If you want an open-source alternative to Argos CI, start with Playwright Test when your team already uses Playwright: its built-in screenshot assertions keep visual checks alongside browser tests and store reference images with your code. Choose BackstopJS for a dedicated scenario runner and visual approval report, while noting its repository says it needs a new maintainer or owner. Choose reg-suit if screenshot capture is already handled and you want a modular comparison, report, storage, and notification layer.
The best fit depends less on a feature checklist than on who will own screenshot capture, baseline updates, rendering consistency, and review. This guide compares those responsibilities so you can choose a workflow your team can maintain.
What to compare when replacing Argos CI
Visual regression tools differ in where they begin and how much workflow they provide. Before switching, decide who will capture images, keep reference baselines, review differences, and operate any storage or notification integrations.
- Capture layer: Does the tool take screenshots, or does it compare images your tests already create?
- Framework fit: Does it fit your existing browser tests, components, or other capture setup?
- Baseline handling: Are expected images committed with code, approved through a separate workflow, or stored outside the repository?
- Review: Is there a visual report and approval process, or will your team build and maintain one?
- Rendering consistency: Can local and CI runs use the same browser and operating-system environment as the baseline run?
- Ownership and governance: Who maintains the runner, plugins, storage, and access controls? For hosted services, verify current prices, data handling, access controls, and terms directly with each vendor.

Playwright Test: the natural choice for Playwright teams
Playwright Test documents the toHaveScreenshot() assertion. On its initial run, it generates a reference image; later runs compare the current screenshot against that reference. The guide recommends committing screenshot files and reviewing them, and provides a snapshot-update flag for updating baselines. It also supports snapshots of text and arbitrary binary data. See the Playwright visual comparisons guide for current syntax and options.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Minimal runnable example
In a Playwright Test project, add a test such as this, using a page route that your test server serves:
import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('home page visual baseline', async ({ page }) => {
await page.goto('http://127.0.0.1:3000/');
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('home.png');
});
Run the test normally to create a reference on its first run and compare against it on subsequent runs. Review generated or changed snapshots before committing. Use Playwright’s documented snapshot-update flag when you intentionally accept a visual change; do not treat an update as proof that the change is correct.
Control rendering before trusting a diff
Playwright warns that output can vary with operating system, browser version, browser settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. It recommends running tests in the same environment that generated the reference images. For reliable CI comparisons, pin and reuse the relevant browser and operating-system environment rather than mixing developer-machine baselines with differently rendered CI images.

Trade-off
This route keeps visual checks close to existing Playwright tests, but the team owns baseline review and must manage environment consistency. It is not a separate managed approval service.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteBackstopJS: scenario configuration and a visual approval report
BackstopJS describes a workflow where you define URLs, screen sizes, selectors, and interactions, run tests against reference screenshots, inspect differences in an in-browser report, and approve expected changes. Its repository lists Docker rendering, CI and source-control integration, and Playwright or Puppeteer interaction scripts. Review the BackstopJS repository for its configuration and current project information.
When it fits
Consider BackstopJS if you want a dedicated self-managed scenario runner with an included report and approval step, rather than adding screenshot assertions directly to an existing Playwright Test suite.

Maintenance consideration
The repository currently includes a notice that BackstopJS needs a new maintainer or owner. Treat that as the project’s own stated maintenance status, not as evidence of release frequency or support quality. Before adopting it for a critical workflow, decide whether your team can own the runner and review process and assess the implications of the repository’s notice.
reg-suit: comparison and publishing for screenshots you already make
reg-suit is a command-line image comparison tool: your workflow supplies the images, and it produces an HTML difference report. Its plugin system can publish snapshots to external storage, including Amazon S3 or Google Cloud Storage, and support snapshot-key generation and notifications such as GitHub or GitLab updates. Consult the reg-suit repository for the project documentation and plugins.

What your team still has to provide
reg-suit does not replace the capture setup: you select and run it, supply the images, choose plugins, and operate the associated storage and integrations. That flexibility can be useful, but it means more workflow ownership than a tool that bundles capture and review.
Hosted services: verify the current offer directly
Percy, Chromatic, and Applitools are hosted visual-testing services in this comparison landscape. Argos’s vendor-authored article compares those services and discusses capture and workflow, but it is category framing from a competitor rather than independent product testing. See Argos’s comparison, then check each vendor’s official documentation and pricing before deciding. Current prices, exact features, framework support, service terms, and data practices are not established here, so no hosted service is ranked as a winner.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.How to choose
- Already use Playwright Test? Try its screenshot assertions first if committed references and team-reviewed baseline updates suit your workflow.
- Need a scenario runner with a visual approval report? Evaluate BackstopJS, and explicitly account for the maintainer notice in your adoption decision.
- Already capture screenshots elsewhere? Evaluate reg-suit for comparison, HTML reporting, and plugin-based publishing and notifications.
- Want a managed hosted workflow? Compare vendors using their current official documentation, pricing, terms, and framework support rather than relying only on a competitor’s overview.
- Run a representative trial. Test the same pages, viewport sizes, and CI environment you intend to use in production; measure how baseline changes are reviewed and how the workflow fits your team’s ownership capacity.
Or skip the browser setup
If your immediate need is to capture website screenshots rather than maintain visual-regression baselines, ScreenshotNeo is a screenshot API and MCP server for developers. One GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Cookie banners are accepted and removed along with 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; those cleanup steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status. AI agents can use its MCP server tools to take screenshots, get page information, and capture PDFs.
For a WebP screenshot, replace the example target URL with your own. Keep the API key private; see the ScreenshotNeo documentation for request parameters and response details.
