Set a timeout in milliseconds in the individual wait call when only that operation needs a different limit. Use page.setDefaultTimeout(ms) for the page’s general timeout, page.setDefaultNavigationTimeout(ms) for navigation methods, or locator.setTimeout(ms) for locator actions. Puppeteer’s current WaitForOptions reference documents a default of 30,000 ms (30 seconds); a timeout of 0 disables the timeout for the documented option.
Set a timeout for one wait operation
Pass timeout in that wait method’s options. The value is milliseconds, so 10_000 means 10 seconds. For example:
await page.waitForSelector('.result', { timeout: 10_000 });
This overrides the timeout for this call without changing the page’s general default. The official Puppeteer WaitForOptions reference documents a default of 30,000 ms (30 seconds) and says 0 disables the timeout. The example value is illustrative; choose a duration appropriate to the page and environment.
Choose the right timeout scope
One operation: options.timeout
Use the option on a wait such as waitForSelector() when one condition needs a different limit from the usual default. This keeps the change local and avoids affecting other operations.

Navigation default: setDefaultNavigationTimeout()
Use a navigation-specific default when the adjustment is for navigation rather than general waits:
page.setDefaultNavigationTimeout(20_000);
Puppeteer documents this setting for goBack, goForward, goto, reload, setContent, and waitForNavigation. See the Page.setDefaultNavigationTimeout() reference.

Locator actions: locator.setTimeout()
For locator actions, set the timeout on a locator. This returns a cloned locator with the specified total timeout; its default comes from Page.getDefaultTimeout():
const button = page.locator('button.submit').setTimeout(10_000);
await button.click();
A value of 0 disables the locator timeout. Details are in the Locator.setTimeout() reference.

Wait for a selector, including visibility or disappearance
waitForSelector(selector, options) resolves when the selector satisfies the requested condition. If it does not appear before the timeout, Puppeteer throws. The method’s options include timeout, visible, hidden, and an abort signal; the wait works across navigations. See the Page.waitForSelector() reference.
// Wait for an element to appear and be visible.
await page.waitForSelector('.result', {
visible: true,
timeout: 10_000,
});
// Wait for an element to disappear.
await page.waitForSelector('.loading', {
hidden: true,
timeout: 10_000,
});
When waiting with hidden: true, the promise can resolve to null if the selector is not found. That is a successful hidden/not-found outcome, not the same as an appearance wait timing out.

Wait for navigation triggered by a click
Register the navigation wait before performing the click. If the click starts navigation, waiting only afterward can miss the event. Puppeteer’s documented pattern uses Promise.all():
const [response] = await Promise.all([
page.waitForNavigation({ timeout: 20_000 }),
page.click('a.next'),
]);
The timeout applies to the navigation wait, and the sample duration is illustrative. See the Page.waitForNavigation() reference.
Handle timeout failures without hiding the cause
- A selector wait throws: Confirm the selector matches the page’s actual DOM and that the element is expected to appear. A larger timeout only allows more time; it does not correct a wrong selector or a page that never reaches the expected state.
- Navigation times out: Check that the action really causes navigation and that the wait is registered before the action. For navigation methods, set the navigation default or pass a per-call timeout where supported.
- A locator action times out: Check the locator’s target and the condition the action requires. Adjust that locator’s timeout if this action reasonably needs longer, rather than changing every page operation.
- The script waits indefinitely: Check for a
0timeout. On the documented wait option and locator method, zero disables the timeout, so use it only when indefinite waiting is intentional.
Or skip the browser setup
If your goal is to capture a website rather than automate a browser interaction, ScreenshotNeo provides a screenshot API. Its one-call GET request can return an image or PDF:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. It removes cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are not billed. Its MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card, and paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use one timeout setting for all Puppeteer operations?
No. Choose the setting by scope: a wait’s options, the page default, the navigation default, or a locator’s timeout.
What unit does Puppeteer use for timeout values?
Milliseconds. For example, 10,000 ms is 10 seconds.
