Its documentation defines token_required as a missing authentication token, while subscription_inactive is a separate 401. Confirm that your request sends the current Dashboard key in the token parameter; if you rolled the key, update every integration still using the old one.
1. Read the error identifier, not just the 401 status
A 401 does not by itself prove that the key is malformed. ScreenshotAPI.net documents two distinct 401 cases: token_required, which means the authentication token is missing, and subscription_inactive, which indicates an inactive subscription. Check the response body for the identifier and use the official error list to classify it.
| Status and identifier | What it means | What to check |
|---|---|---|
401 token_required |
The authentication token is missing. | Ensure the request includes a non-empty token parameter. |
401 subscription_inactive |
The account subscription is inactive. | Check account and subscription status rather than repeatedly changing the key. |
402 payment_required |
A payment-related restriction. | Resolve the account’s billing issue. |
403 trial_expired |
The trial has expired. | Check the account’s plan or trial status. |
403 or 429 screenshots_limit_reached |
The documented quota or request-rate limit has been reached; the status distinguishes the case. | Check usage limits or requests per minute, as applicable. |
These are separately documented errors, not evidence that the API key itself is invalid. ScreenshotAPI.net’s published error list does not document a distinct invalid-token error code or a detailed invalid-token response body.
2. Verify the token in the request that actually leaves your app
The API key is available from your ScreenshotAPI.net Dashboard. The service’s Getting Started guide shows it supplied as the token request parameter. Compare the request your integration sends with the vendor’s Query Builder output or official example, and check that:

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- The parameter is named
tokenand is included in the request. - Its value is the intended current key, not an empty variable, truncated value, or stale configuration.
- The key belongs to the ScreenshotAPI.net account expected for this integration.
Keep the key secret. Do not paste it into a public issue, screenshot, support ticket, or unredacted log. When comparing requests or sharing diagnostics, replace the key value with a redaction such as [REDACTED].
3. Check whether the key was rolled
In the Dashboard, open Settings and use Roll API Key only when you need to replace the credential. ScreenshotAPI.net says this action issues a fresh key and revokes access from the previous key. Once rolled, update every caller that uses the old key:

- Environment variables and deployed secrets
- Scheduled jobs and scripts
- Automation modules and other integrations
Restart or redeploy the affected services if they only load secrets at startup. Otherwise, an integration can continue sending a revoked key even after you have copied the fresh one into the Dashboard.
4. If the current Dashboard key is still rejected
- Save the HTTP status, exact error identifier and response body.
- Record the endpoint, timestamp and a redacted version of the request.
- Contact ScreenshotAPI.net support with those details. Do not send the API key itself.
