If you installed the puppeteer package and its browser download completed, you usually do not need to find Chrome: Puppeteer manages a compatible browser for you. Use an explicit path when you manage the browser yourself, or fix the browser installation or cache configuration if the managed browser is missing.
What Puppeteer’s executablePath does
executablePath is an option passed to puppeteer.launch(). It overrides Puppeteer’s default browser location and points to the executable you want to launch. For example:
const browser = await puppeteer.launch({
executablePath: '/path/to/Chrome',
});
/path/to/Chrome is a placeholder, not a universal location. The actual path depends on the operating system, installation method, and deployment environment. Puppeteer documents that it is only guaranteed to work with its bundled browser, so using a separately installed Chrome is a compatibility choice. See the Puppeteer LaunchOptions API.
First check whether Puppeteer already installed Chrome
The puppeteer package downloads Chrome for Testing and a chrome-headless-shell binary during installation. For Puppeteer v19.0.0 and later, the documented default browser cache is $HOME/.cache/puppeteer. The exact browser and paths depend on the installed package version and environment; see the installation guide.

- Check whether your project depends on
puppeteerorpuppeteer-core. - If it uses
puppeteer, check that the install-time browser download completed and that the expected cache is present. - If the browser is missing, install it with
npx puppeteer browsers install. - If your package manager blocks dependency install scripts, configure it to permit Puppeteer’s install script or run the browser installation command after installing the package.
The error Could not find Chrome (ver. ...) can indicate that Puppeteer cannot find its expected downloaded browser. It does not, by itself, prove that an arbitrary system Chrome path is correct or incorrect.
Choose managed Chrome or an explicit system browser
| Approach | Who manages the browser | How Puppeteer selects it | Compatibility consideration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Puppeteer-managed browser | Puppeteer’s installation process downloads the browser. | Normally use puppeteer.launch() without an executable override. |
This is the browser selection covered by Puppeteer’s compatibility guarantee. |
| System or externally managed Chrome | You or your deployment manage installation and updates. | Pass its actual path with executablePath, or use channel where Chrome is installed in a standard location. |
Puppeteer does not guarantee compatibility with a non-bundled browser. |
The puppeteer-core package does not download Chrome. If you use it, provide a browser yourself by setting executablePath or, where applicable, selecting a standard installation with channel. The installation guide explains the package distinction.

Set an explicit executable path
Use this when your application or container installs Chrome separately and you know its exact executable path:
const puppeteer = require('puppeteer');
(async () => {
const browser = await puppeteer.launch({
executablePath: '/path/to/Chrome',
});
try {
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.goto('https://example.com');
console.log(await page.title());
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
})();
Replace the placeholder with the real executable path for the environment where this code runs. A path that works on a developer’s computer may not exist in a container, CI worker, or production host. For an explicit executable, Puppeteer recommends also setting the browser property as described in its LaunchOptions API.

PUPPETEER_EXECUTABLE_PATHoverrides the automatically computed executable path.PUPPETEER_CACHE_DIRchanges the browser cache directory.
For example, set them in the environment that launches Node.js, substituting real paths for your system:
PUPPETEER_EXECUTABLE_PATH=/path/to/Chrome
PUPPETEER_CACHE_DIR=/path/to/puppeteer-cache
node app.js
These settings are documented in Puppeteer’s configuration API. Configuration behavior may change between Puppeteer versions, so check the documentation for the version installed in your project.

Find a system Chrome in a known location
If you want Puppeteer’s browser-management tools to look up a known system-wide Chrome installation, the @puppeteer/browsers API provides computeSystemExecutablePath. It checks known locations for the requested release channel and throws an error if the expected browser is not found. This is a lookup for supported, known installation locations—not a guarantee that every custom installation can be discovered. See the browser-management API.
The browser-management guide also documents installing Chrome for Testing by channel or version and listing cached installations. Those options are useful when you want to manage browser versions explicitly rather than depend on a machine-wide Chrome install: @puppeteer/browsers documentation.
Troubleshoot launch failures
Chrome cannot be found
- Likely cause: Puppeteer’s browser download did not run or its cache is not where the process expects it.
- Fix: Confirm whether you use
puppeteerorpuppeteer-core. For a managed installation, runnpx puppeteer browsers installand check the cache location, including anyPUPPETEER_CACHE_DIRsetting. Forpuppeteer-core, install or otherwise manage a browser yourself and configure its path or channel.
The executable path is set, but launch still fails
- Likely cause: The path points to a missing file, a different environment, or a browser that is not compatible with the Puppeteer version.
- Fix: Verify that the executable exists in the environment running Node.js. If possible, use Puppeteer’s bundled browser, which is the configuration covered by its compatibility guarantee.
Chrome starts and exits immediately in a container
- Likely cause: Chrome cannot write to its profile, configuration, or cache locations.
- Fix: Check directory permissions and startup output. The Puppeteer troubleshooting guide identifies
chrome_crashpad_handler: --database is requiredas one possible symptom of startup failure in read-only environments. See Puppeteer troubleshooting.
A system Chrome lookup reports that it cannot find the browser
- Likely cause: The requested release channel is not installed in a location recognized by the lookup API.
- Fix: Install the expected channel or provide the actual executable path yourself.
computeSystemExecutablePaththrows when it cannot find the expected instance; see the browser-management API.

If your goal is simply to capture a website screenshot, ScreenshotNeo offers a screenshot API and MCP server rather than requiring you to locate and launch Chrome in your application. Its API accepts one GET request with a URL:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server includes screenshot, page-info, and PDF-capture tools for AI agents. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Is executablePath a Puppeteer method?
No. It is a launch option supplied to puppeteer.launch(), not a standalone method.
Can I use a Chrome executable from any version?
You can point Puppeteer at an external executable, but the official compatibility guarantee applies only to Puppeteer’s bundled browser. Check the installed Puppeteer version and test an externally managed browser in your target environment.
