Its documented options are the optional numeric deltaX and deltaY. To target a particular element, move the pointer over it before calling the method, then check the element’s actual scroll position if you need to verify movement.
What does Puppeteer’s mouse wheel method do?
Puppeteer documents the signature as Mouse.wheel(options?: Readonly<MouseWheelOptions>): Promise<void>. The method dispatches a mousewheel event; it does not return a scroll distance or a result indicating that content moved. Puppeteer’s Mouse.wheel() reference labels its API page version 25.12.0.
A minimal call is:
await page.mouse.wheel({ deltaY: 100 });
In practical use, deltaY supplies vertical wheel input and deltaX supplies horizontal wheel input. The current MouseWheelOptions interface reference lists both as optional numbers but does not document defaults or further property descriptions; do not rely on an assumed default when you need a specific delta.
How do deltaX and deltaY work?
| Option | Type and status | Practical use |
|---|---|---|
deltaX |
Optional number |
Horizontal wheel input. |
deltaY |
Optional number |
Vertical wheel input. |
For example, pass a positive or negative value to express the direction of the wheel input you want to send. The sign is not a reliable way to infer the page’s eventual content movement: page handlers, browser behavior, zoom, and scrollable areas affect the outcome. A delta also does not promise a matching number of pixels of scrolling.

How to send wheel input over an element
The pointer position matters because wheel input is sent at the mouse’s current coordinates. Puppeteer’s documented zoom example first finds an element, moves to the center of its bounding box, then sends a negative vertical delta:
const elem = await page.$('div');
if (!elem) throw new Error('Target element not found');
const box = await elem.boundingBox();
if (!box) throw new Error('Target element has no visible bounding box');
await page.mouse.move(box.x + box.width / 2, box.y + box.height / 2);
await page.mouse.wheel({ deltaY: -100 });
The example demonstrates a call pattern, not a universal scroll-distance mapping. Its negative delta is used for a zoom demonstration; what happens depends on the target page. See Puppeteer’s example.

Puppeteer’s mouse coordinates are main-frame CSS pixels measured from the viewport’s top-left. The Mouse class reference also cautions that these events are synthetic and do not completely reproduce normal user mouse functionality. Consequently, use this method to dispatch automation input, not as proof that a physical wheel or trackpad would produce identical behavior.
How to verify that the page actually scrolled
A wheel event and a scroll event are different. Wheel input can be delivered without scrolling—for example, over content that cannot scroll, or when a page uses wheel input for zoom. Scrolling can also happen without a wheel event, such as through keyboard input, scrollbar dragging, or JavaScript. MDN explains these distinctions in its Element: wheel event reference.

If the question is whether content moved, observe scrollTop or scrollLeft during a scroll event rather than inferring the result from the wheel delta:
const result = await page.evaluate(async () => {
const el = document.querySelector('.scroll-panel');
if (!el) throw new Error('Scroll panel not found');
const before = { top: el.scrollTop, left: el.scrollLeft };
await new Promise(resolve => {
el.addEventListener('scroll', resolve, { once: true });
// Avoid waiting forever if no scroll event occurs.
setTimeout(resolve, 500);
});
return {
before,
after: { top: el.scrollTop, left: el.scrollLeft }
};
});
For a complete check, record the starting position, send the wheel input while the pointer is over the relevant scroll container, and then compare its position after the input. The timeout in this example prevents the page-side wait from hanging when no scroll event occurs; it is not evidence that a scroll must happen within 500 ms.

Why can page.mouse.wheel() fire without scrolling?
- The pointer is over the wrong place. Move it over the intended element or scroll region before sending the wheel input.
- The target cannot scroll in that direction. Check whether the element has overflow content and whether its current
scrollToporscrollLeftis already at a boundary. - The page uses the wheel for another action. A handler may implement zoom or custom behavior rather than ordinary scrolling.
- A handler cancels the event. Canceled wheel events do not produce browser scrolling or zooming. MDN notes that cancelability can vary within a wheel-event sequence across browsers; in some cases only the first event is cancelable. Passive listeners can also affect whether the browser waits for a handler and whether the event is cancelable. See MDN’s wheel-event guidance.
- The expected distance was assumed from the delta. The delta describes input, not a guaranteed number of content pixels. Measure the resulting scroll position instead.
Or skip the browser setup
If the goal is a screenshot rather than testing wheel behavior, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. Its one-request API can capture a page without setting up Puppeteer locally:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for options. Cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets are removed before capture; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed. Frequently Asked Questions
Does page.mouse.wheel() return the amount scrolled?
No. It returns a Promise that resolves when the input method completes; check the target element’s scroll position to determine whether content moved.
