To apply CSS before a Puppeteer screenshot, navigate to the page, wait for the content you need, await page.addStyleTag({ content: css }), then call page.screenshot(). Awaiting the style injection matters: the screenshot should be taken only after Puppeteer has finished inserting the style element.
Inject CSS before capturing the page
This runnable ES module example hides an illustrative cookie-banner selector and captures the full page. Replace the example URL and selector with the ones used by your page.
import puppeteer from 'puppeteer';
const browser = await puppeteer.launch();
try {
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle2' });
await page.addStyleTag({
content: `
body { background: #fff; }
.cookie-banner { display: none !important; }
`,
});
await page.screenshot({ path: 'screenshot.png', fullPage: true });
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
The sequence is navigation and page readiness, CSS injection, then capture. Puppeteer’s Page.addStyleTag() API adds either a <style> element from supplied CSS content or a <link> element from a stylesheet URL. The page-level method targets the main frame. Puppeteer’s screenshot guide demonstrates navigation followed by capture.
Choose a readiness condition for the page
The example uses networkidle2, as in Puppeteer’s screenshot guide, but that is not a universal readiness rule. A page may keep network requests active, or render important content after navigation completes. Select a wait condition and any additional application-specific readiness checks according to what must be visible in the screenshot.

If the target content appears only after a particular UI state or element is available, wait for that state before injecting CSS. This avoids capturing a page before the content or element you intend to style exists.

Choose page capture or element capture
| Capture | Use when | How to capture |
|---|---|---|
| Whole page | You need the page rather than one selected element. Consider whether the capture should extend beyond the viewport or use a defined clip. | page.screenshot(options) |
| One element | You need a particular DOM element rather than the surrounding page. | Find the element and call elementHandle.screenshot(options). |
Puppeteer’s Page.screenshot() reference documents options including fullPage, clip, captureBeyondViewport, path, type, and omitBackground. The documented default for fullPage is false; the default image type is PNG. Check the documentation for your installed Puppeteer version when exact option behavior matters: the reference reviewed here showed version 25.12.0.
For an element screenshot, Puppeteer scrolls the element into view if needed. The operation throws if the element has been detached from the DOM, so keep the handle current and ensure the element remains attached at capture time. See ElementHandle.screenshot().

Target the frame that contains the content
page.addStyleTag() is a shortcut for adding the style to the main frame. If the element you need to change lives inside a child frame, inject the CSS into that frame instead; main-frame CSS injection does not automatically target content in a child frame. The Frame.addStyleTag() API provides the corresponding frame-level method.
Troubleshoot common capture problems
- The screenshot still shows the original styling: Confirm that the CSS selector matches the live page and that the
await page.addStyleTag(...)call completes before capture. - The target is inside an iframe: Use the frame containing that content rather than injecting into the main frame.
- An element screenshot fails: The element handle may have become detached. Locate the element again after page updates and capture while it remains in the DOM.
- Content is missing or incomplete: Revisit the page-specific readiness condition. Navigation completion alone may not mean the application has rendered the required content.
- The screenshot only covers the visible area: Set
fullPage: truewhen you need a full-page capture, or useclipwhen you need a specific region.
Or skip the browser setup
