Otherwise, it calculates the expected executable path from the selected browser, its expected build, and Puppeteer’s browser cache directory, then checks that the file exists. If it cannot find the file, check the install step, cache configuration, and browser type before changing the launch code.
How Puppeteer resolves the executable path
- It checks for an explicit path. Puppeteer uses
executablePathfrom configuration or thePUPPETEER_EXECUTABLE_PATHenvironment variable. If path validation is enabled, a configured location that does not exist produces an error. - Otherwise, it calculates a cache path. Puppeteer uses the selected browser type, the expected browser version, and its configured cache directory to calculate where the executable should be.
- It verifies the expected file exists. A missing file usually means the browser was not installed in that environment, the cache directory differs between install and runtime, or the selected browser/build does not match what is in the cache.
The launcher’s implementation can change between releases; the behavior described here follows Puppeteer’s published API and documentation. Puppeteer configuration API and launcher API.
Where Puppeteer downloads the browser
The documented default cache directory is path.join(os.homedir(), '.cache', 'puppeteer'), commonly shown as $HOME/.cache/puppeteer. Puppeteer’s configuration guide says it has used a global browser cache beginning with v19.0.0. Set PUPPETEER_CACHE_DIR or configure cacheDirectory to use another location; environment variables override configuration-file values where applicable. See the configuration guide.
A global cache can cause deployment surprises: a project moved to a fresh machine or packaged into a container does not automatically bring along a browser cached elsewhere. Ensure the browser is installed in the runtime environment and that runtime configuration points to the same cache location used during installation.

Install the browser Puppeteer expects
Using puppeteer
Installing the puppeteer package normally downloads a compatible Chrome for Testing. The installation guide states that starting with Puppeteer v21.6.0, installation also downloads chrome-headless-shell. Browser downloads depend on the package install lifecycle script being allowed to run. See the installation guide.
If your package manager blocks install scripts, install the browser explicitly after installing the package:
npx puppeteer browsers install
If you change browser-download settings, rerun the browser installation step so the cache reflects the new configuration.

Using puppeteer-core
puppeteer-core does not download Chrome. It is intended for setups where you manage the browser yourself, connect to a remote browser, or otherwise provide the browser separately. In that case, pass an explicit executablePath, or use channel when the browser is installed in a standard location. The Puppeteer project’s installation guide explains this distinction: Puppeteer installation.
Configure a path explicitly when you manage the browser
For a browser installed outside Puppeteer’s cache, point Puppeteer at the executable that exists in the process’s runtime environment:
const browser = await puppeteer.launch({ executablePath: '/absolute/path/to/chrome' });

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Replace the example path with the actual executable path for your operating system and deployment. Alternatively, use a standard browser channel if that matches your installation:
const browser = await puppeteer.launch({ channel: 'chrome' });

Browser selection and headless mode affect the expected file
Puppeteer’s selected browser determines which installed-browser type it looks for. Regular Chrome resolves to Chrome; Chrome launched with headless: 'shell' resolves to Chrome Headless Shell; Firefox resolves to Firefox. A cache containing a different browser type or build will not satisfy the path Puppeteer calculates. Check the requested browser and headless mode against the browser actually installed. See the launch API.
Diagnose “Could not find Chrome” or an executable path error
- Confirm the package. If the application uses
puppeteer-core, a browser download is not automatic. Install and manage a browser yourself, then pass its path or a supported channel. - Check whether installation scripts ran. If your package manager skipped lifecycle scripts, run
npx puppeteer browsers installin the environment that will run the program. - Compare install and runtime cache settings. Inspect both
cacheDirectoryandPUPPETEER_CACHE_DIR. An environment variable can override the configuration file, and a fresh container or host may not contain the install-time cache. - Look for an explicit override. Check
executablePathandPUPPETEER_EXECUTABLE_PATH. Remove a stale override or correct it to an existing executable; an explicit path prevents automatic cache lookup from being used. - Match browser type and mode. Verify that the selected browser and headless mode correspond to the browser binary installed in the cache.
- For an externally managed browser, verify the runtime path. Use an absolute path to the executable available to the process, or a standard-location channel supported by the setup.
Or skip the browser setup
