Programming skills are a foundation of sustainable test automation because automated tests are software: they need to be designed, checked, integrated into a delivery workflow, and maintained as the application changes. A recorder can help capture an interaction, but it cannot replace the judgment needed to build reliable checks and keep them useful.

Why programming matters in test automation

Test automation applies software-engineering practices to verifying software. The International Software Testing Qualifications Board (ISTQB) says a test automation engineer is expected to have “skills, experience, and expertise in software engineering.” Its current Certified Tester Advanced Level Test Automation Engineering (CTAL-TAE) v2.0 qualification covers much more than writing scripts: architecture, infrastructure, risks, maintainability, deployment, CI/CD integration, reporting, verification, and continuous improvement.

Programming is important because automation code becomes part of a project’s working system. Code that is difficult to understand, debug, or change can make a test suite costly to maintain and less trustworthy. ISTQB notes that programming and documentation practices can increase the maintainability, reliability, and security of a test automation solution.

What programming skills do automation engineers use?

Reading and changing code

Automation work often begins with understanding an existing application, test suite, or framework rather than writing a new script from scratch. You need to follow control flow, find where data comes from, make a small change safely, and recognize when an error originates in the test, environment, or application.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Core language concepts

Learn the language constructs used to express test setup, actions, decisions, and checks. Useful fundamentals include variables, conditions, loops, functions, collections, modules, exceptions, and basic debugging. The goal is not to memorize syntax in isolation; it is to use these concepts to make a test understandable and dependable.

Debugging and version control

A test that fails is a starting point for investigation, not proof that the product is broken. Learn to inspect errors, use a debugger, and trace the test’s setup and actions. Version control helps teams review test changes, understand why they were made, and coordinate updates alongside application changes.

Designing maintainable checks

A useful automated test has a clear setup, action, expected result, and cleanup. Assertions should express the behavior that matters, and failures should provide enough context to diagnose what happened. Separate repeated logic or test data when doing so improves clarity; avoid abstraction that makes a simple test harder to follow.

Programming is necessary, but not sufficient

Writing code does not by itself make someone an effective test automation engineer. Automation also requires testing judgment, knowledge of the system under test, appropriate tool and architecture choices, and the ability to verify the test solution and its environment. The CTAL-TAE syllabus treats automation as a lifecycle that includes planning and strategy, development, deployment, reporting, maintenance, and improvement—not merely script creation.

This distinction matters when choosing what to learn. A developer may already know a language well but still need practice designing meaningful tests. A tester may have strong test-design skills but need enough programming experience to create and maintain the automation their project requires.

  1. Choose a language that fits your context. Start with a general-purpose language used by the application team or in the automation work you want to pursue. Official ISTQB materials emphasize selecting technologies and standards for the project and strategy; they do not name one language as best for everyone.
  2. Practice language fundamentals. Use small exercises to learn variables, conditions, loops, functions, collections, modules, exceptions, and basic debugging. Aim to explain what your code does and why, not just make it run.
  3. Read and modify existing code. Make small, reviewable changes, trace errors, and use a debugger. Put your work under version control so changes can be inspected and tracked.
  4. Practice test design before adding tools. For each test, identify its setup, action, expected result, and cleanup. Decide what behavior matters and what evidence would demonstrate it.
  5. Use your project’s test framework and automation tool. Write checks with readable assertions, stable selectors or interfaces, useful failure messages, and controlled test state. Choose tools that fit the project rather than assuming one tool is right for all teams.
  6. Refactor repetition selectively. Extract helpers or fixtures when reuse makes tests clearer. Shared components also need thoughtful management and documentation; reuse alone is not a reason to create another abstraction.
  7. Practice the full lifecycle. Verify the environment, run tests through the project’s delivery workflow, investigate failures, report results, and revise tests as the system changes.

Choosing a language or automation tool

Beginners often frame the choice as a contest between tools—for example, whether to focus on Playwright or Selenium. The more useful first question is what your target project and team need. The official materials do not establish a universal winner among programming languages or automation tools.

  • Project fit: Does the language and framework work with the application and the interfaces you need to test?
  • Team fit: Can the people who will review, debug, and maintain the tests work effectively in that language?
  • Maintainability: Does the approach support clear, modular, documented automation without making ordinary changes expensive?
  • Reliability and security: Can the team build dependable checks while avoiding unnecessary security risks?
  • Lifecycle fit: Can the environment be verified, results reported, and tests integrated into CI/CD and deployment?

These are decision factors, not a published scoring formula. Compare tools in the context of real project requirements rather than choosing solely by popularity or the number of features listed.

Recording a test versus engineering reusable automation

Recording can be useful for demonstrating or capturing a simple interaction. It does not remove the need to understand what the test is checking, whether the result is meaningful, and how the test should respond to changes in the application.

ISTQB’s 2016 syllabus described structured scripting as requiring programming and explained that reusable script libraries need management and documentation. That is a historical explanation of scripting patterns, not a claim that every current recorder or automation tool has identical limits. The broader lesson is that reusable automation still needs engineering: shared behavior must remain understandable, verifiable, and maintainable.

How ISTQB fits into a learning plan

CTAL-TAE v2.0 is an advanced-level qualification, not a substitute for building practical programming experience. ISTQB identifies self-study using its syllabus and recommended reading, as well as accredited classroom, virtual, and e-learning training. It also announced CTAL-TAE v2.0 and the complementary Test Automation Strategy (CT-TAS) v1.0 on 12 June 2024; ISTQB says neither qualification is a prerequisite for the other.

The current CTAL-TAE page lists an exam of 40 questions, 66 total points, a passing score of 43, and 90 minutes. It states that candidates need a Certified Tester Foundation Level v4.0 or earlier Foundation Level certificate and sufficient practical experience. Candidates should confirm the practical-experience criteria with an ISTQB member board or exam provider, and check current exam requirements before booking because certification rules can change.

ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents and MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
