Happo is a hosted visual and accessibility regression-testing service that captures selected interface states, compares them with a baseline, and presents differences for review—often in a CI pull-request workflow. Its main appeal is that teams can connect existing Storybook stories or Playwright and Cypress tests instead of creating an entirely separate test-authoring workflow. It can help catch visual changes, but only in the states and browser targets you capture; a diff is not proof that the interface behaves correctly.

This review describes Happo’s documented setup and capabilities, not the results of a hands-on trial. Plan prices and limits below are those shown on Happo’s pricing page on October 3, 2026, and may change.

What Happo does—and what it does not do

Happo runs screenshots of chosen UI states against saved baselines. A change can be inspected as a side-by-side comparison, a highlighted diff, or a swipe between images. Teams can configure multiple viewport sizes and browser targets, then use the results to decide whether a visual change is expected.

Happo’s integrations are designed to fit existing component and browser-test workflows: configure its Storybook plugin, or add screenshot capture to existing Playwright or Cypress tests. Happo describes its Playwright integration this way: “With Happo, you can keep your existing Playwright suite and capture screenshots for the states that matter most.” That is Happo’s description of its integration, not an independent test result. • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Visual comparison answers a narrower question than functional testing. It can reveal that captured pixels changed; it cannot establish that a button works, an interaction is accessible, or an untested screen is correct. Keep behavioral assertions and human review in the workflow.

How the documented workflow fits into a team’s CI

  1. Choose representative UI states. Select the components, pages, and meaningful states that matter—for example, a populated form as well as its validation state. A state your suite never captures cannot be compared.
  2. Configure targets. Set the relevant viewport sizes and browser targets. The required matrix depends on the browsers and layouts your users need; additional targets and variants also increase snapshot consumption.
  3. Capture and compare. Run Happo through the integration or CLI. It compares the new images against the baseline and makes the differences available in its review interface.
  4. Review the change in context. Inspect the side-by-side, highlighted-diff, or swipe view. Decide whether a difference is an intended design change or a regression, then handle the baseline accordingly.
  5. Use the result in the pull-request loop. Happo documents visual feedback as part of CI and pull-request review. Treat that feedback as an aid to review, not an automatic substitute for code review or functional tests.

Happo’s overview and integration pages describe these workflows: Happo overview, Storybook integration, and Playwright integration.

Setting up Happo from the public repository

The public Happo repository documents installing the package as a development dependency with npm, pnpm, or yarn. The example below illustrates the documented shape: install the package, create a configuration file with credentials and targets, then invoke the CLI. Confirm exact command and configuration details against the current repository before adopting them, because package interfaces can change.

npm install --save-dev happo

For CI, store the API key and secret in environment variables or the CI platform’s secret store rather than committing credentials. A configuration file can read those variables and specify browser targets. The repository sample uses environment variables for the key and secret; consult its current documentation for the exact option names and supported targets.

For Storybook, follow Happo’s plugin configuration path. For Playwright or Cypress, add capture calls to tests that already navigate to and prepare the intended UI state. In each case, ensure the capture runs after the page has reached the state you want to compare; a screenshot taken too early can capture a loading state instead.

Keeping screenshots stable enough to review

Visual tests can produce noise when the rendered page changes for reasons unrelated to the code under review. Happo documents several mitigations, including silencing animations, waiting for fonts and assets, and configuring color-delta tolerance. These controls reduce particular sources of difference; they do not guarantee stable output for every application or environment. Happo Playwright documentation

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
  • Dynamic content: Use stable fixtures or deterministic test data where possible. Timestamps, rotating recommendations, and user-specific content can change pixels between runs.
  • Fonts and asynchronous assets: Wait for fonts and relevant assets to load before capture. A fallback font or late image can alter layout and create a misleading diff.
  • Animation: Silence animations when motion is not part of the state being tested, so the capture is less dependent on timing.
  • Browser and viewport: Keep targets intentional. Browser rendering differences are a reason to test more than one target when required, but expanding the matrix raises snapshot use.
  • Tolerance: Color-delta tolerance can help with small pixel-level variation. Too much tolerance risks overlooking a real visual change, so tune it for the component and review diffs rather than treating it as a universal setting.

No universal flake rate or stability guarantee is established by Happo’s cited documentation. Teams should assess stability in their own fixtures and CI environment.

Estimate snapshot usage before selecting a tier

A practical rough estimate is:

component variants × browser targets × Happo runs per month = snapshots per month

For example, a suite with 40 variants, 2 browsers, and 20 monthly runs would use about 1,600 snapshots, before accounting for any other captured variants or targets. This is an arithmetic planning example, not a Happo benchmark. Your actual count depends on what the integration captures and how often CI runs it.

Choose a plan by coverage and workflow needs

  • Browser matrix: Match the listed browser set to the browsers and devices your project must support. The plan names and coverage above reflect the October 3, 2026 pricing page.
  • Snapshot volume: Estimate variants, targets, and CI frequency; consider whether ordinary commits, reruns, or branch workflows increase usage.
  • Access and support requirements: Check the live plan details for SSO, enterprise support, or other organization requirements rather than assuming they are included.
  • Accessibility workflow: Happo says accessibility testing is included across plans, which may matter if the team wants those checks alongside visual review.

Limitations to weigh before adopting Happo

  • Coverage is only as broad as your captures. Uncaptured states, viewports, and browsers remain outside the visual comparison.
  • A pixel diff is not a functional test. It cannot prove that controls behave correctly or that an interaction meets accessibility requirements.
  • Environment variation can make review noisy. Dynamic content, fonts, animation, asynchronous assets, browser differences, and environment configuration can all affect screenshots.
  • Baselines require deliberate ownership. A changed baseline can represent an approved design update or can hide a regression if reviewers accept it without inspection.
  • GitLab integration maturity deserves date-aware verification. Happo’s GitLab launch post in September 2026 said the integration had not yet received months of validation by a real team using a real repository, real merge requests, and real CI concurrency. That was the maturity caveat at announcement time, not a claim about its current status. If GitLab is central to your workflow, validate your own branch, fork, and CI setup and consult updated documentation. Happo GitLab launch post

ScreenshotNeo: an alternative for screenshot capture

Happo is designed for baseline-based visual and accessibility review. If your immediate need is to capture website screenshots through an API or let an AI agent request screenshots, try ScreenshotNeo first: it removes known consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture, and bills only clean shots. It is a screenshot service, not a replacement for Happo’s documented baseline-review workflow.
