YouTube broadcast
Copyright can interrupt a live stream
YouTube says all live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content. If it detects a match, it may show a placeholder, warn you to stop, or interrupt or terminate the broadcast if the issue continues. Even licensed material may be interrupted if the rights holder has not allowlisted your channel in Content ID. YouTube: Copyright issues with live streams

YouTube’s livestream terms require the provider to represent that it has the rights needed to use the live content on Google services, including applicable music licensing rights. Permission does not guarantee monetization
Copyright enforcement and YouTube’s channel-level monetization review are separate. YouTube’s reused-content policy can apply even when a creator has permission from the rights holder. On July 15, 2025, YouTube renamed “repetitious content” as “inauthentic content” to clarify that repetitive or mass-produced material can be ineligible; its examples include similar or repetitive videos with minimal variation. Do not rely on a complete YouTube archive for an overlong stream
YouTube says it can automatically archive a livestream that is less than 12 hours, but warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If you need a copy, make a local recording backup. YouTube: Archive live streams
Troubleshoot common playlist problems
- VLC Video is missing: Install VLC, then restart or reopen OBS. If OBS is 64-bit, install 64-bit VLC.
- The playlist stops after one file: Check that the source is VLC Video rather than Media Source, and enable Loop Playlist. Media Source loops a single file, not a multi-item playlist.
- A source resumes slowly after being hidden: OBS notes that reopening an inactive Media Source can cause a short delay. Test the scene’s activation and visibility behavior before relying on it.
- The picture continues but audio is missing or routed incorrectly: Review the source and mixer behavior in the actual scene, then listen through at least one file transition. Do not assume the playlist’s video behavior confirms correct audio routing.
- The third-party plugin will not install or load: Check its current release notes and installation steps against your precise OBS version and operating system. The resource’s version notes are not fully consistent across releases.
- YouTube interrupts the stream: Check the live-control-room notice and resolve any rights or Content ID allowlisting issue with the rights holder. Changing a playlist plugin does not clear a copyright match.
- The stream has no complete archive: An archive is not assured for a broadcast over 12 hours. Keep a local recording if the recording matters.
