Good communication with a frontend developer starts with a shared written record: explain the user goal and expected behavior, link the current design, specify what changes across screen sizes, and make accessibility needs and decisions visible in the related issue or project thread. Involve the developer while the design is still taking shape—not only when it is ready to build.
Start with the outcome, not just the mockup
A design file shows appearance, but implementation also depends on what users should be able to do and what the interface should do in response. Open the handoff with the user or product goal, then describe the expected result in plain language. For example: “A visitor should be able to compare the plans, choose one, and continue to checkout.” That context helps the developer assess behavior and ask useful questions before coding.
GitLab’s design-change guidance recommends sharing design specifications in the related issue, preferably by linking a Figma file or using GitLab Designs. Treat the issue or project record as the durable entry point: someone arriving later should be able to find the current design and understand what is being built without reconstructing the conversation.
Prepare a useful design handoff
Link the current source and identify what is ready
Put the design link in the relevant work item and identify which version or screen is ready for implementation. If some areas are still exploratory, label them as such. Note any linked assets, component references, or content that the developer needs, and keep the source of truth clear when the design changes.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Describe behavior and states
Call out interactions that are not obvious from a static screen. Explain relevant states, content, and expected actions, such as what happens when a menu opens, a form has an error, or a control is disabled. Distinguish required behavior from visual details that can be adjusted in implementation.
Specify responsive behavior
Describe what should happen as the viewport narrows. Say which elements resize, collapse, move, or wrap, and which information and actions must remain available. Avoid relying on a single desktop screenshot to communicate a layout intended to work at multiple widths.
Include accessibility considerations
Raise accessibility needs during design and implementation, rather than leaving them to the final review. Note relevant component or design-system guidance and identify interaction or content requirements the developer should account for. GitLab’s documentation points contributors to accessibility practices and states that GitLab’s own work conforms to WCAG 2.1 level AA; that is GitLab’s stated target, not a universal standard for every project. Agree the applicable target for your product or organization.

Invite technical questions early
Ask the developer to flag constraints or ambiguities while the design can still be shaped. GitLab’s collaboration playbook emphasizes a common language and reducing a longer-term vision to workable scope. That makes the handoff a collaboration, not a one-way delivery of a finished specification.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesKeep communication useful during implementation
Use asynchronous updates for non-urgent work
Keep requirements, status updates, design proposals, decisions, and questions that do not need an immediate answer in the related issue or project thread. GitLab recommends asynchronous communication for this kind of work. Write in short, direct, scannable chunks; Google’s Material communication guidance likewise recommends concise writing and simple, direct language.
Choose a live conversation when it resolves ambiguity faster
Use a direct conversation when people need immediate clarification or a complex tradeoff is difficult to resolve in writing. Discuss the shared constraints: user need, design intent, technical complexity, accessibility, and delivery scope. Agree which behavior is essential and what can change. Afterward, record the decision and any remaining actions in the shared work item so the outcome is available to people who were not in the conversation.

Make changes and open questions explicit
When the design changes, link or identify the updated source and say what changed. If a decision is pending, state the question, who needs to weigh in, and whether implementation can proceed on other parts of the work. This prevents an unanswered thread or an old mockup from quietly becoming the assumed requirement.
Review the implementation against the agreement
Review behavior as well as visual appearance. Check the agreed interactions at relevant viewport sizes, confirm that information and actions remain available as intended, and include the accessibility checks identified for the project.
When reporting a mismatch, give a reproducible example: the page or component, the viewport or state, what you expected, and what happened instead. A concrete report gives the developer something actionable to investigate without turning a difference in preference into an unclear defect.

A practical handoff checklist
- Goal: What user or product outcome should this work deliver?
- Source: Is the current design linked from the related issue, and is the implementation-ready version clear?
- Behavior: Are important states, content, and actions described?
- Responsive layout: What changes at narrower widths, and what must remain available?
- Accessibility: Are applicable requirements and component guidance identified?
- Collaboration: Have technical questions been invited early, and are decisions recorded where the team can find them?
- Review: Can a reported mismatch be reproduced from the page, viewport, state, expected result, and actual result?
GitLab’s guidance consists of recommendations and role expectations, not a measured promise that any particular handoff process will improve speed or reduce rework by a given amount. Adapt the record and review steps to the tools and requirements your team actually uses.

Frequently Asked Questions
Should every clarification happen in a meeting?
No. Keep non-urgent requirements, questions, and decisions in the shared project record; use a live conversation when immediate back-and-forth is genuinely useful.
Is a screenshot enough to hand off a design?
No. A screenshot can show a visual reference, but the handoff should also describe expected behavior, responsive changes, and applicable accessibility needs.
