To stop UI tests from being flaky, make each test verify a meaningful user-visible result from a known starting state, use locators and waits that match the page’s actual behavior, isolate data and dependencies, and preserve enough evidence to diagnose failures. Playwright’s auto-waiting and retrying assertions help, but they cannot make a test reliable if its expected outcome, setup, or environment is unsound.

What makes a UI automation test stable?

A stable test produces the same meaningful result when the application has not changed. That requires more than adding retries or increasing timeouts: the test must have a clear contract, independent setup, controlled dependencies, and an execution environment that does not introduce avoidable variability.

An empirical study by Alan Romano, Zihe Song, Sampath Grandhi, Wei Yang, and Weihang Wang analyzed 235 flaky UI test samples across 62 web and Android projects. The authors grouped observed causes into asynchronous waits, environment issues, test-runner API issues, and test-script logic issues. Those are categories found in that study sample, not a measure of how common flakiness is across all test suites.

Start with a user-visible outcome

Choose a behavior that matters to a user, then define what should be visible or possible when the test finishes. For example, after submitting a form, assert that a confirmation appears or that the expected page state is reached. An assertion should describe the feature’s contract—not an incidental class name, internal variable, or implementation detail that can change without changing user behavior.

In Playwright, a test combines actions and expectations. Web-first assertions retry while waiting for the expected state, which is more robust than checking once immediately after an action.

import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';

test('customer can submit a support request', async ({ page }) => {
  await page.goto('/support');
  await page.getByRole('textbox', { name: 'Email' }).fill('qa@example.test');
  await page.getByRole('textbox', { name: 'Message' }).fill('I need help with my order.');
  await page.getByRole('button', { name: 'Send request' }).click();

  await expect(page.getByRole('status')).toHaveText('Your request has been sent.');
});

The example assumes the application exposes an accessible status message with that text after a successful submission. Adapt the expected result to the actual user-facing behavior under test; do not assert a result the product does not promise.

Give every test independent state

A test should not depend on another test having run first, leaving behind a record, or restoring shared state correctly. Playwright’s built-in page fixture uses a browser context equivalent to a fresh browser profile, isolating pages between tests. Selenium’s project guidance likewise recommends test independence, avoiding shared state, and a fresh browser per test, while noting that no single practice fits every environment.

  • Establish the required application state in setup or fixtures for each test.
  • Create unique records or identifiers so concurrent tests cannot overwrite one another.
  • Clean up records when practical, but ensure cleanup failure does not silently corrupt later tests.
  • Make the test runnable alone and in a different order from the rest of the suite.

For a test that requires a known user, for example, create or reset that user in setup rather than relying on a registration test to run earlier. Keep the setup details available when debugging so the failure can be reproduced.

Choose locators that survive ordinary refactoring

Prefer locators that reflect how a person or assistive technology identifies a control: a role with an accessible name for a button, link, heading, or other control; an associated label for a field; and visible text when that text itself is part of the behavior. Playwright describes role locators as close to how users and assistive technology perceive a page. They are not a substitute for accessibility audits.

  • Use an explicit test ID when the team wants a deliberate test-facing contract independent of copy or role changes.
  • Scope a locator when several controls share the same name, such as selecting a button inside a named dialog.
  • Avoid long CSS or XPath chains tied to a particular DOM nesting structure; routine layout refactoring can break them.
  • Do not use a test ID merely to avoid choosing a meaningful user-facing locator where one is available.

For example, if two dialogs each contain a “Save” button, first locate the dialog by its accessible name, then find the button within that dialog. This documents the intended relationship and avoids selecting an arbitrary match.

Wait for readiness and the result—not an estimated duration

A fixed delay such as waitForTimeout(2000) guesses how long the application will take. It can still be too short on a busy CI machine and unnecessarily slow when the page is ready sooner. Synchronize on the action’s readiness and the outcome that matters instead.

For Playwright clicks, the locator must resolve to exactly one element, and the element must be visible, stable, able to receive events, and enabled. These actionability checks are useful signals: if a click cannot proceed because an overlay blocks the control or the control is disabled, that may expose a real application condition the test should address. Avoid forcing a click simply to get past a failure.

After the interaction, use a retrying assertion such as await expect(locator).toBeVisible() or await expect(locator).toHaveText(...). If it times out, treat that as evidence that the expected condition did not arrive within the configured window; investigate the app state, locator, dependencies, and test assumptions rather than automatically lengthening the timeout.

Control data, services, and the visual-test environment

Tests become easier to interpret when the feature under test is not competing with unrelated service changes or environmental drift. Keep test database state controlled, use an appropriately stable staging environment when applicable, and mock a third-party response when that provider is not what the test is meant to verify. If the third-party integration itself is under test, a mock alone cannot establish that the real integration works; keep a suitable integration check separate.

For visual regression checks, keep the operating system and browser versions consistent. A screenshot comparison can change because of rendering-environment differences as well as application changes, so record and control the environment used to produce expected and actual images.

Enable parallel execution only after isolation works

Parallel workers can shorten suite duration, but separate browser processes do not protect shared application records from collisions. First make tests pass independently; then add concurrency and watch for shared-data conflicts and CI resource constraints.

Playwright supports limiting worker processes and documents worker-specific test-data setup, including using a worker index to distinguish records. Use worker-specific data where tests create or mutate shared backend entities, and keep the worker count appropriate to the available CI resources. If failures emerge only under parallel execution, check data collisions and resource pressure before blaming the locator or adding retries.

Keep failure evidence and use retries carefully

Configure CI to preserve useful reports and traces. Playwright’s trace viewer presents a test timeline with DOM snapshots for actions, network requests, and other debugging detail. Logs, relevant network information, test data identifiers, browser and operating-system versions, and setup details can make an intermittent failure reproducible instead of mysterious.

  1. Run the failing test alone to see whether suite interaction is involved.
  2. Vary execution order or worker count to look for shared-state or concurrency problems.
  3. Compare browser and environment versions when the failure appears environment-specific.
  4. Inspect the first failed assertion, relevant DOM snapshot, network activity, and service response.
  5. Change one condition at a time, then rerun the test and the affected suite.

A retry that passes shows that the result is intermittent; it does not show that the underlying defect is harmless. Retries can help reveal a pattern, but they are not a diagnosis or a replacement for fixing the cause.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a fresh browser context also isolate backend data?

No. A fresh context isolates browser-profile state such as cookies and storage; application records and other backend state still need independent setup and isolation.

Should every third-party service be mocked?

No. Mock a dependency when it is outside the behavior the test is verifying. Keep checks that need to validate a real integration separate from tests that isolate your application behavior.

What should I do if a test only fails in CI?

Compare the execution environment and browser versions, then inspect the first failure alongside traces, network details, data setup, and concurrency. Change one condition at a time to isolate the cause.
