On a Mac, the simplest Node.js route is Puppeteer: install it, launch its bundled browser, navigate to a page, and call page.screenshot(). The steps below cover viewport, full-page, and element captures, plus install and rendering issues that commonly affect automated screenshots.
Capture a website screenshot with Puppeteer on macOS
These steps use Puppeteer, whose standard puppeteer package downloads a compatible browser during installation. The example uses ES modules and saves a PNG in the project directory.
1. Create a project and install Puppeteer
In Terminal, move to the directory where you want the project, then run:
npm init -y
npm install puppeteerThe current Puppeteer installation guide is version 25.12.0. It says the full package downloads Chrome for Testing and chrome-headless-shell; it lists the macOS Chrome download at approximately 170 MB. 2. Create the capture script
Save this as screenshot.js:

}Because the script uses import, enable ES modules in the project by adding "type": "module" to the top-level of package.json, or use your existing module convention. Run it with:
node screenshot.jsWhen it completes, screenshot.png is saved in the current working directory. Puppeteer’s documented screenshot method is Page.screenshot(); the try/finally wrapper here ensures the browser is closed even if navigation or capture throws an error. Puppeteer screenshot documentation.
Choose the screenshot scope you need
Visible viewport
The example captures the current viewport. Adjust its dimensions before navigation when you need a particular layout:
await page.setViewport({ width: 1440, height: 900 });Place this after newPage() and before goto(). The selected viewport can affect responsive layouts, so set it deliberately when comparing screenshots.

Full scrollable page
For a full-page image in Puppeteer, pass fullPage: true:

One element
Use an element handle when the output should contain only a component, such as a card or chart:

Wait for the page to be ready
The sample uses waitUntil: 'networkidle2', but network quiet does not guarantee that every site has finished rendering meaningful content. Pages may load data, images, or fonts after navigation. For a page with a known target element, wait for it explicitly before taking the screenshot:

await page.screenshot({ path: 'article.png' });Choose a readiness condition appropriate to the page rather than assuming one navigation event works for every site. If a particular font or image matters, verify it is ready before capture; otherwise the screenshot may show fallback fonts or incomplete content.
Puppeteer or Playwright?
Both provide documented Node.js screenshot workflows. Puppeteer is a direct fit when you want its browser automation API and the standard package-managed Chrome setup. Playwright’s screenshot guide demonstrates the sequence with WebKit and says it can also be used with Chromium or Firefox. Choose based on the browser behavior and APIs your project needs, not a blanket claim that one is faster or better on every Mac.

Troubleshoot installation and capture failures
“Could not find Chrome”
Puppeteer’s install guide says package-manager settings or policies that block install scripts can skip browser downloads. Install the browser explicitly, then run the script again:

Using puppeteer-core without a managed browser
puppeteer-core does not download Chrome. It is intended for users who manage the browser themselves or connect to a remote browser, so configure an executable or browser channel explicitly rather than expecting the default package to supply one. Consult Puppeteer’s installation documentation for the configuration appropriate to your setup.
The image is blank or content is missing
- Confirm the page loaded the expected URL and that navigation did not fail.
- Wait for a selector or other page-specific signal when content appears asynchronously.
- Check whether the target requires authentication, user interaction, or access unavailable to the automated browser.
- For lazy-loaded content, a viewport-only capture may not include content below the fold; select full-page capture when appropriate.
Visual screenshots differ between runs or machines
Playwright cautions that screenshot rendering can vary with host operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. For visual baselines, keep the capture environment consistent and review image changes instead of treating every pixel difference as a product defect. Playwright visual comparisons.
