Happo adds hosted visual regression and accessibility checks to a React project: configure the UI states and browser targets you want captured, run its CLI locally or in CI, then review screenshots against a baseline. It complements—not replaces—functional tests. This review covers the documented setup and workflow, how Storybook and Playwright fit, and the evidence limits relevant to teams in India.
What Happo does—and what it does not
Happo captures a UI and compares it with an accepted baseline so developers can review visual changes during code review. Its documented workflow is a code push, a CI run, screenshot capture, and baseline comparison. The service also offers an accessibility target.
A behavior test can pass while the UI changes in a way that matters to users: text color, spacing, position, or layout may be different even though buttons and flows still work. Happo’s homepage presents a customer example in which Playwright end-to-end tests passed while Happo detected unwanted text-color and positioning changes. That is a testimonial from Arne Zeising of re:cap hosted by Happo, not an independent study or a guarantee that every visual defect will be caught.
Think of visual regression checks as an additional review signal. They do not establish that a page is functionally correct, and a screenshot difference is not automatically a bug: intentional design changes also need review and baseline updates.

Set up Happo in a React project
1. Install the package
From the project root, add Happo as a development dependency using the package manager your project already uses:

No release number is pinned here; check the package registry for the current version before deciding whether to pin one in your lockfile.
2. Add a root configuration
Create happo.config.ts in the project root. The documented configuration imports defineConfig from happo, supplies API credentials from environment variables, and declares capture targets. This example uses the documented target types and a Chrome desktop viewport:

});Happo also recognizes happo.config.js, .mjs, .cjs, .ts, .mts, and .cts filenames with the happo.config. prefix. The repository documents target settings for viewport sizing, maximum dimensions, color-scheme preferences, and silencing animations. Supported desktop target types listed there are chrome, firefox, edge, safari, and accessibility; it also lists ios-safari and ipad-safari. Animated APNG capture is described as experimental and unsupported on iOS Safari and iPad Safari.

3. Provide credentials without committing them
Set HAPPO_API_KEY and HAPPO_API_SECRET in your local environment for local runs. For CI, add them through the CI provider’s secret mechanism and make them available to the job running Happo. Do not commit real credentials to the repository. The reviewed README does not specify provider-specific UI steps, so use the documentation for your CI system to configure secret variables.
4. Run the suite
With the config and credentials in place, run:
npx happoThe CLI discovers the configuration and runs the visual regression test suite. Use the resulting comparison to decide whether a difference is an unintended regression or an expected change that should become the new baseline.
Choose Storybook or Playwright based on your existing coverage
Storybook: capture a component inventory
If the team already maintains Storybook stories, Happo’s Storybook integration can use those stories as a component-focused capture inventory. This is useful for reviewing reusable UI across stories, including responsive or browser differences. Happo describes automated story capture and review links in pull requests on its Storybook integration page.
Playwright: capture selected states in existing tests
If your existing Playwright suite already navigates to the important states, the Happo Playwright integration can inject screenshots for selected UI states into that workflow and run in CI. This suits teams that want visual checks alongside established end-to-end scenarios rather than treating Storybook as the sole inventory.

Do not add both integrations by default
Choose according to the assets and review workflow you already maintain. Compare the routes on these practical questions:
- Are reusable component stories or realistic end-to-end states the better representation of the UI you need covered?
- Which route gives your team useful browser and viewport coverage without duplicating captures?
- How much additional CI time and maintenance can the team support?
- Who will review differences and approve intentional baseline changes?
Happo’s homepage also names Cypress, GitHub Actions, and CircleCI among its integrations. An official announcement dated September 10, 2026 says GitLab support has arrived, but describes it as experimental. Happo notes that long-term production use with real repositories and concurrency patterns had not yet been established; setup may require more wiring than a one-click GitHub App and may require an IP allowlist for self-managed GitLab. Validate that route against your own runner and merge-request flow before relying on it.
Where visual checks fit in CI
A typical workflow is to run Happo after a change is pushed, capture the configured UI states, and expose the comparison for review with the pull request. Keep the baseline decision in the same code-review process as the change: reviewers need to distinguish expected design work from accidental changes, not simply approve every diff.
- Choose the UI inventory: Storybook stories, selected Playwright states, or another documented integration that fits your project.
- Configure only the browser targets and states that matter to the team, then establish the baseline through the team’s review process.
- Add
npx happoto the CI job that runs the visual checks, and supply API credentials through that provider’s secrets facility. - Review the returned comparisons as part of pull-request review; accept a new baseline only when the visual change is intentional.
The cited material establishes the overall CI flow and integrations, but not universal provider-specific YAML, runner sizing, or execution-time guarantees. Follow the current integration instructions for your provider rather than copying a guessed workflow file.

Happo is a documented option for React teams that want hosted visual comparisons and accessibility checks integrated with component stories or existing Playwright states. Its strongest fit is a team that can maintain a meaningful capture inventory and review visual changes deliberately in CI. For Indian teams, confirm commercial terms directly; for GitLab, treat the September 2026 integration as experimental and validate it under your own CI conditions.
