It is not checking a page’s user-agent or identifying the browser from a website. The mapping below reflects the current implementation checked on October 3, 2026; it may differ in other versions.
What Puppeteer means by “browser platform”
The BrowserPlatform value identifies a target operating-system-and-architecture combination for browser binaries. The @puppeteer/browsers package uses it in browser installation workflows to choose a compatible archive. Its install options default the platform to “Auto-detected,” and also allow a caller to specify a platform explicitly. See the Puppeteer browsers API.
This host-side selection is distinct from a website’s view of a running browser. A page’s user-agent string, viewport, and browser-reported details are not what this detector reads. The implementation calls Node’s operating-system APIs directly: detectPlatform.ts on Puppeteer’s mutable main branch.
How the current platform mapping works
The detector combines the OS platform and CPU architecture. On Windows ARM64, it also checks the OS release. The current source maps values as follows:

The source identifies Windows 11 for this logic by release version 10.0.22000 or greater. Its comments note that Windows 11 on ARM supports x64 emulation. The macOS and Linux “other architecture” branches describe the implementation’s fallback; they do not guarantee that every possible architecture is supported by a browser archive.
How to check the values Puppeteer sees
For a platform mismatch, inspect the Node runtime values rather than relying on the computer’s marketing name or a browser user-agent. Run this in the same Node environment where you install Puppeteer:

- Print the platform, architecture, and release: run
node -e "const os=require('node:os'); console.log({platform:os.platform(), arch:os.arch(), release:os.release()})". - Compare the output with the mapping above. On Windows ARM64, pay particular attention to
release; the mapping’s Windows 11 threshold is 10.0.22000. - Check whether installation overrides detection. The install API accepts an explicit platform, so inspect the options passed by your script or build pipeline as well as its default.
- Check browser and launch configuration separately. A chosen platform affects which archive is downloaded; an executable path or release channel can separately determine what Puppeteer launches.
Detection is not the same as choosing the executable to launch
Platform detection helps an installation workflow select a browser download target, but it does not by itself determine the executable for every Puppeteer setup. The standard puppeteer package downloads a compatible Chrome for Testing build and a separate chrome-headless-shell binary. Installation can be configured to skip downloads, while launch configuration can specify an executable path or a Chrome release channel available at a standard system location. Consult the installation guide, configuration interface, and LaunchOptions interface for the applicable settings.
With puppeteer-core, users manage the browser installation and provide an executable path or channel. Therefore, a detected platform, an installed binary, and the executable selected at launch are related but separate parts of the workflow.

What to do if detection or installation fails
- The platform cannot be determined: an unrecognized Node OS platform can produce
undefined. Verify the values reported byos.platform()andos.arch(), and check whether the install workflow accepts an explicit platform. - No download is available for the inferred target: confirm the requested browser build and the detected platform. An explicit platform override may be appropriate if the target is known, but the downloaded archive must still be compatible with the runtime environment.
- Windows ARM64 gets an unexpected target: check
os.release()in the same environment. The current source assigns Windows ARM64 toWIN64only at release 10.0.22000 or later; earlier values map toWIN32. - The downloaded browser is not the one that launches: inspect
executablePathandchannellaunch settings, and determine whether downloads were skipped. A platform override changes the installation target, not necessarily the executable selected at launch. - A mapped platform still fails at runtime: do not treat a fallback mapping as a universal architecture guarantee. Verify that the actual archive and browser binary support the host, and that your launch configuration points to that binary.

Can I force a platform instead of using auto-detection?
The browser installation API allows an explicit platform where its install options accept one. The selected archive must still be compatible with the machine and runtime.
