For a straightforward, repeatable URL batch, shot-scraper is the more direct starting point. Playwright gives you more room to program page behavior and connect captures to tests. Neither project’s cited documentation establishes a universal maximum batch size, throughput, or success rate.
Set up a reliable batch before scaling
- Define what each image should show. Choose a viewport capture, a full-page capture, or a selected element. Both tools document full-page capture; shot-scraper includes viewport sizing and selector-based capture controls, while Playwright documents viewport, full-page and element screenshots.
- List the pages and decide how to name outputs. Keep a small, explicit sample first. Check that each destination path is unique and that the images show the intended page state before expanding the list. The tools document configurable capture workflows, but no cited source promises a particular batch size or speed.
- Account for page state. Identify pages that require authentication, a delay, a selector to appear, or a click before capture. shot-scraper documents authentication, waits and interactions. With Playwright, write browser automation code to perform the required navigation and interactions before calling the screenshot API.
- Run a sample in the intended environment. Confirm the browser version, viewport and other capture settings are consistent with the eventual scheduled or CI run. This is especially important if images will be compared over time.
- Automate recurring work in CI if useful. shot-scraper documents a GitHub Actions template and workflows, with recurring screenshot examples. Playwright can be used within a broader automation or test workflow.
Use shot-scraper for a CLI-first capture job
shot-scraper is a good first evaluation when the main job is taking multiple screenshots from a defined set of pages and you prefer a CLI workflow rather than building a custom browser harness. Follow its official installation and multiple-capture instructions at the shot-scraper documentation; those pages cover package and browser setup as well as capture configuration.
Before running a large batch, verify the options your pages actually need: viewport dimensions, full-page or selector-based capture, output format, authentication, waits and interactions. The project documents these capabilities, but this guide does not assume a single command or configuration that works for every version and page set.

For recurring runs, the project also documents a GitHub Actions template and workflow examples. Keep the scheduled job’s browser and host environment consistent if the output is meant for visual comparison.
Use Playwright when screenshots are part of automation or tests
Playwright’s screenshot API is a better fit when a capture depends on custom browser interactions, must be processed in code, or should share a workflow with browser automation. Its documentation describes screenshots of a page viewport, the full page, or an element, and returning image data as a buffer for further processing. When to add visual assertions
Playwright Test can compare screenshots against visual baselines: an initial run creates a reference image, and later runs compare against it. The documentation describes options for allowed pixel differences and custom stylesheets that can filter volatile page elements. This is useful for regression testing, but it is a test-runner workflow—not a prebuilt bulk screenshot CLI. See the visual comparisons documentation.
Keep screenshots comparable across runs
Rendered pages can vary with the browser and host environment, so a changed image does not automatically mean the site changed. For visual baselines, keep the execution environment consistent between the reference and the new run. Where a page contains volatile regions, Playwright Test documents custom stylesheets for filtering them during visual assertions. Avoid comparing captures made with materially different environments or page states as if they were equivalent.

Common issues and practical fixes
- The capture is blank or incomplete: the page may not have finished rendering when the screenshot runs. Configure a suitable wait or wait for a page condition; shot-scraper documents delays and conditions, while Playwright lets your automation wait for the relevant state before capture.
- A page shows a login screen or blocked content: determine whether authentication or an interaction is required. shot-scraper documents authentication and page interaction; with Playwright, include the needed browser steps before capturing.
- Images differ between runs without an obvious site change: check whether the browser, host environment, viewport or page state changed. Use a consistent environment and filter volatile regions where appropriate for Playwright visual assertions.
- The batch produces confusing or overwritten files: review the output naming and settings against the URL list, then test a small sample before running the full set.
