In HTML, put the <img> element inside an <a> element and set the anchor’s href to the destination. The steps depend on where you’re editing the image.
In Microsoft Word
- Select the picture you want to link.
- Choose Insert > Link, or right-click the picture and choose Link.
- Enter the destination in the Address box, then confirm the link. You can also set optional ScreenTip text in the hyperlink dialog.
Word can link to a web address, a file, an email address, or a location within a document. Menu labels and placement can vary by platform and release; see Microsoft Support for the Word instructions.
In Microsoft PowerPoint
- Select the picture you want to make clickable.
- Choose Insert > Link > Insert Link.
- Enter the address of an existing web page and select OK.
PowerPoint can also link to a location in the presentation, a file, or an email address. Its guide covers desktop and mobile platforms, where the workflow and menu presentation may differ. See Microsoft Support.
In Google Docs, Sheets, or Slides
Google’s general instructions for creating a link are to click where the link should go or highlight text, choose Insert > Link, enter a URL or email address, and click Apply. The cited help page covers Docs, Sheets, and Slides but does not specify selecting an image as the link target. If you need to link an image, check the current controls in your specific Google app rather than assuming the text-link steps apply to pictures. See Google Docs Editors Help.

In HTML
Make the image a link by wrapping its <img> element in an anchor. The anchor’s href sets the destination; the image’s src sets the image file.
<a href="https://example.com/">
<img src="photo.jpg" alt="Visit Example's photo gallery">
</a>
Replace the example URL with the page you want visitors to reach and photo.jpg with the image path. When the image is the link’s label, write alt text that describes the destination or action. For example, “Visit Example’s photo gallery” tells a screen-reader user what the link does. Avoid vague alternatives such as “click here.” MDN explains the anchor element and the need for accessible link text when an image is inside an anchor.

If you can’t add the link
- Confirm the picture is selected. In Word and PowerPoint, the documented steps start by selecting the picture itself. If text or another object is selected instead, the link may attach to that object.
- Check the application and platform. The Microsoft instructions cover multiple versions or platforms, and menu names or locations can differ. Look for the link control under Insert or in the object’s right-click menu where documented.
- Don’t assume a universal fix for a disabled control. The documented procedures do not establish one cause or workaround for a greyed-out link option. Check the app’s current help for your version and describe the exact app and platform when seeking support.
- For Google editors, distinguish text links from image links. Google’s general help describes creating links but does not establish the image-specific selection sequence.
