Puppeteer resolves a browser build ID from three inputs: the browser, the target platform, and a tag or identifier. Its public resolveBuildId(browser, platform, tag) function returns a promise containing the browser-specific build ID. In the package install flow, Puppeteer selects a configured version, its pinned revision, or latest, resolves that selection for the chosen browser and platform, and then installs the resulting build.
What resolveBuildId does
resolveBuildId(browser, platform, tag) resolves a browser selection to the build ID that identifies a binary for download and caching. The result depends on all three arguments; it is not a single global version lookup. The current Puppeteer API documentation identifies version 25.12.0, though the exact mapping can change as browser data maintained by the package changes.
The browser argument specifies which browser to resolve, the platform selects the relevant operating system and architecture, and the tag or identifier says which release or version is wanted. The function returns a promise of a string. Use a tag supported for the particular browser rather than assuming every browser accepts the same selectors.
How Puppeteer chooses a build during package installation
In Puppeteer’s package install flow, the version choice is made in this order:

configuration.version, when configured.- The browser’s pinned value in
PUPPETEER_REVISIONS[browser], when no configured version is selected. latest, when neither earlier selection is present.
Puppeteer passes that selection, along with the selected browser and platform, to resolveBuildId. It then passes the resolved build ID to the installer. When resolution changes the identifier, the installer also retains the original selection as buildIdAlias. This describes the Puppeteer package’s install flow; a consumer of @puppeteer/browsers can instead call resolution and installation directly.
Channel tags versus exact versions
A channel tag is a moving selection: it asks for a channel’s corresponding browser build for the chosen platform. An exact version identifies a particular requested release rather than tracking a channel as releases change. Puppeteer’s package overview demonstrates both forms with chrome@stable and chrome@116.0.5793.0. The available selectors are browser-specific; do not treat the examples as a guarantee that every browser has the same channels or version scheme.

Install a resolved browser build
The package overview gives this CLI example for a channel selection:
npx @puppeteer/browsers install chrome@stable
It also demonstrates requesting an exact version:
npx @puppeteer/browsers install chrome@116.0.5793.0
For direct use of @puppeteer/browsers, the documented sequence is to resolve the selection and provide the resulting ID to install. Installation options require browser, buildId, and cacheDir; platform can be omitted when it should be auto-detected. Build IDs identify binaries and are used for caching. The optional buildIdAlias retains an alias that can support selection in the launch command.

What a build ID does—and does not—guarantee
A resolved build ID tells the installer which browser binary to download and cache for the selected browser and platform. It does not, by itself, promise compatibility with every Puppeteer release. Puppeteer documents a compatibility guarantee for its bundled browser. Launching an alternate browser through executablePath is supported, but is at the user’s risk.
Common resolution and installation problems
- The selected tag is not available for the browser. Tags are not necessarily shared across browsers. Choose a selector documented for that browser, or request a specific version where supported.
- The install targets an unexpected binary. Resolution is platform-specific. Check the browser and platform passed into the resolver, and whether the package selected a configured version, pinned revision, or
latest. - The binary is downloaded but Puppeteer does not behave as expected. A build ID identifies a binary; it does not guarantee compatibility with the Puppeteer version in use. Prefer Puppeteer’s bundled browser when relying on the documented compatibility guarantee.
- The same requested alias and resolved ID differ. This can be expected when a tag resolves to a concrete build. Puppeteer’s package install flow preserves the original value as
buildIdAliaswhen the resolution changes it.
