In Puppeteer v25.12.0, CommandOptions documents one property: timeout, with type number. The official reference does not explain what it times, its units, or its default. Do not assume it behaves like LaunchOptions.timeout, which has a separately documented purpose: limiting how long Puppeteer waits for a browser to start.
What is Puppeteer CommandOptions?
CommandOptions is an interface in Puppeteer’s v25.12.0 API reference. Its property table lists only timeout, typed as number. The description and default are not provided. The reference does not establish the timeout’s unit, which operation it applies to, or its runtime behavior.
See the Puppeteer CommandOptions interface reference. Based on that page, there is no documented basis for adding further properties or assigning a specific meaning to CommandOptions.timeout.
What does CommandOptions.timeout do?
The checked API reference identifies the property but does not say what it times. It also does not specify whether the value is measured in milliseconds, provide a default, or explain whether zero disables a timeout. Those details should not be inferred from another Puppeteer option with the same property name.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
If a method or type in your code refers to CommandOptions, consult that method’s own documentation and the version of Puppeteer you are using for context. The interface page alone is not enough to determine the property’s operational effect.
How CommandOptions.timeout differs from LaunchOptions.timeout
LaunchOptions.timeout is a distinct property passed to puppeteer.launch(). In the v25.12.0 reference, it is the maximum time in milliseconds to wait for the browser to start. Its documented default is 30,000 ms (30 seconds), and 0 disables that launch timeout. These facts apply to LaunchOptions.timeout, not automatically to CommandOptions.timeout.

| Property | What the reference establishes | Default and units |
|---|---|---|
CommandOptions.timeout |
One numeric property is listed; the API page does not identify the operation being timed. | Not stated; units not stated. |
LaunchOptions.timeout |
Maximum wait for the browser to start. | 30,000 milliseconds; 0 disables the timeout. |
For launch behavior, see the Puppeteer LaunchOptions reference. Matching property names do not establish matching semantics.
Using launch options without confusing the two timeouts
PuppeteerNode.launch() accepts optional LaunchOptions and returns a Promise<Browser>. Here is a minimal example using the documented launch timeout:

const browser = await puppeteer.launch({
timeout: 30_000,
});
This sets the browser-startup wait in milliseconds. It does not demonstrate or configure CommandOptions.timeout. The official launch method documentation is at PuppeteerNode.launch().
Browser selection and package requirements
- The standard
puppeteerpackage downloads and uses a specific Chrome version by default. Puppeteer documents its bundled Chrome for Testing build as its compatibility baseline. - With
puppeteer-core, provide eitherexecutablePathorchannelwhen callinglaunch(). - Puppeteer says an external
executablePathis only guaranteed to work with the bundled browser; when using an external executable, the reference advises settingbrowseras well. Use another browser executable at your own risk. - Puppeteer configuration files and environment variables are ignored by
puppeteer-core.
For configuration details, consult the Puppeteer configuration guide.

Troubleshooting timeout confusion
- You need to limit browser startup time: set
LaunchOptions.timeoutin the options passed topuppeteer.launch(). Its documented unit is milliseconds; its documented default is 30,000 ms, and zero disables it. - You found
CommandOptions.timeoutin a type or method signature: do not assume it controls browser startup. The v25.12.0 interface page does not define its operation, units, or default. Check the specific method’s documentation and the installed package version. - Your
puppeteer-corelaunch cannot find a browser: provideexecutablePathorchannelas required by the launch documentation. - An external browser executable behaves unexpectedly: Puppeteer guarantees compatibility only with its bundled browser. Check the executable and browser configuration, and consider using the bundled Chrome for Testing version.
- Configuration settings appear to be ignored: the configuration guide states that configuration files and environment variables are ignored by
puppeteer-core.
Or skip the browser setup
If your goal is to get a website screenshot rather than control a local Puppeteer browser, ScreenshotNeo offers a screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request can return an image or PDF without setting up a browser locally. For example:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. Cookie banners, popups and chat widgets are removed before capture; bot checks, blank pages and failed loads are never billed. Its MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots, and the free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card required; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots. Sign up for free.
