Advanced cross-browser testing means running the same important user journeys against a deliberately chosen set of browsers, versions, operating systems, and device profiles—not every imaginable combination. Start with the browsers and devices your product supports, prioritize by user impact and technical risk, then use reusable Playwright projects, focused visual checks, and verified hosted environments to cover the gaps.
Build a risk-based browser matrix
Begin with your product’s documented support policy and the environments your customers actually need. Treat browser engine, branded browser, operating system, device class, viewport, and version policy as separate dimensions. Testing every combination would multiply the matrix quickly, so choose configurations that represent distinct engines or meaningful user risk instead.
Choose configurations with a reason
- Include the browser families and device classes your product claims to support.
- Prioritize combinations used for high-impact workflows or capabilities with platform-sensitive behavior.
- Decide how versions are handled: for example, whether CI follows current supported releases or tests a pinned version for repeatability.
- Record why each configuration is included, so the matrix can change when support commitments or risks change.
This is a planning approach, not a matrix mandated by Playwright. The right selection depends on your supported audience and application.
Reuse one test suite across Playwright projects
Playwright projects let you run a suite under different configurations. The official documentation describes a project as “logical group of tests running with the same configuration.” Projects can represent browsers, device profiles, environments such as staging and production, or settings such as logged-in and logged-out states. See Playwright test projects.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Playwright documents Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit, as well as branded browsers and emulated device profiles. The framework’s available choices are not a reason to test all of them; select those that match your matrix. See Playwright browsers.
Example configuration
This configuration shares the same tests across three browser engines. Add only projects needed by your support policy; a device profile can be added as another project when mobile emulation is relevant.

Install the matching Playwright browser binaries with npx playwright install, then run the suite with npx playwright test. To run only one project, use npx playwright test --project=firefox. Consult the official Playwright getting started guide for setup and language-specific details.
Keep shared workflows shared
Use common tests where behavior should be equivalent, and add platform-specific assertions only when the product truly differs. Useful application journeys to include may be navigation, authentication, forms, payments, and any browser-dependent capability your product relies on. These are examples for your own coverage plan, not a prescribed checklist from Playwright.
Choose what to verify visually
Visual regression is most useful for stable, high-value pages or components where a visible change matters. Avoid treating every page as a screenshot baseline: volatile content can create noisy diffs that obscure meaningful defects.
Keep the operating system and browser versions consistent between baseline and comparison runs. Playwright’s best-practices guidance specifically recommends the same OS and browser versions for visual comparisons. Differences in fonts, rendering stacks, or browser versions can produce screenshot changes unrelated to your code. See Playwright best practices.
Make a visual failure diagnosable
- Use a consistent browser, OS, viewport, and device scale factor for baseline updates and comparisons.
- Choose stable pages or components and control dynamic content where practical.
- Store the actual screenshot, expected baseline, and diff with the test result so reviewers can see what changed.
- Review baseline changes deliberately; do not update snapshots automatically just to make a failing run green.
Maintain and record the test environment
Keep Playwright and its browser binaries updated as part of routine maintenance. A test result should identify the browser and version, operating system, viewport or device profile, and relevant artifacts. This context helps distinguish a product regression from a browser or environment change.

Playwright notes that its Chromium project may run ahead of branded Chrome and Edge releases, and that some browser features vary by operating system. Therefore, a passing Chromium run alone does not establish that a particular branded browser and OS combination works. See Playwright’s browser guidance.
Use hosted testing when local coverage is not enough
A hosted browser service can extend coverage when your team cannot conveniently maintain a required browser and OS combination locally. Evaluate candidates against the environments actually needed, whether you can identify the selected browser and platform, how runs fit your CI and parallel capacity, and what failure artifacts are available. The documentation consulted here does not establish comparative execution benchmarks or current pricing, so assess those against your own workload.
BrowserStack documents supported Playwright browser and OS combinations. Its documentation also warns that a mobile capability can fall back to regular mobile Chrome; for device-sensitive testing, confirm that the requested platform was selected rather than assuming the configuration guarantees it. See BrowserStack Playwright documentation.
Percy offers a visual testing and review path with configured cross-browser projects. It is one option for teams that want a hosted visual review workflow; confirm that its supported configuration meets your matrix. See Percy overview.
Keep standards testing separate from product acceptance
Web Platform Tests is a cross-browser suite focused on web platform interoperability. It can provide context for standards behavior and implementation differences. It does not replace application-specific end-to-end tests: passing a standards test does not establish that your sign-in, checkout, or other product workflow works.

Troubleshoot common coverage failures
A browser project fails to launch
Check that the Playwright package and its browser binaries are installed and compatible. Run npx playwright install after updating Playwright, then rerun the named project.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
A test passes in Chromium but fails elsewhere
Use the failure artifacts to identify the project and environment, then reproduce it in that browser. Check for differences in browser behavior, assumptions about timing, and platform-dependent features; do not treat Chromium success as proof for Firefox, WebKit, or a branded browser.
Visual snapshots differ without an apparent UI change
Compare the baseline and current OS, browser version, viewport, and device scale factor. If these differ, first rerun in the baseline environment; otherwise, a rendering-environment change may be mistaken for an application regression.
A hosted mobile run uses the wrong platform
Inspect the service’s run metadata and verify the actual browser and device selection. BrowserStack documents a fallback to regular mobile Chrome for a mobile capability, so adjust the requested configuration or use a validated environment for requirements that depend on a specific device.
The matrix becomes too slow or noisy
Return to the risk rationale for each project. Keep broad shared workflow coverage on the most consequential configurations, and reserve extra projects for specific platform-sensitive risks. The sources cited here do not establish a universally optimal run count or comparative speed benchmark.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Playwright run tests in Safari?
Playwright documents WebKit rather than a branded Safari browser. A WebKit project should not be treated as proof that every Safari and operating-system combination is covered.
