Chrome can save the wrong-sized screenshot because it captured the wrong page area, or because the screenshot’s pixel dimensions differ from the page’s CSS-pixel dimensions. Those are separate issues: first identify whether you need the visible viewport or the entire page, then compare the CSS viewport with the saved image’s pixel dimensions. Device pixel ratio (DPR) and, for scripted captures, emulated device settings can explain a difference in scale.
First identify what “wrong size” means
Check whether the problem is the area shown in the image or the image’s dimensions:
- Wrong page area: the screenshot is too short or omits content below the browser window, or captures more of the page than you wanted.
- Unexpected pixel dimensions: the image contains the right area, but its pixel width or height differs from the CSS viewport you expected.
- Content looks scaled: the captured area is right, but text and other elements look larger or smaller than expected.
Record the intended viewport, the page’s CSS viewport dimensions, and the saved image’s actual width × height. Without the capture method and those measurements, there is no evidence to establish one specific cause on a particular Mac.
Choose the right Chrome screenshot mode
Capture the visible viewport
In Chrome DevTools Device Mode, use the viewport screenshot option when you want only what is currently visible in the emulated viewport. It does not include page content outside that area.

Capture the full page
Use Capture a full size screenshot when you want the whole page, including content beyond the visible viewport. A full-page image will ordinarily be taller than a viewport image; that difference is about captured extent, not necessarily a sizing error. Chrome documents the distinction between viewport and full-size capture in its Device Mode guide.
Check viewport, DPR, and Device Mode zoom
In DevTools Device Mode, check the emulated width and height, device type, and DPR. Chrome defines DPR as “the ratio between physical pixels on the hardware screen and logical (CSS) pixels.” As a result, a screenshot’s raster dimensions need not match the page’s CSS viewport dimensions.

Also distinguish the zoom used to fit the emulated page inside the DevTools window from the emulated viewport size itself. The first changes how the emulation is displayed in the DevTools interface; verify the width and height fields rather than inferring them from how large the preview looks. DPR is device- and setup-dependent, so do not assume every Retina Mac produces an image exactly twice the CSS dimensions.
If a script or automation tool captures the page
Inspect the browser settings used by the script as well as the screenshot call. Chrome DevTools Protocol exposes device-metrics overrides, including width, height, and device scale factor; screenshot capture also accepts a viewport. An override or capture viewport that differs from your intended values can change the emulated page or the captured region. See the protocol’s Page documentation for the relevant parameters.

For diagnosis, compare these three values separately:
- CSS viewport: the page’s logical layout area.
- Screenshot bitmap: the actual saved image width and height in pixels.
- Document dimensions: the full page extent, including content outside the viewport.
If the bitmap has the expected viewport area but not the full document height, you likely selected viewport capture. If the captured area is right but raster dimensions differ from CSS dimensions, check DPR and any device-scale override. This comparison is a troubleshooting method based on Chrome’s documented distinctions, not a diagnosis of a specific Mac.

A practical troubleshooting sequence
- Identify the capture path: ordinary browser capture, DevTools viewport screenshot, DevTools full-size screenshot, or a script using Chrome DevTools Protocol.
- State the mismatch precisely: is the image too tall or wide, does it omit page content, or does the content merely look scaled? Note expected and actual width × height.
- Select the intended extent: use viewport capture for the visible view and full-size capture for the entire document.
- For Device Mode, verify its controls: check width, height, device type, DPR, and the distinction between emulated viewport size and preview zoom.
- For automation, inspect overrides: compare configured width, height, device scale factor, and screenshot viewport against the intended capture.
- Measure the page and file independently: compare CSS viewport dimensions, document dimensions, and saved bitmap dimensions to separate an extent problem from a scale problem.
- If it still differs, collect reproducible details: Chrome version, macOS version, display scaling setting, exact capture steps, and the sample image’s pixel dimensions.
