To measure which buttons, links, forms, and other interactive elements Cypress tests exercise, use Cypress UI Coverage. It reports on UI interactions using Test Replay data in Cypress Cloud; it does not require source-code instrumentation, a coverage plugin, or test changes to get started. If by “coverage” you mean which source-code statements, branches, and functions ran, use the separate Istanbul-based code-coverage workflow instead.
First, clarify what “element coverage” means
Cypress documentation distinguishes UI Coverage from traditional source-code coverage. They answer different questions and produce different kinds of evidence.
| Measure | What it counts | Setup and result |
|---|---|---|
| UI Coverage | Interactive UI elements tests interacted with, such as buttons, links, forms, and pages. | Uses Test Replay data in Cypress Cloud. No application instrumentation or coverage plugin is needed to get started. Cypress describes UI Coverage. |
| Source-code coverage | Application statements or lines, branches, and functions that executed. | Instrument the application, collect browser coverage with @cypress/code-coverage, and generate reports such as static HTML reports. |
An Istanbul percentage does not tell you which DOM controls tests exercised. Conversely, UI Coverage does not replace source-level reports when you need execution data for code.
Measure interactive element coverage with Cypress UI Coverage
For the literal question “How do I measure element coverage in Cypress?”, start with UI Coverage. Its documented setup is based on Test Replay data in Cypress Cloud, rather than Istanbul instrumentation. Follow the official setup guide for the current account and project steps.

Refine what the report includes
Once the basic report is available, configuration can help exclude third-party or irrelevant interface elements, organize views, and define which interactions count. Use the UI Coverage configuration guide for those filters and interaction rules. This is useful when an unfiltered report includes UI outside your application’s intended test scope.
Interpret the report as a way to find controls or flows that tests have not exercised, not as a standalone quality score. For example, an uncovered checkout control may point to a missing test path; the percentage alone does not establish whether existing assertions would catch a defect.

- Ergonomically Designed: Work in tight areas with a compact design that gets into tough spots
- Compact and Lightweight: Both tools are designed to fit into difficult to reach spaces. The 1/4" impact driver has a length of 5.55 in. and weighs just 2.8 lbs, while the 1/2" drill/driver measures only 7.5 in. and weighs 3.6 lbs
- Both the DEWALT impact driver and electric drill driver feature integrated LED work lights with a convenient 20-second delay, ensuring enhanced visibility in dimly lit or challenging work areas
- One-Handed Loading - Keep one hand free with a 1/4 in. hex chuck that accepts 1 in. bit tips
- Power drill cordless with 1/2" single sleeve ratcheting chuck provides tight bit gripping strength, making bit changes faster and more secure
Measure source-code coverage with Istanbul
If the goal is to see executed application statements, branches, and functions, instrument the app before Cypress runs it in the browser. Cypress does not instrument application code itself, and @cypress/code-coverage collects and reports coverage rather than performing the instrumentation. The Cypress code-coverage guide documents Babel/Istanbul and Vite setup options.
- Instrument the application build. In a Babel pipeline, the guide demonstrates
babel-plugin-istanbul; for Vite, it demonstratesvite-plugin-istanbul. Scope instrumentation to application source, exclude generated or irrelevant files, and preserve source maps where the build supports them. The Vite configuration can filter included and excluded paths and file extensions, and can be enabled conditionally for CI. - Install and configure the collector. Add
@cypress/code-coverageas a development dependency. Import@cypress/code-coverage/supportfrom the E2E support file and register the plugin task insetupNodeEventsin the Cypress configuration, returning the configuration object as shown in the official guide. - Run Cypress against the instrumented app. The browser should expose coverage data at
window.__coverage__. The collector merges data from test runs and uses nyc to create reports. The maintained cypress-io/code-coverage repository describes output in.nyc_outputandcoverage/lcov-report. - Open the generated report. Use the static HTML output to inspect uncovered files and lines, then examine missed branches and critical flows rather than treating a single aggregate percentage as a quality guarantee.

const { defineConfig } = require('cypress');
const coverage = require('@cypress/code-coverage/task');
module.exports = defineConfig({
e2e: {
setupNodeEvents(on, config) {
coverage(on, config);
return config;
},
},
});
In the E2E support file, add:
import '@cypress/code-coverage/support';
These collector additions do not instrument the app. The application build must already be instrumented for browser coverage to appear.
Include component tests and backend code when needed
Component testing
Component runs need the support import in the component support file too; an E2E-only import will not collect component coverage. Register the task in the relevant Cypress configuration. With Vite, configure the Vite Istanbul plugin for the component dev server; with Webpack, configure Babel/Istanbul in the component testing dev server. See the Cypress guide for the framework-specific wiring.

Backend coverage
Backend code needs separate instrumentation and exposure of its coverage object, for example through middleware or an endpoint. The Cypress collector can merge that data when configured with env.codeCoverage.url. Keep any endpoint that exposes coverage data limited to an appropriate local or test environment.
Keep source coverage scoped to the app
- Set include and exclude patterns so reports cover application source rather than dependencies or generated output. The documented nyc and Babel paths do not instrument
node_modules. - If Jest or another runner also instruments code, keep the Cypress instrumentation configuration separate where needed; Cypress documentation demonstrates a separate Babel environment to avoid duplicate Istanbul plugin configuration.
- Use uncovered critical branches and user flows to decide where further tests add value. No universal coverage percentage establishes that a test suite is adequate.
Troubleshoot missing or misleading coverage
- No source coverage appears: verify the app served to Cypress was built with instrumentation. Installing the collector alone is insufficient.
- The browser has no coverage object: inspect the application-under-test frame for
window.__coverage__. If it is absent, check that the instrumented build is the one Cypress actually loaded. - The collector does not run: confirm both the support import and Node task registration are present in the configuration used for that test run.
- Component results are missing: add the support import to the component support file and instrument the component dev-server pipeline, not only the E2E server.
- Reports include irrelevant files or miss app files: review instrumentation include/exclude globs and extensions; ensure they match application source.
- Coverage seems duplicated across test runners: check whether Jest or another runner applies Istanbul too, and separate the Cypress Babel environment as appropriate.
- You need interaction coverage, not executed lines: use UI Coverage. Instrumentation and Istanbul reports answer the source-code question, not which interface elements users’ tests touched.
