In Puppeteer 25.12.0, pass an optional BrowserContextOptions object to browser.createBrowserContext(). The interface documents three options: downloadBehavior, proxyServer, and proxyBypassList. A new context also gives pages a separate storage boundary, including cookies and local storage.
Where BrowserContext options go
Create a context through the browser instance, passing the options object as the method’s optional argument. The call returns a promise that resolves to a BrowserContext. Create pages from that context with context.newPage().

All three properties are optional. The reference explicitly describes the default behavior only for an omitted downloadBehavior; it does not establish a particular default proxy configuration.

How contexts isolate browser state
A BrowserContext is an individual user context with isolated storage, including cookies and localStorage. Puppeteer’s API documentation also states that a created context does not share cookies or cache with other browser contexts. This makes separate contexts useful for independent sessions without having to launch a separate browser for each one.
- A page created with
context.newPage()belongs to that context. - A popup opened by a page, such as through
window.open, belongs to the parent page’s context. - In Chrome, non-default contexts are incognito. The default context may also be incognito if Chrome was launched with
--incognito.
Close the context when its work is done
Call await context.close() to close a non-default context and all pages associated with it. The default browser context cannot be closed. Puppeteer marks the BrowserContext constructor as internal, so create contexts with browser.createBrowserContext() rather than constructing one directly.

Choose options by the task
- Use
downloadBehaviorwhen a context needs a specific download policy; confirm supported values in the API reference for your installed version. - Use
proxyServerwhen requests from the context should use a proxy endpoint. - Add
proxyBypassListwhen selected hosts should avoid that proxy. - Use a separate context when you need an independent storage session, regardless of whether you need proxy or download configuration.
The official API references cited here do not publish comparative performance or security benchmarks for these options.
Troubleshooting
Option appears to have no effect
Confirm that the object is passed to browser.createBrowserContext(options), not to puppeteer.launch() or page.goto(). Check the reference matching your installed Puppeteer version for supported names and types.

Requests do not use the expected proxy
Check the proxyServer endpoint and optional port, then review proxyBypassList for hosts intentionally excluded from proxying. The interface reference describes the configuration fields but does not guarantee behavior for a particular proxy provider.
Proxy authentication fails
The Puppeteer interface reference points to Page.authenticate for setting a username and password. Confirm your authentication flow against the current Puppeteer guidance and the target browser version.

Download behavior differs from expectations
An omitted downloadBehavior uses the default behavior. If you need a specific policy, consult the current DownloadBehavior type and set a supported value explicitly; the options interface alone does not list those values.
Cookies or cache are not shared
That separation is expected between contexts. Create and reuse pages within the same context when they need its storage, and create a different context for an independent session.

Closing the context fails
The default context cannot be closed. Close a context created with browser.createBrowserContext(); that call also closes the context’s associated pages.
