To intercept HTTP requests in Puppeteer, enable interception with await page.setRequestInterception(true), listen for the page’s request event, and resolve each request with continue(), abort(), or respond(). Do this before navigation, and make sure each request is resolved only once.
Basic request interception
This runnable example blocks PNG and JPG URLs and lets other requests proceed. The suffix check is only a simple example; production filters should match the URL or request properties that matter to your use case.
import puppeteer from 'puppeteer';
const browser = await puppeteer.launch();
try {
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.setRequestInterception(true);
page.on('request', request => {
if (request.isInterceptResolutionHandled()) return;
if (request.url().endsWith('.png') || request.url().endsWith('.jpg')) {
request.abort();
} else {
request.continue();
}
});
await page.goto('https://example.com');
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
Interception must be enabled before navigation so the requests you want to handle have not already been sent. Puppeteer’s documentation warns: “Once request interception is enabled, every request will stall unless it’s continued, responded or aborted; or completed using the browser cache.”
Choose how to resolve each request
Forward it with continue()
Call request.continue() for an unchanged request. It also accepts overrides for supported request properties, such as headers; consult the current continue API reference for the complete override shape.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Block it with abort()
Call request.abort() to cancel a request, for example when a URL or resource type matches a blocking rule.
Mock it with respond()
Call request.respond() to fulfill a request with a response you supply. This is useful for controlled tests that should not depend on a live endpoint. It requires interception to be enabled.

Block requests by resource type or URL
Use the request object’s properties to make the filter match what you actually intend to block. For example, a resource-type rule avoids relying on file extensions, which may be absent from URLs:
await page.setRequestInterception(true);
page.on('request', request => {
if (request.isInterceptResolutionHandled()) return;
if (request.resourceType() === 'image') {
request.abort();
} else {
request.continue();
}
});
For domain-based rules, inspect request.url() and match the intended host and path rather than using a broad substring that could also match unrelated URLs.

Mock a response
A handler can respond locally instead of forwarding a matching request. Keep the response explicit so a test has predictable status, headers, and content:
await page.setRequestInterception(true);
page.on('request', request => {
if (request.isInterceptResolutionHandled()) return;
if (request.url().endsWith('/api/status')) {
request.respond({
status: 200,
contentType: 'application/json',
body: JSON.stringify({ ok: true })
});
} else {
request.continue();
}
});
Safely handle asynchronous checks and multiple listeners
Another listener, including one installed by a package, may resolve a request first. Check request.isInterceptResolutionHandled() before resolving it. If your handler awaits an asynchronous lookup, check again after the await and immediately before calling abort(), continue(), or respond(). Keep the final check and resolution together without another await between them.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
page.on('request', async request => {
if (request.isInterceptResolutionHandled()) return;
const shouldBlock = await checkPolicy(request.url());
// Another listener may have handled it while checkPolicy was running.
if (request.isInterceptResolutionHandled()) return;
if (shouldBlock) {
request.abort();
} else {
request.continue();
}
});
This guard prevents duplicate-resolution errors; it does not guarantee a particular result when multiple listeners are competing. If you control the listeners, coordinate their behavior rather than assuming yours is the only handler.
Cooperative priorities
Puppeteer supports Cooperative Intercept Mode: handlers can provide numeric priorities with their abort(), continue(), or respond() calls. The highest priority resolution wins. For a tie, abort outranks respond, and respond outranks continue. Every handler must use a numeric priority for cooperative arbitration to work; a single resolution without one triggers legacy immediate resolution. Continue checking whether a request was handled, particularly when third-party listeners may use legacy behavior. The official guide recommends the default priority, zero, unless a handler has a reason to claim a different one.

Priorities add little when there is only one handler. For a single listener, focus on resolving each request exactly once.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Distinguish HTTP errors from failed requests
Puppeteer provides request, response, requestfinished, and requestfailed events. A server response with status 404 or 503 is still an HTTP response; the status alone does not make it a requestfailed event. Treat HTTP error statuses and transport-level request failures as separate cases when logging or diagnosing page loads. See the official page events reference.
Troubleshooting
- Navigation or page loading appears stuck: A request may be left unresolved. Ensure every intercepted request is continued, aborted, responded to, or completed through the documented browser-cache path.
- A duplicate-resolution error appears: Another listener may already have acted. Check
isInterceptResolutionHandled(), including after any asynchronous work. - A request you meant to block still loads: Confirm interception was enabled before the request began and make the condition match the actual URL or request property, not just an assumed suffix.
- Your mock does not take effect: Confirm interception is enabled and that no earlier listener resolved the request. Use a fresh handled-state check immediately before
respond(). - A 404 is counted as a failed request: Check the response status separately. An HTTP error response is not automatically a
requestfailedevent.
Performance and reliability considerations
Interception adds a decision point to every request, so keep handlers focused and avoid unnecessary asynchronous work. A slow policy lookup holds that request pending; ensure it can complete and use a post-await handled-state check before resolving. Blocking resources can change page behavior, so verify that the page still has the scripts, styles, images, or API data needed for the task. For stable automation, use precise matching rules and distinguish HTTP responses from network failures in diagnostics.
Or skip the browser setup
If your goal is to capture a website rather than control its individual browser requests, ScreenshotNeo provides a one-request screenshot API. Cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are not billed. It also has an MCP server so AI agents can take screenshots.
