Check the failing method and its options, then verify the browser, selected protocol, Puppeteer version, and official WebDriver BiDi support list. It is a protocol-capability mismatch—not, by itself, evidence that the browser is broken.
What the error means
Puppeteer’s API reference defines UnsupportedOperation as an error thrown when a method is not supported by the currently used protocol. The error class identifies the kind of problem, but does not name the unsupported method or tell you which protocol choice will resolve it. Start with the call site and the complete error and stack trace.
Puppeteer can use Chrome DevTools Protocol (CDP) or WebDriver BiDi. The browser affects the default: Firefox uses WebDriver BiDi by default, while Chrome uses CDP by default because not all CDP features are available through BiDi. Chrome can also be explicitly launched with protocol: 'webDriverBiDi'; doing so can expose a capability gap for code that worked with CDP.
Diagnose the protocol and method
- Capture the failure details. Record the exact method call, its options, the complete error message, and the stack trace. Note whether the failure occurs consistently or only with a particular browser or code path.
- Identify the runtime configuration. Check the browser (Chrome or Firefox), installed Puppeteer version, and selected protocol. Look for an explicit
protocolsetting; if there is none, account for the browser-specific defaults. - Check the support matrix for the exact call. Consult Puppeteer’s official WebDriver BiDi guide, including its “Puppeteer features not supported over WebDriver BiDi” list. Check the particular method and options, not just the method name: a supported operation can still have restrictions on particular parameters.
- Choose a compatible path. If the operation requires CDP, use a compatible browser and CDP where possible, or change the task to an operation supported by the protocol you are using. There is no universal substitute; some APIs are protocol-specific.
- Reduce and report an apparent mismatch. If the installed-version documentation says the exact operation and options are supported, reduce the case to a small reproduction. Include the Puppeteer version, browser, protocol, call, and full stack when reporting it to the Puppeteer project issue tracker.
The BiDi support guide is version-sensitive and may change independently of a package release. Match it to the version installed in your project rather than treating any fixed list as permanent.

Protocol differences that commonly matter
The official BiDi guide lists unsupported features across multiple areas. Examples include some page-emulation methods; CDP-specific APIs such as Page.createCDPSession(); accessibility, coverage, tracing, and screencasting; selected response-body methods; drag-and-drop APIs; network-condition emulation; service-worker controls; and page metrics. This is an orientation, not a complete or permanent list: verify the specific method and options in the support guide for your version.
The practical comparison is the browser/protocol pair, followed by whether the exact operation is supported and whether the task has a supported alternative. A different browser alone is not a guaranteed fix; the protocol and required capability still matter.

Examples from reported compatibility issues
Page.emulateTimezone() with Firefox
A Puppeteer issue opened November 29, 2024, reported Page.emulateTimezone() failing on Firefox with WebDriver BiDi. The recorded error said CDP support was required and the browser did not support CDP. The report used Puppeteer 23.9.0 and Node 20.18.0 on Windows and was closed as “not planned.” It illustrates a protocol mismatch for that reported configuration; it does not establish that every current Firefox and Puppeteer combination behaves identically.
BidiHTTPRequest.postData
An issue opened September 29, 2025, reported UnsupportedOperation from BidiHTTPRequest.postData while using Firefox. The report concerned feature support and documentation, but does not establish the current implementation status or a definitive fix. Check the documentation for your installed version before relying on that historical report.

Common troubleshooting mistakes
- Assuming the browser is broken: the error describes protocol support. First establish which method is unsupported under the active protocol.
- Changing browsers without checking the protocol: Firefox and Chrome have different defaults, and Chrome can be explicitly configured for BiDi. Confirm the actual runtime selection.
- Checking only the method name: verify the options too; support can be restricted to particular parameters.
- Treating an old issue as a current guarantee: issue reports apply to their recorded configuration and version. Recheck current documentation and reproduce with your installed package.
- Expecting a universal fallback: some operations depend on protocol-specific APIs and have no direct equivalent. Choose a supported approach for the task rather than assuming a one-for-one replacement exists.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does UnsupportedOperation mean Puppeteer is outdated?
Not necessarily. First compare the operation with the support documentation for the version you have installed; the error itself points to protocol support, not package age.
Can I make Firefox use CDP to avoid the error?
The documented default for Firefox is WebDriver BiDi. The cited guidance does not establish a universal Firefox-to-CDP switch, so do not assume changing a launch setting will provide CDP support there.
