A Puppeteer timeout tells you that a particular operation did not finish within its allowed time; it does not, by itself, explain why. Find the rejecting call first, then check whether its target, expected completion condition, timeout scope, or browser environment is wrong. Increase the timeout only when the operation is valid and genuinely needs more time.
Identify which Puppeteer operation timed out
Start with the error stack and locate the call that rejected. Puppeteer’s TimeoutError applies to more than navigation: its API documentation gives page.waitForSelector() and puppeteer.launch() as examples. A selector wait, a navigation wait, and browser startup have different causes and timeout settings.
- Browser startup: The failure occurs at or around
puppeteer.launch(). Check the configured browser executable, installation, permissions, and runtime resources. - Navigation: The failure occurs in
page.goto(),page.waitForNavigation(), or another navigation method. Check the URL, whether navigation was expected, and the selectedwaitUntilcondition. - Element wait or action: The failure concerns a selector or locator. Check the selector, frame context, visibility, and whether the application can reach the state your code expects.
- Other explicit wait: Identify the predicate, response, request, or network-idle state being awaited. Confirm that it can become true in the current page state.
Record the method, its target (such as a URL or selector), and the timeout actually in effect. This prevents changing a navigation setting to address a browser-launch delay—or raising a timeout when the awaited condition is impossible.
Understand Puppeteer’s timeout scopes
The current Puppeteer API references, version 25.x (including references around 25.12.0), document a default of 30,000 milliseconds for common waits. A per-operation timeout can override that value. The page-wide and navigation-specific defaults are separate:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
page.setDefaultTimeout(ms)sets the default for page wait APIs generally.page.setDefaultNavigationTimeout(ms)sets the default forgoto,reload,setContent,waitForNavigation,goBack, andgoForward.puppeteer.launch({ timeout })controls how long Puppeteer waits for the browser to start. The documented default is also30,000milliseconds, but this is a launch option, not a page wait setting.
Prefer a per-call timeout for an exceptional slow operation. Change a page default only when a broader policy is intentional. The following are illustrative patterns; use options supported by your installed Puppeteer version:
const response = await page.goto(url, {
waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded',
timeout: 45_000,
});
page.setDefaultTimeout(20_000);
page.setDefaultNavigationTimeout(45_000);
await page.waitForSelector('#ready', { timeout: 10_000 });
Setting timeout: 0 disables that timeout; it does not make a wait succeed. If the condition never occurs, the script can remain stuck indefinitely. Use zero only when an unbounded wait is deliberate and another reliable mechanism controls the job.
Choose a completion condition that matches the next step
For navigation, Puppeteer’s default waitUntil condition is load. Other documented lifecycle choices include domcontentloaded, networkidle0, and networkidle2. Pick the least strict condition that still makes the next action safe:

- Use
domcontentloadedwhen the next step needs the parsed document but not every dependent resource. - Use
loadwhen the next step depends on the page’s load event and its resources. - Use network-idle conditions only when network quiet is meaningful for the page. A page with continuing or long-lived requests may not reach that state.
- When the application has a clear ready state, wait for a meaningful selector or JavaScript predicate instead of assuming that a lifecycle event means the interface is ready.
page.waitForNetworkIdle() waits for network activity to become idle; its documented default idle period is 500 milliseconds. These are API configuration values in the current documentation, not performance benchmarks or guarantees about how quickly a page should load.
Diagnose a selector or locator timeout
First check whether the selector is correct for the page state at the moment the wait runs. Then inspect the page in a visible browser: verify that the element exists, is in the expected frame, and has reached the state your next action requires. An element inside an iframe is not found by querying the main frame as if it were part of the main document.
Puppeteer locators wait for element presence and action preconditions, use the page timeout by default, and support a per-locator timeout. They can make actions more resilient to ordinary rendering delays, but they cannot fix a misspelled selector, the wrong frame, or a state that never occurs.

const locator = page.locator('#submit');
await locator.setTimeout(15_000).click();
If the page seems to stop progressing, inspect console messages and relevant request or response activity. Puppeteer’s debugging guidance recommends making behavior easier to observe with headful mode and slowMo:
const browser = await puppeteer.launch({
headless: false,
slowMo: 100,
});
These techniques help expose behavior in the client code, network, Web APIs, or browser; they do not establish in advance which one is responsible. Check HTTP response status separately from a timeout: a response with an error status is not the same diagnosis as a wait that expired. The Page API also documents a headless-shell caveat involving navigation responses with valid HTTP status codes, so account for the browser mode when interpreting response behavior.

Puppeteer is only guaranteed to work with its bundled browser. Using an alternate executable is possible in relevant configurations, but compatibility is not guaranteed. Do not treat disabling the sandbox as a routine timeout fix: Puppeteer’s troubleshooting guidance discourages running without a sandbox and recommends configuring one where possible.
Google Cloud Run example
Puppeteer’s troubleshooting guide describes a specific Cloud Run failure mode: CPU may be disabled after an HTTP response is written, so launching Puppeteer in background work after responding can appear very slow. Depending on the service design, keep CPU available for that work or launch the browser before sending the response. This documented scenario should not be generalized to every cloud platform or launch timeout.

| Symptom | What to check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
waitForSelector expires |
Selector spelling, current page state, frame, and expected visibility or action state. | Correct the target or wait for the actual prerequisite; raise that call’s timeout only if the valid state is simply slower than expected. |
goto or another navigation call expires |
Target URL, whether navigation occurs, the waitUntil event, and the navigation timeout setting. |
Use the least strict lifecycle condition that makes the next step safe, or wait for a page-specific readiness signal. |
| Network-idle wait expires | Whether the page keeps requests open or creates ongoing network activity. | Use a selector or predicate tied to the needed application state if network quiet is not a valid readiness signal. |
puppeteer.launch() expires |
Browser download, executable and cache paths, permissions, platform dependencies, sandbox, and runtime resources. | Resolve the installation or environment issue first; change the launch timeout only if startup legitimately needs longer. |
| Timeout appears only in a deployment | Differences in CPU availability, permissions, browser dependencies, and process lifecycle. | Follow the deployment platform’s constraints; do not assume a local timeout adjustment will solve an environment problem. |
Or skip the browser setup
If your goal is to capture a website rather than run a full Puppeteer workflow, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. It can return a screenshot or PDF from one GET request, avoiding local browser installation and launch setup for that capture. It is not a general replacement for Puppeteer when you need arbitrary browser automation.
