Use an explicit absolute PNG path in a directory the Selenium process can traverse and write to, then check the result of save_screenshot. On Linux, a permission error can involve the existing file, the directory where a new file would be created, or any directory along the path—not just the screenshot itself.
1. Save to an explicit path and check the result
Selenium writes the PNG to the filename your script supplies. A relative path is resolved from the process’s current working directory, which may differ between a terminal, IDE, service, container, or CI runner. Use an absolute path while diagnosing:
from pathlib import Path
from selenium import webdriver
output = Path("/tmp/selenium-output/page.png")
output.parent.mkdir(parents=True, exist_ok=True)
driver = webdriver.Chrome()
try:
driver.get("https://example.com")
saved = driver.save_screenshot(str(output))
if not saved:
raise OSError(f"Selenium could not save the screenshot to {output}")
print(f"Saved screenshot: {output}")
finally:
driver.quit()
Replace the example URL and browser setup with your test’s values. The important parts are the full filename, ensuring its parent directory exists, and checking the Boolean return value. Selenium’s Python API documents that save_screenshot returns false on an I/O error and recommends full paths.
2. Find which Linux permission check is failing
Linux can deny a write for different reasons, so first establish whether the PNG already exists and identify the user running the test. Inspect from the same runtime environment that launches Selenium; the host’s permissions may not describe a container or CI worker’s mounted output directory.

If the destination file already exists
The Selenium process needs write access to that file. Check its owner, group, and permissions, and compare them with the effective user and groups of the test process. Correct ownership or grant the necessary access to that file if appropriate.
If the destination file does not exist
The process needs write permission on the parent directory to create it. Create the intended directory during test setup if necessary, then check that the runtime user can write there.

Check every directory in the path
Linux requires search (execute) permission on every directory in the path prefix. A writable destination directory does not help if the process cannot traverse an earlier directory. Check the full path from its root to the output directory, as well as the file or parent-directory write permission relevant to whether the file exists.
Use a narrow permission correction
Adjust the owner, group, or access on the particular file or output directory to match the user that runs the test. There is no universal permission command: the right correction depends on the path, runtime identity, and whether the file already exists. Avoid blanket recursive chmod 777; it grants broader access than this diagnosis establishes as necessary.

3. Distinguish screenshot capture from saving the file
Selenium’s file-saving method obtains PNG data and writes it to the requested filename. Its API reports an I/O failure as False. To determine whether the browser produced screenshot data independently of the local path write, retrieve the bytes first and then try writing them to the intended destination:
png = driver.get_screenshot_as_png()
output.write_bytes(png)
If obtaining the bytes succeeds but write_bytes fails, focus on local path access, directory traversal, and the process identity rather than browser capture. Selenium also provides base64 screenshot data through its screenshot API.

4. Check permissions that affect later readers
If the screenshot is created but another process cannot read it, inspect how the file’s creation permissions were determined. The process’s umask removes permission bits from newly created files, and a default ACL on the parent directory can also affect creation permissions. These are relevant to downstream readability; they are not by themselves proof of the cause of an initial write failure.
5. Troubleshooting by symptom
| Symptom | What to check | Next action |
|---|---|---|
save_screenshot returns False |
Absolute target path, existing-file write permission or parent-directory write permission, and search permission on each path directory. | Test a known writable absolute path under the same runtime user, then compare it with the failing path. |
| The path works in a shell but fails in an IDE, service, container, or CI job | The process identity, working directory, and—if applicable—the output directory as mounted inside that runtime. | Inspect access from the environment that actually launches the test; do not assume host-side permissions carry over. |
| The output directory is writable but saving still fails | Search permission on every directory above it, and write access to the PNG if it already exists. | Check each path component and determine whether the destination file exists. |
| The file is created but a later step cannot read it | Creation mode, umask, parent-directory default ACL, and the later process’s access. |
Adjust the creation permissions or access controls narrowly for the intended reader. |
| Screenshot bytes are available, but saving to the target fails | Local filesystem access rather than whether the browser produced image data. | Correct the destination path or permissions for the Selenium process. |
6. Or skip the browser setup
If your goal is to obtain a website screenshot rather than run a Selenium browser test, ScreenshotNeo provides a screenshot API and MCP server. A single GET request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Its clean-shot steps accept cookie or consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status in headers. AI agents can use its MCP server tools, including take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf.
For example, save a screenshot of a page with cURL:
