Puppeteer 25.12.0 requires Node.js 22.12 or later. If you use TypeScript, the documented minimum is 5.0.1; when type-checking node_modules, use an ES2022-or-later target. The supported Chrome for Testing targets listed by Puppeteer include Windows x64, macOS x64 and arm64, and Debian/Ubuntu and openSUSE/Fedora Linux on x64 and arm64. Requirements can change between releases, so check the documentation for the version you install.

Runtime and operating-system requirements

The following requirements are from Puppeteer’s official documentation as checked on October 3, 2026, for version 25.12.0. They apply to that release, not automatically to older or future versions.

Component Documented requirement for Puppeteer 25.12.0
Node.js 22.12 or later. See Puppeteer’s system requirements.
TypeScript 5.0.1 or later, if used. Set an ES2022-or-later target when type-checking node_modules. See Puppeteer’s system requirements.
Chrome for Testing platforms Windows x64; macOS x64 and arm64; Debian/Ubuntu Linux x64 and arm64; openSUSE/Fedora Linux x64 and arm64. See Puppeteer’s system requirements.

The platform list is specific: it does not establish support for every operating system, distribution, or architecture. The requirements page does not specify minimum CPU speed, RAM, or free disk space. Linux system packages depend on the distribution and release; use the Chromium package manifests linked from the requirements page rather than treating one command as universal.

What installation downloads—and how much

Installing the puppeteer package normally downloads Chrome for Testing and chrome-headless-shell. Puppeteer’s installation guide gives approximate Chrome for Testing download sizes of 170 MB on macOS, 282 MB on Linux, and 280 MB on Windows. These are download estimates, not total installed disk-space requirements. The default browser cache is $HOME/.cache/puppeteer; the guide says this default has applied since Puppeteer v19.0.0.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Choose the package that matches how you manage browsers

  • puppeteer is the end-user package: it downloads a Chrome build and drives it through puppeteer-core.
  • puppeteer-core does not download Chrome. You manage a compatible browser yourself and provide an executablePath or, where applicable, a channel.

Use the official installation guide for the current npm, Yarn, pnpm, and Bun commands and browser-install options.

Check whether package scripts are allowed

Some package-manager configurations block dependency install scripts. If Puppeteer’s script is blocked, the browser download is skipped and a later launch can fail with a missing-Chrome error. Either allow Puppeteer’s install script in your package manager or install the browser manually with npx puppeteer browsers install, as documented in the installation guide.

Keep Puppeteer and its browser version aligned

Puppeteer documents a browser compatibility mapping for each release. For v25.12.0, the table lists Chrome for Testing 154.0.8037.57 and Firefox 156.0.1. Check the supported browsers table for the version you actually installed instead of assuming that any system Chrome will match. Chrome for Testing is the default Chrome family beginning with Puppeteer 20; stable Firefox support began with Puppeteer 23.

Linux and container requirements

Linux shared libraries

A browser can download successfully but fail at launch if the host image lacks shared libraries or other runtime dependencies. Puppeteer’s troubleshooting guidance names common GTK, NSS, GBM, X11, font, and xdg-utils dependencies, but exact package names vary by distribution and base image. On Debian or Ubuntu, start with the current Chromium package manifests linked by Puppeteer, then use ldd against the Chrome executable to identify missing libraries:

ldd /path/to/chrome | grep not

Use the actual Chrome executable path in your installation. Follow the release-specific advice in Puppeteer’s troubleshooting guide.

Alpine and writable profiles

Chrome does not support Alpine out of the box. Alpine users need to arrange compatible dependencies and validate the image rather than assume a Debian/Ubuntu package list will work. Puppeteer also needs a writable user-data directory; it uses a temporary profile by default, or you can configure userDataDir. See the Linux troubleshooting notes.

Docker option

Puppeteer’s official Docker guide describes an image containing Chrome for Testing, required dependencies, and a preinstalled Puppeteer version. Consult the live guide for current image and runtime instructions; the image’s bundled version should be treated as a versioned environment, not assumed to match a separately installed package.

Browser-management tooling

The @puppeteer/browsers documentation lists a compatible Node runtime requirement and archive extraction tools, including unzip for Chrome on Linux/macOS and tar.exe on Windows. Its CLI can install Chrome dependencies on Debian/Ubuntu, an operation that requires root privileges.

Troubleshooting installation and launch errors

“Could not find Chrome”

  • Likely cause: the package manager blocked Puppeteer’s install script, the browser was not downloaded, or you installed puppeteer-core without managing a browser.
  • Fix: allow the install script or run npx puppeteer browsers install. With puppeteer-core, install a compatible browser yourself and set its executable path or supported channel. Details are in the installation guide.

Chrome does not launch on Linux

  • Likely cause: missing shared libraries, unsupported platform assumptions, or a profile directory that is not writable.
  • Fix: inspect missing dependencies with ldd /path/to/chrome | grep not, install the packages appropriate to your distribution using Chromium’s manifests, and ensure the user-data directory is writable. See the troubleshooting guide.

Alpine container fails while Debian works

  • Likely cause: Chrome is not supported on Alpine out of the box, and its dependencies do not match Debian’s.
  • Fix: use a documented compatible environment, or arrange the required dependencies and validate the Alpine image explicitly. Do not copy a Debian package command and assume it applies.

Browser starts but behaves unexpectedly

  • Likely cause: the browser version differs from the one mapped to your Puppeteer release.
  • Fix: compare the installed browser against the supported browser table and install a compatible version.

Puppeteer’s FAQ addresses the common test-environment problem, “I am having trouble installing / running Puppeteer in my test environment.”
