1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf ScreenshotAPI.net returns timeout_error with HTTP 408, first confirm the response code, then adjust the render timeout and page-wait settings to match the site. A longer timeout helps only when the page needs more time to load; it will not fix an unreachable host, TLS failure, quota limit, or service outage.
Confirm you are using ScreenshotAPI.net
This guide is for ScreenshotAPI.net and its v3 screenshot endpoint, https://shot.screenshotapi.net/v3/screenshot. Other services also use the name “Screenshot API,” but their endpoints and parameter names can differ. Do not copy settings from another provider into a ScreenshotAPI.net request. Use your own API token; do not publish it in shared code or logs.
Identify the error before changing settings
Capture both the HTTP status and the error code in the response. ScreenshotAPI.net documents timeout_error as HTTP 408, meaning the request took longer than expected. Its error catalogue lists other failure classes separately, including request aborts, unreachable addresses, refused connections, network or tunnel failures, SSL/TLS problems, rate limits, quota errors, and temporary service errors. See ScreenshotAPI.net’s error reference.
timeout_error/ 408: inspect the target page and the timeout and wait settings.request_aborted: the provider says this can reflect a timeout, network issue, or manual cancellation. Check caller logs and target reachability as well as the API response.- Connectivity or TLS error: validate the URL, redirects, destination availability, TLS configuration, and network accessibility. Raising the render timeout is not a remedy for these conditions.
- 429, quota, or temporary service error: handle the rate limit or account limit, or retry a documented temporary service failure later. Do not treat these as page-load timeouts.
Adjust the timeout and page-wait behavior
ScreenshotAPI.net documents timeout in milliseconds, with a default of 100000 ms. Set a longer value only when the destination has a real reason to need more time. A very low timeout may abort a page before it loads. Also check your own HTTP client, job runner, or reverse proxy: an outer deadline shorter than the API render time can cancel the request regardless of the ScreenshotAPI setting.

| Setting | Documented behavior | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
timeout |
Maximum page-load wait, in milliseconds; default 100000 ms. Documentation examples include 10000 and 60000 ms. | Increase for a page that legitimately needs longer to load, while keeping the value within your caller’s deadline. |
wait_for_event=load |
Default. Waits for the page load, including resources. | Use when resource completeness matters and the page finishes loading normally. |
wait_for_event=domcontentloaded |
Fires after HTML parsing, without waiting for all images, styles, and other resources. | Use when a faster structural capture is acceptable; late assets may be missing. |
wait_for_event=networkidle |
Waits until there are no active network requests for at least 500 ms. | Consider for pages that populate through requests and then settle. Persistent activity can make this a poor fit. |
delay |
Additional pause after the selected page-load event; default 0 ms. | Add a modest pause for late animations, charts, API-driven content, or delayed UI. |
lazy_load=true |
Scrolls the page to trigger deferred or off-screen content; default is false. | Use when a full-page capture misses sections or images that load only as the page is scrolled. |
scroll_delay |
Pause between simulated scroll steps; default 500 ms. Documentation describes 200–500 ms as moderate for many sites. | Adjust only if scroll-triggered content needs time. Large delays on long pages add to render time and can exhaust the timeout. |
These defaults and behaviors are documented by ScreenshotAPI.net in its lazy loading and delay guide; they are not independent performance measurements.
Choose a wait event that fits the page
Keep the default load when you need the page’s resources and the site completes loading within the budget. Choose domcontentloaded when the page structure is enough and waiting for every resource is unnecessary. Try networkidle only when network activity eventually settles: analytics, polling, streaming, or other persistent requests can prevent that condition from being reached.

Add delay only for content that appears after the event
A delay starts after the selected page event. It can give a chart, animation, or delayed interface time to appear, but it does not make an unreachable server reachable. Large delays also increase render time, so avoid applying them to every capture without a page-specific reason.
Enable lazy loading for scroll-triggered content
lazy_load=true addresses a different issue: content that does not load until the page is scrolled. If you also increase scroll_delay, remember that the pauses accumulate over a long page and consume the same overall timeout budget.

Example request for a slow page
Use the provider’s documented endpoint and parameter names. This example requests a longer render budget, waits for network activity to settle, then allows a short delay for late content. Change the target URL and values to match the page; a persistent network connection may make networkidle unsuitable.
curl -G "https://shot.screenshotapi.net/v3/screenshot"
--data-urlencode "token=YOUR_API_KEY"
--data-urlencode "url=https://example.com"
--data-urlencode "timeout=180000"
--data-urlencode "wait_for_event=networkidle"
--data-urlencode "delay=1000"
-o screenshot.png
For a full-page capture with content loaded on scroll, add lazy_load=true and, if needed, set scroll_delay. Keep the token private. Refer to the render documentation for the endpoint and token parameter.

Troubleshoot by symptom
The response is 408 or timeout_error
- Confirm the target URL is correct and publicly reachable.
- Check whether the page is slow because it loads scripts, API data, or other resources. Raise
timeoutif it genuinely needs more time. - Choose a suitable
wait_for_event; use a modestdelayonly if content appears after that event. - Check the outer timeout on your client or job runner. Its deadline must not cancel the request first.
The screenshot is missing below-the-fold images or sections
Enable lazy_load=true to trigger content that loads on scroll. If sections still appear too early in the capture, tune scroll_delay cautiously; long pages and large per-step pauses can exceed the render budget.
The page never reaches network idle
If the target keeps making requests, change from networkidle to load or domcontentloaded, depending on whether you need all resources. Add a short delay only if specific late content needs it.

The error is not a timeout
Follow the error category rather than repeatedly increasing timeout. Check URL and destination reachability for address or connection errors, TLS configuration for SSL/TLS errors, account and rate limits for quota-related responses, and retry later only for a temporary service error. The provider’s descriptions for request_aborted include several possible causes, so correlate that response with your client logs and whether the target can be reached.
Or skip the browser setup
If you would rather use a screenshot API than manage your own browser-rendering flow, ScreenshotNeo accepts a URL in one request and returns a screenshot or PDF. Its clean-shot options accept cookie or consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status in headers. ScreenshotNeo also provides an MCP server with screenshot tools for AI agents.
