To remove ad clutter from ScreenshotAPI captures, set block_ads=true; to suppress consent overlays, also set no_cookie_banners=true. Add block_tracking=true only when you specifically want known tracking and analytics requests blocked. These options target different things, are documented as off by default, and can change what the rendered page contains.

Which ScreenshotAPI options block ads, trackers, and overlays?

ScreenshotAPI documents these controls as separate request options. The defaults below are false unless noted; with that default, the corresponding resources are allowed. See the ScreenshotAPI parameter documentation for the current request syntax and details.

Option What it affects When to use it Trade-off
block_ads Requests to common ad networks before rendering. Use true for a cleaner report, presentation, documentation image, or visual comparison. Leave it false when you need ads visible as part of the page. Ad content will not appear, so the result is not a record of the page with ads enabled.
block_tracking Known tracking domains, scripts, and analytics services during rendering. Use true when tracking suppression is part of the capture requirement or you want to avoid tracking-driven variation. Tracking-dependent behavior may not run. Leave it off when reproducing a user environment or testing such behavior.
no_cookie_banners Cookie-consent pop-ups and overlays. Use true when a consent banner covers the content. ScreenshotAPI’s help page recommends combining this with block_ads=true for common banner and ad clutter. The help page says most cookie banners, not every possible implementation, so a site-specific overlay can remain.
block_chat_widgets Chat widget scripts and requests. Use true when a support bubble obscures the part of the page you need. The chat widget will not be present in the capture.
block_js JavaScript execution across the page. Use only for content that does not depend on scripts, such as a suitable static page. ScreenshotAPI warns this can break functionality, hide content, or produce an incomplete render.
block_specific_requests Selected URLs, file paths, or patterns, such as one endpoint, script, or ad domain. Use when a single request causes a problem but other resources should remain available. Patterns and matching behavior matter; check the live parameter docs before relying on a pattern. The docs describe comma-, space-, or newline-separated patterns and an empty-string default.

ScreenshotAPI also documents controls for stylesheets, images, media, fonts, text tracks, Fetch API requests, and EventSource connections. The documented defaults are false. Blocking these resource classes can remove styling, images, media, live data, or dynamic content, so only enable them when those resources are irrelevant to the capture.

Choose the narrowest setting that meets the goal

For a clean screenshot without ad and consent clutter

Start with block_ads=true and no_cookie_banners=true. This follows ScreenshotAPI’s help guidance for captures where ads and consent banners cover the page. It does not guarantee that every overlay is removed.

When tracking itself must be suppressed

Add block_tracking=true if the goal includes blocking known tracking or analytics requests. It is not a substitute for ad blocking or consent-banner handling: each option addresses a different category.

When one resource is the problem

Prefer block_specific_requests for a known endpoint, script URL, or domain when broad controls would remove useful page behavior. Confirm the current pattern syntax in the parameter documentation, then check whether the page still renders the content you need.

When the screenshot must resemble a visitor’s page

Leave blocking options off unless the visitor environment you are modeling would also block those resources. A capture made after suppressing ads, analytics, chat, or JavaScript is a modified rendering environment, not necessarily what every user saw.

Understand what blocking changes

These controls affect requests or overlays before or during rendering. Blocking ads can remove paid placements; blocking trackers can prevent analytics scripts or tracking-dependent behavior; hiding consent banners changes the visible page; and blocking chat removes its widget. Blocking JavaScript can prevent scripts from populating content or enabling interactions. Blocking stylesheets, images, media, fonts, Fetch, or EventSource can remove visual elements or dynamic updates.

ScreenshotAPI’s feature and product pages claim more than 20,000 ad-blocking rules. That is a company claim; the pages do not provide an independently verified measurement or a publication year. It should not be treated as an independent test result.

Troubleshoot incomplete or unexpected captures

  • The page is still covered by a banner: Confirm no_cookie_banners=true is set. The help page describes coverage of most banners, not all implementations; a site-specific overlay may need a targeted approach.
  • Content disappears after enabling blocking: Turn off one option at a time to identify which removed a required request. A blocked script or resource may provide the content rather than merely advertising or tracking.
  • The page is broken with JavaScript disabled: Remove block_js=true unless the page is genuinely static. ScreenshotAPI warns that disabling JavaScript can hide content or leave the render incomplete.
  • A broad block removes too much: Replace a resource-class block with block_specific_requests for the particular URL, path, or pattern, and verify the syntax against the current docs.
  • The screenshot differs from a user’s view: Check whether ads, tracking, consent UI, or chat were intentionally suppressed. Disable the relevant control if fidelity to that environment matters more than a clean analytical image.
