If streaming apps on your phone will not cast, keep buffering, or refuse to play offline, start by checking the app’s support for your device and the connection between your phone and TV. Update the app and phone software before trying a reset; some resets erase downloads and sign you out.
Set up streaming on your phone or tablet
- Install the streaming service’s official app, update it, and sign in.
- For viewing on a TV, check whether the TV has the service’s own app. If it does, installing that app may be simpler than casting from your phone.
- If you want to cast, check that the service supports the TV or streaming receiver’s casting method. Turn on the receiver and connect the phone and receiver to the same Wi-Fi network when the service’s instructions require it.
- Open the video in the service app and use its cast control if available. Casting sends supported playback to a receiver; screen mirroring sends or duplicates the phone’s display, and a service may support one route but not the other.
Compatibility depends on the service, receiver, phone, and software version. For example, Netflix says casting from iPhone or iPad requires iOS or iPadOS 16 or later, and its cast-icon guidance says Android 9 or later. These are Netflix requirements, not universal minimums. Check Netflix’s casting guidance and the relevant app’s current instructions.
Why can’t I cast from my phone to my TV?
A missing cast icon or receiver does not by itself mean the phone is broken. The app may not support that receiver, the device or operating system may not meet the app’s requirements, the receiver may be off, or network and permission settings may prevent discovery.
- Confirm the TV or streaming device is powered on and ready to receive.
- Check whether the streaming service supports casting to that device. Some TVs have the app but do not act as a casting receiver.
- Verify the phone and receiver are connected to the expected Wi-Fi network; Google Cast and Disney+ troubleshooting both direct users to check network setup.
- On iPhone or iPad, review the app’s Local Network permission in Settings if the app needs it to find devices.
- Check the app and phone’s OS version against the service’s requirements, then update if needed.
Netflix’s casting help and no-devices-found troubleshooting describe service-specific checks. If you use Netflix, be cautious about resetting the app: Netflix says the reset deletes saved downloads and signs you out.

When casting is unsupported
Try the TV’s native app if available, or use a receiver the service supports. A Chromecast-compatible device is one possible option when the TV cannot run the app or receive its cast, but check the current device and service compatibility before buying hardware. Disney+ documents Chromecast and AirPlay options; support varies by service and region.
Why does streaming buffer or say there is no connection?
Buffering can result from a weak or unstable connection or from a device that needs an update. Netflix warns that cellular data, mobile hotspots, and satellite connections may be too slow for playback. Disney+ notes that a no-internet error can appear when the device is not connected to Wi-Fi or cellular data.

- Check that the phone is actually online by opening another app or webpage.
- If you are on cellular, a hotspot, or satellite service, try a more stable Wi-Fi connection if one is available.
- Close and reopen the streaming app, then check for app and operating-system updates.
- If other devices also have connection problems, contact your internet provider or check its service status.
See Netflix’s buffering guidance and Disney+ connection help. These sources do not establish one universal minimum internet speed, so a single speed threshold would not be reliable for every app, video quality, and network.
Can I watch shows offline?
Some services let subscribers download eligible titles in their mobile apps, but availability depends on the service, plan, device, and title. Disney+ says subscribers with eligible plans can download supported content on supported mobile devices for viewing without an internet connection. Does Netflix work with AirPlay or screen mirroring?
Not every service supports the same route. Netflix says AirPlay is not supported on iPhone or iPad; its help information discusses supported casting, wired adapters, and wireless mirroring separately. Disney+ documents Chromecast or AirPlay for supported mobile devices. Consult the current help page for your service and distinguish an in-app cast control from mirroring the entire screen.

Should I update the app or phone?
Yes. Check both when playback or casting fails, but use steps for your specific app and device rather than assuming one menu path works everywhere. Hulu’s update guidance gives device-specific instructions, and Netflix’s Chromecast troubleshooting includes Android software compatibility checks. Menu labels and minimum versions can change, so consult the service’s current support page for your device.
