If a camera, microphone, or capture card is missing from your laptop capture app, first check whether Windows detects it. If it fails across apps, investigate its connection, hardware switch, Windows access, or driver; if it works elsewhere, check the affected app’s permission and selected source. This guide covers Windows, Zoom, and OBS; steps and labels can vary by device and software version.
Find out where the problem is
Test the camera or microphone in Windows settings or another app that can use it, then check the app where it fails. This separates a device or Windows problem from an app-specific configuration problem.
- Missing across apps or from Windows device lists: check the connection, camera switch, Windows access and device enablement, then drivers.
- Works in another app but not this one: check the app’s permission and make sure it has the intended camera or microphone selected.
For a capture card, check whether the operating system and the capture app can see the connected device before changing app settings. OBS documents capture cards as a type of video capture device.
Fix a camera Windows does not detect
- Check the connection. For an external camera or capture device, reconnect it and confirm it is attached properly. If possible, try another available connection on the laptop.
- Check for a hardware switch. Some laptops have a camera switch or button that disables the built-in camera. Turn it on if needed.
- Check Windows camera access. In Windows privacy settings, make sure camera access is enabled and that the relevant app is allowed to use the camera. The precise setting names and paths may differ by Windows version.
- Inspect Device Manager. Find the camera device and enable it if it is disabled.
- Reinstall the device driver if the earlier checks fail. Microsoft’s Windows camera guidance describes uninstalling and reinstalling the camera device, then scanning for hardware changes. Follow the current instructions for your Windows version and device.
Microsoft’s camera troubleshooting guidance covers Windows 10 and 11. Microsoft says Windows 10 support ended October 14, 2025; users still on Windows 10 should account for that status when seeking current support.

Fix a microphone Windows does not detect
- Check Windows microphone access. Allow microphone access, including access for apps or desktop apps as appropriate to how you use the software.
- Check camera access if the microphone is built into a webcam. Microsoft notes that a webcam microphone may also require camera access.
- Check the connection and device list. For an external microphone or headset, reconnect it and see whether Windows lists it as an input device.
- Consider the audio driver only after basic checks. If Windows still does not detect the microphone, Microsoft includes audio-driver reinstallation among its later troubleshooting steps. Use the guidance for your Windows version and laptop.

Fix camera or microphone selection in Zoom
Camera
- Confirm Windows detects the camera, then open Zoom’s video settings and select the intended camera rather than another listed device.
- Allow camera access in Windows, or in the browser if you are using Zoom in a browser. A permission grant does not automatically select the right camera.
- Close other apps or websites that may be using the camera, reconnect the device if external, and restart the computer if it remains unavailable.
- Check for relevant Zoom, Windows, and driver updates if the camera is still not detected.
Zoom lists outdated software, disabled device settings, incorrect camera selection, missing access, and interference from other programs or devices as possible causes. Its camera detection troubleshooting guide describes these checks.

Microphone
- In Zoom’s audio settings, choose the microphone you want to use.
- If it is not listed, check that Zoom has microphone permission. On Windows, check access for apps and desktop apps as appropriate.
- If Windows detects the microphone but Zoom does not, update Zoom and review the Windows audio-driver signal-processing setting mentioned in Zoom’s advanced troubleshooting guidance.

Select a camera, capture card, or audio device in OBS
Video: webcam or capture card
- In the relevant OBS scene, add a Video Capture Device source.
- Open the source properties and choose the intended device from the Device dropdown.
- If the device is absent, check whether Windows detects it and whether its driver supports DirectShow output. OBS states that Windows devices need DirectShow support to work as this source.

Audio: input or output device
- In the scene that needs audio, add an audio input or output device source, depending on what you want to capture.
- Select the intended device in that source’s properties.
- If the device is not available, check Windows detection and permissions before troubleshooting the OBS scene.
OBS explains device-source selection in its Audio Sources documentation. Audio sources can be scoped to a scene, so verify the source in the scene where you expect to capture it.
Choose the right capture path before buying anything
A built-in camera or microphone, an external USB webcam or headset, and a capture card solve different needs. First establish whether the operating system detects the device, whether the app supports and selects it, and whether you need video, audio, or both. An external webcam is a fallback only if the built-in camera remains unusable after troubleshooting; a new device will not fix missing permissions, an incorrect app selection, or a driver-recognition problem. Check compatibility with your laptop and application before buying.
